  1. I think a drone would be way more interesting to be rejected by. Especially if you could take your anger out on it
  2. That's really strange. I got my rejection from Stanford via email, and the letter on the decision portal was dated the same day as the email. But interview invites for that program were sent out weeks before that so I already assumed my rejection. Sorry that happened to you
  3. Ouch, I'm sorry. That's my biggest fear, which is probably why I should stop checking portals without email...but I can't stand the waiting
  4. I regularly check my emails (that’s really an understatement, actually...) but I’ve also gotten into the habit of checking the application portals to see if an update was made without an email being sent out/before the email has time to be sent out. Am I just wasting my time? I’m sure the answer is yes, but wanted to know if anyone has ever seen their status change on their admissions portal before getting an email!
  5. THIS. This is so important to remember! Even after I got accepted I had people tell me I was too young. Clearly, the adcomm disagrees, and it’s pretty obvious who has more authority on that decision
  6. Ahhh yes I feel this!!! I’m also applying to PhD programs straight out of undergrad when I finished my undergrad in 3 years and have a late birthday. So I’ll be turning 21 about three weeks into the start of the semester. I had a LOT of negativity that I wasn’t going to get into a PhD program because of age and the assumption that people make about the maturity levels of 20 year olds. It was especially scary because many of the PhD programs I applied to don’t do interviews, so I didn’t have anything to prove myself in person really. But I’ve managed to get accepted to one PhD program already (awaiting funding) and I also applied to a couple MS programs just in case. I’m really glad I found you all in a similar boat
  7. Should we be doing app deadlines for funding? Or for acceptance in general? Several of the programs I applied to had one deadline for funding, and a much later one for no funding consideration.
  8. THIS. My partner keeps telling me that there aren't people who have worked as hard as I have, and there aren't a lot of people applying for my degree program. It always gives me hope, but it's a total false hope. I'm seeing people with many publications, and all I have is a year and a half of being a research assistant with one poster and supposedly a publication but no update from PI. Not to mention average GRE scores and a slightly above average GPA...
  9. Exterior life, i.e. a disappointed mother who I can never make happy (I'm fairly young and was extremely excited about these acceptances.) The first acceptance "isn't a real degree" and the second one (the MS) was a happy reaction from her, because I'm "too...young for a PhD" (with a long, easily misinterpreted pause) and that school I was accepted to is also closer to her than my dream schools. Then she told me she hoped I don't get into said dream schools because I'd be too far away. At this point, I'm just looking for an acceptance I can actually be excited about. Apologies if TMI lol
  10. Both acceptances were ruined to the point of which I was in tears (of sadness) hours after recieving them lol, but yeah I guess. But I bet this year will be your best, I'm sorry for your luck the other years
  11. My first offer (PhD program) came at 7:56 EST as an email to check my status via website because an admissions decision was available. Not sure if that's exactly when the letter was uploaded on the site or if it just took that extra time for it to kick in. The grad director followed up a few days later at 5:13pm. My second offer (MS program) came at 4:05pm EST. All of my acceptances were in the same time zone I was in, so it's pretty interesting to me when I recieve them. Hoping for more! Also, I got an email letting me know my application was changed in status to being referred to the department, which happened two weeks after I submitted my app (not on the dot), and that email was sent at 1:45am EST.
  12. Damn. I'm really bummed out now, but congratulations! Thanks for the update.
  13. I just wish they would tell us! I hate playing this waiting game. Where else have you applied?
  14. According to the results page, someone already got in. Anyone else hear anything? There’s been no posts on the results page about interviews and seems a little early for the first acceptance. I haven’t heard anything yet.
  15. Thank you so much! I didn't think it would be a big deal for me to just do a phone conversation, but just wanted a second opinion.
  16. Hi all! I just recieved my first acceptance on Monday from Rensselaer up in Troy, NY for my PhD in Science and Tech Studies. Today (Friday), the director of the program emailed me about the funding process. Their process is separate from admissions and requires either an in-person visit or a phone conversation. The exact verbage was "As a next step, we’d like to encourage you to either visit us in Troy, or to arrange for a phone conversation with myself and one or two other members of the faculty." He has specified that these are conversations, not interviews. The accepted students day is in a little over two weeks, and it's in the middle of the week for just one day. I really have a lot of commitments surrounding that week that I can't really miss out on, plus securing a flight from Tampa to Albany is difficult (I'd have to fly out of Orlando...). Will it hurt my chances for funding to do this over the phone versus a campus visit?
  17. I know this is an old old forum but did y'all get any funding offers at all?
  18. Congratulations on your first acceptance! I think you should share your acceptance with current professors. If anything, it would have a positive impact on your admissions process since they know they have competition over a student. The damage would have been done day one when you requested the LOR to begin with. Sharing results just makes those professors feel like their effort paid off. I'd recommend it!
  19. I applied as well for Fall 2019 and have not heard anything. I haven't contacted a PI since I only found the program in October, though I talked about them in my SOP. Not sure if I should try reaching out to them, or just wait for the admissions decision. I think I read on the results page that they do an interview weekend? I applied for the Society and Environment division.
