  1. I'm in the same place with you... So odd. I'm gonna wait til March 10th and, if it's still quiet, email and solicit.
  2. @SmugSnugInARug congrats! I'm waitlisted at Duq as well. I'm wondering how you came to know about your place on the waitlist, since my email has no mention of it.
  3. @Jenny01 Wow, congrats on your successes so far! So I guess holistic strength crowned with fit is the way to go.
  4. @pyramidstuds Thanks a lot for the reading recommendations! I'll look into them after all of this chaos is over... Best of luck to the rest of your application season.
  5. @j.alicea Thanks!! In hindsight, it does seem to be an ideal solution to apply to Lit or Phil, get the money, and take classes in Hist-Con. Alas, I applied to Hist-Con without a clear sense of their financial predicament and now I'm accepted with zero funding... I think I'll visit the campus and, if nothing miraculous happens, I'll simply have to decline the offer... so heartbroken, though.
  6. Hey folks, A quick question: if the number of applications received by School A is two times the number of applications received by School B, what could it mean? Here's some context: Both are well-regarded programs. According to people I've talked to, there's no real difference in their academic strength. Nor is their placement records very different. Is it because of School A is more well-known? Maybe not. Both are continental philosophy programs, so both are relatively uncharted. Plus, their undergraduate institutions are not highly ranked, so the names of both schools aren't familiar to most people after all. Department size: The numbers of faculty are about the same, but the numbers of current students in School A is also two times the number in School B, although I doubt applicants know/consider this as a factor when they choose which programs to apply. Any thoughts why the discrepancy in numbers of applications is sooooo big??
  7. Aww thank you! I hope you'll be hearing good news very soon :))
  8. @pyramidstuds Congratulations on your success! And thank you so much for your input. I looked up anthrozoology and it seems dope. Could you share with me some of your fav authors/theories in the field? It's indeed very helpful to know the strength of one's sample via conference presentations. Alas, my friend and I are from a hippie SLAC where people don't even talk about anything related to the professional world lol. Now, in retrospect, what would you say make your sample stand out, if you'd be so kind to share it with us? Like creative approach, solid theories, lots of fieldwork, etc.? And you're absolutely right about my mistakenly leaving out SOP haha (I'm from philosophy where sample is weighed much more than SOP). Given my friend's background and strength, I really hope adcoms read samples though...
  9. Anyone else applied this year? I’ve heard all kinds of rumors about them (mostly negative, like they won’t exist for long etc.). Does anyone have some kind of inside knowledge about what’s really going on? (The lack of funding is pretty much confirmed) Their amazing history aside, is it now a bad idea to apply/attend that program?
  10. Hello Gradcafe fellows, One of my closest friends is applying for MA/PhD programs in cultural anthropology, and we've both found it very opaque as to what in the world is the admission committee looking for in an applicant, given that 1) this discipline is relatively new and the norms are more fluid than other older disciplines, 2) method is predominantly inductive thus it's harder to gauge one's capacities, 3) and many other reasons beyond my grasp. Professors at our school aren't helpful since they tend to tell us only the positive things, and I did some research and didn't find a thread specifically devoted to this topic. So I'm wondering what are some of your thoughts/past experience about it -- thank you in advance!!! Some specific questions we have: Writing sample: how would you describe the standards/features of a good/bad sample? It'd be immensely appreciated if people with good application results in the past would like to share with us your samples or their topics!! Fieldwork experience vs. analytical reasoning: which would you say is valued more highly, substantial fieldwork or strong abstract theorization? Interdisciplinary background: is it good or bad to have some knowledge in other disciplines and/or discuss interdisciplinary interests in one's SOP and sample? Fit: how important is it to have a good fit with the department and faculty? These are our main concerns right now (with the sample being the biggest one), but people who have other questions are welcomed to bring them up! EDIT: Since all applications are already submitted, I guess we're not looking for advice as to how to make a stronger application -- but similar. We're trying to get a sense of the general shape of a strong applicant and compare it with ourselves, so that we can be more informed and prepared and able to better understand why X school makes Y decision.
  11. Comparing with other people on this thread, the time I spent on my sample is unusually short. Last year, before October, I didn't know anything about the field. By the end of the month, I wrote a paper in this field for class. For November, I did some revisions and discussed my arguments with some professors but they didn't read the paper (except for the one whose class I wrote the paper for), and that's it. Haven't opened that document since then. I have three acceptances so far, all from great PhD programs highly respected in their fields. It's making me feel timid and confused because I know I'm far from brilliant. Just lucky, I guess. What I do learn from this is that it's important to be able to (as early as possible) locate a relevant, researchable, and expandable issue in the field and develop an innovative yet rigorous line of arguments. (I just realized this goes for any paper lol...sorry for not being able to help.) PS. It could also be that continental phil programs perhaps do not value academic literacy (how many secondary sources that were published recently, etc.) as much as their analytic counterparts. That'd be a factor, I assume. PPS. @UndergradDad I read some of your other posts and it seems that your son is at a LAC. So am I. Feel free to PM me and I'm happy to share with you my experience if that'll help.
  12. Hey, me too! Quite nervous about it though...gonna PM you if that's okay so we can share some notes
  13. Me!! My first offer and it's unbelievable. Has anyone else heard from them?
