    Hi Everyone!

I know this is for 2020, but I was wondering if anyone had any insights on whether to choose Ryerson Master of public policy and administration program or queen's master of public administration program. I am really interested in doing an internship.  Anything would be helpful! Thank you!

If you are interested in work experience, go to Carleton. Well, for federal government experience at least.

Hi, I'm an undergrad wondering how funding works for these grad schools usually - is it random based on the strength of your personal statement? You can get some funding or none at all?

May I also ask what is a good enough average to get into these schools especially programs like NPSIA? Is it normally based on a 4 point gpa scale? Are B gpa's ever accepted? Do schools really focus on last 2 years of school or 10 credits or cumulative more in your experience? Thank you!

Read the program website, all of your questions answers are on there.

    Hi

I am trying to decide between Carleton MPPA and U of Ottawa GSPIA for this Fall. Both programs have the opportunity for two coop work terms, and I have received funding from both Schools. Both are placed in Ottawa so I'm guessing both work terms might lead to more government/ federal job opportunities. Although I think U of Ottawa is ranked higher internationally, Carleton's public affairs program seems to be older and more well known. Only thing is that Ottawa has a mandatory course in French, and although I have studied French before, it is a very basic level.  I'm not sure how to go about this decision. You guys have any recommendations or insights ?

    Thanks!!

Carleton is simply better than UOttawa for Public Policy and Administration. They have better funding, faculty, coop placement rates, thesis/major research project options, etc. What are you comparing them on?

  4. To the above two posters, Carleton's MPPA has a better reputation and coop placements than UOttawa (MPPA has above a 90% placement rate). However, if you are interested in International Affairs, you will not get that education in Carleton's MPPA, you should have applied to NPSIA. Well, you could take NPSIA electives I guess.

Can you achieve your goal of working for GAC or an NGO? Of course, I am in the MPPA program and we have access to plenty of GAC coop jobs. If your goal is work in the federal government you should do the MPPA. If you goal is anything else, do not do the MPPA.

Feel free to message me, also, your posts are better served in the government affairs forum page, not social sciences.

    Bump.

Canadian starting my 1 year MSc in the fall. Haven't had much luck with the University, my college, or 3rd parties. Not sure what I can do at this point though. Any help would be appreciated, especially in light of this pandemic.

What are your stats like? Funding is largely GPA based.

  6. 1. I finished the semester with three A's and an A-. the program I'm in curves grades to a B+ and most profs do not give out A+'s so these grades are a big accomplishment for me.

    2. Reached out to journal in my field to write a book review for them, they said yes.

    3. Just submitted my thesis proposal

  7. Didn't get the award, was ranked 4/9 and top 3 got the award in my committee (8B). Tough lose.

    Compétences (70) : 58,55
    Intentions de recherche (30) : 22,00
    Total : 80,55 %

I was lucky enough to get SSHRC and OGS though. Still kinda sad about this one.

Have you done it through athabasca or know anyone who has? Its actually where i was thinking of doing it since the registration process seems simpler plus its self paced.

Ive already done micro and macro but on a pass/fail basis at u of t (it was over 4 years ago but i remebered not finding it difficult). so i was also thinking of just doing both at the sane time at athabasca.

I know multiple NPSIA and MPPA students that completed their econ pre-reqs through Athabasca

    Hey guys.

I need to complete an econ class to meet my offer for NSPIA. I almost completely forgot until getting a reminder email from Kailey to be honest (since this whole pandemic has started ive found it hard to even think about grad school and whether classes will be running normally... ).

Anyways, I've been debating where to do the econ course but i think i might try to sign up for carletons online course or somewhere else depending on the availability at this point.

Just concerned about timelines since i thought youre blocked from registering for courses until your offer changes to unconditional. Does anyone know when course registration starts this year for the fall term?

take  econ through Athabasca and call Tabatha to ask the other question.

They don't offer TA/RA initially because those positions aren't available until 2nd year anyways. I've been talking to a girl who's graduating from Munk this year and she said no one pays the full 19k/yr to go there, there are a lot of scholarships available which make tuition much more manageable.

Interesting, that isnt what they told me last year when I asked. Either way, as long as you can cover tuition you are good!

I am also in a similar mindset - with COVID-19 the situation is too unpredictable. I am thinking of trying to defer my acceptance to the following year if possible...

Also, did Munk offer you any funding? The only thing I was offered so far is 3K... I was hoping they'd offer more.

They do not offer more, not do they offer TA or RAships with their funding. 10/10

    Hi,

I thought I would start a thread for my Ontario peers who may be gunning for the annual OGS scholarship and are awaiting acceptances or wait list as I am now. It is a little different since these are distributed by the university's so may have variance in reward timings.

Reporting from uOttawa, nothing yet but I was told to expect mid to late April.

I'm at Carleton and was successful in getting OGS. Notification went out beginning of March.

Curiously do you know if Waterloo's co-op has opportunities for policy analysis within large corps or tech/STEM companies?

Got accepted into U of T and Waterloo and now trying to make a decision while trying to think which will minimize living costs. I wish Waterloo gave some scholarships or funding... U of T while extremely cheap is giving 3k.

If you are trying to minimize costs why are you considering going to the most expensive program in one of, if not the most expensive cities in the country?

Hmm, I was thinking about this! I honestly don't know too much informations about Data Science and what it really opens up! If you have any info on the Data Science specialization, I'd be grateful to hear it!

Im in the MPPA program at Carleton now and the Data Specialization is brand new. The incoming cohort will be the first to have the option to take it.

Interesting, why do you say that? Atm Im least inclined to Munk compared to NPSIA and the MES program but this is the first Im hearing of it being a waste of money/time?

50,000 for a degree seems steep. If you want to work for government go to NPSIA. Funding is better, research opportunities are better, reputation is better, a fraction of the cost and is in Ottawa. Where the federal government is.

Why do you want to go to Munk?

  16. 1 hour ago, sumerian said:

I actually have no idea right now! The fellowship at the MES program is incredible, the program would be fully funded and everything without any RA/TA commitments, but NPSIA looks very appealing in terms of federal govt work, and Munk is just great and closer to home for me... I really do not know at this point!

Going to Munk is a waste of money and time.

Hey everyone, glad to see we have lots of acceptances rolling in!

I have a question i'm hoping someone in this group can provide some answers too in regards to Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS). I've previously been accepted to NPSIA, Munk, LSE, GSPIA, and SPPA and I have applied for OGS at the Canadian choices by their submission deadlines. However, i'm having trouble figuring out when they generally begin to let students know if their OGS application was successful or not. Therefore, i'm hoping someone here can provide some clarification around this.

    I appreciate all feedback thanks.

I attend Carleton's MPPA program and was notified about my successful OGS application last Monday.

Advice: Call each program and ask
