Funding info will come. If by "respond to the official letter" you mean accept their invitation to attend, then you should wait until you've heard from all the schools to which you've applied. For now I would just wait, I think, but I also don't know your exact situation.

As a general statement Re: withdrawing from schools, I don't think it's fair to be pressuring others into doing so because of "others on the waitlist." People don't have a responsibility to those on the waitlist. Applications cost a lot of money, and people are entitled to a decision from the schools to which they applied. There are people on the waitlist every year, and others get accepted, and that's just how it is. Trying to guilt others into withdrawing applications on behalf of people they don't know is, well, selfish in my opinion. Also, rushing into a decision is almost always the wrong way to go. Patience, as they say, is a virtue - it can't hurt to wait to see all your options laid out. This process isn't easy, especially if you've been allowed the privilege to agonize on the waitlist for the next couple months. But people should be able to make their decisions without feeling guilty for not withdrawing.

UNC is a fantastic department and Chapel Hill is super pretty. They've got great people there, it's an awesome choice. Congrats to you!

UNC is me. I got a call, I'm not sure if the rest are coming out today or not. I've been to a couple of the POI's talks on my campus, and he said they like to give the news in "person" to people they know.

I would personally say the downside is worse than the upside. The upside is the very small chance they tell you a date, which they probably don't have nailed down anyway considering they're academics and deadlines/dates aren't real (only half joking). The downside is they're on the fence about you and an email annoys them enough to choose someone else. Maybe I'm overly risk-averse, but I would personally not send an email, although I absolutely understand the agony you're in right now lmao
