  1. I didn't apply to Columbia but I wanted to extend this question a bit - has anybody heard from Rutgers for the PhD?
  2. Excitement: I've been accepted to an MA program, and that program has invited me to apply for their PhD (and thus, to receive funding). Worry: Just when I thought my admissions decisions were over, one more thing comes out. And while I know the school I am attending now, this is a potential $100,000 swing (from having $80k in debt to receiving a stipend), and would shave 3-5 years off of my original plan. So I'm quietly freaking out again.
  3. My apologies, I guess that I wasn't clear in the OP. The Masters would be at a separate university, as the PhD program I applied to did not have a terminal masters track. I'm wondering if it's acceptable to ask how my prospects would look after earning that Masters, or if I would even get a real, non-generic response?
  4. While applying for graduate programs, I received rejections from the two PhD programs I applied to, while I was accepted to a Masters program. I emailed them back for some feedback, and I received some. My question is, would it be appropriate to respond to the email and basically ask, "If I complete this Masters, how would my chances change?" Obviously I know they would go up, but I kind of wish I knew where I ranked in the first place, and whether or not it would be a waste of time to reapply in the future, or if I should alter my approach slightly.
  5. As a recent Villanova alum (which is where I gather you're going, based on your signature), I recommend reaching out to Home Properties of Bryn Mawr, an apartment complex nearby the school. So many Villanova students live there (mostly seniors, who are forced to live off-campus) that the University runs a shuttle there between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm. While I'm not sure they have a list of people looking for roommates, they should be able to point you in the right direction; one of the administrators in particular is extraordinarily helpful, although I forget her name. It's a bit pricy compared to most places of the country, but the Main Line is going to be expensive no matter what, and it is close to the Norristown High Speed Line. If you have any questions about the area, feel free to PM me! Not only did I go to Nova, I was also a History major as well!
  6. I'm gonna say thanks for the advice, but I won't be needing the Rutgers post-bac program, as I got accepted into their Masters program! Still waiting on one more school, but at least I know I'll have a home next year!
  7. I feel that. Haven't heard a single thing yet, and it's probably because of my language experience (started Greek last summer, in Intermediate 2 now). Looks like it's going to be either a Masters or a post-Bac year. Just have to figure out how to pay for either...
  8. Worries: Radio silence from my top two programs, even after what I thought was an encouraging visit back at the end of November, and I know at least the first round of unofficial acceptances went out. I've heard back from only one program, and that was basically to tell me that they were about to start the process. Meanwhile, I see so many people getting success after success after success. I know that there are plenty of options - multiple backup plans have either later deadlines or rolling admissions - but it's getting disheartening. Excitement: I love this stuff, and I'm excited to actually get into the field. I did three major research projects last year for my capstone projects, I had a blast doing them, and I want to do it more.
  9. Long time lurker, first time poster, ancient historian. Applied to Penn and Yale PhD programs and Rutgers for their MA....so far, have heard only from Rutgers, and that basically to let me know they are just starting the admissions process now. Bracing for the inevitable pair of rejections from the first two, and starting to look at some backup plans. Maybe a Post-Bac year to better my languages (I have less than one year of Greek on the calendar, although I'll have completed four semesters' worth of classes by May) maybe a history department that doesn't focus on ancient history for an MA (many deadlines there are either later/rolling). At this point I'd rather just hear so I can start planning.
