  1. I only recently decided I was going to apply for programs again this year instead of waiting another year, so I'm a little late to the party. Fortunately, most of the deadlines for me are mid/late January and mid May (JP, HK). BUT, I have two that are end of November and early December. So if anyone is looking for one more proofread, I would love to get some feedback on mine. PM me if you're interested! 宜しくお願いします〜
  2. Same situation, almost. One of them the deadline hasn't even passed yet so I obviously can't say anything with any degree of certainty. BUT, I have a bad feeling since I emailed the professor who has the strongest connection with my research interests and he isn't taking new students. That said, that might not be a deal-breaker since the format of the program is slightly non-traditional (PhD and research, but more focus on training for students who are interested in working in the industry instead of academia). However, after all this rejection I'm not left with a lot of confidence and it's feeling like it might be a bust this year. Unrelated, but I see you are from Taiwan. I just got back from Taiwan on Sunday, and I loved it! 11/10.
  3. Worry: Rejected by 5/8. Haven't heard back from one and I applied back in January. Two I applied to less than a week ago (Europe), so I don't have any right to worry yet. Still do anyway. I need time to process visas, so each passing day makes me more stressed. And my toenails are falling off. Excitement: I found 100 yen outside my apartment door this morning so that was nice.
  4. 1. American schools care a lot more about the GRE than I thought they would. I made the naive assumption that my actual research experience would be worth more than a stupid test, so I didn't study at all. Did well on verbal and analytical. Ended up flunking the quantitative because what is that section even trying to be? Is it math? Is it logic? I don't even think ETS knows. Do I plan on retaking it? Probably not. It's a stupid expensive test and I likely won't apply to the same schools again which leads me to my second point. 2. Apply to programs that are actually a good fit for me with professors who are actively doing research related to what I want to research instead of tangentially related research. Just because our research is in the same field, doesn't mean there will be much similarity in our research interests. Also, I'm in a cross-disciplinary field, Computer Science - Linguistics. I assumed that CompSci programs wouldn't consider me because my degrees are in Linguistics, even though my research interests are more consistent with CompSci. I ended up getting rejected by the Linguistics programs I applied for because my research interests weren't 'Linguistic' enough. 3. Actually make connections with professors before applying. If anything, they can give you more information about how your application is going. 4. Actually submit those papers you're sitting on instead of keeping them in a constant state of 'in progress'. That might work for road maintenance crews, but it doesn't mean anything in academia. 5. Get richer parents.
  5. I was recommended for admission by a professor within the department who I've worked with recently, but I don't think his recommendation is the department decision and I have yet to hear any decision from admissions. He mentioned me to the head and said he wanted to take me, but I have no idea how much they take professor's preferences into account. There were some hiccups in my application due to miscommunication and that makes me uneasy (my references submitted late because I applied to two programs at the same school and they thought the second e-mail was a duplicate).
  6. Oof. Yeah. I got two fresh rejections in my inbox this morning. I have a job, so I wont be unemployed, but it is not in the field I want to be in. Not even close. I have been applying for other things, but it doesn't look like those are going too well either. 2019, starting off with a swift kick to the shins. On the bright side, the only schools remaining are my top choices and it doesn't look like they've released results yet. One of the schools I have a personal connection who recommended me to the committee, so I guess I'll have to see how much that matters to them. If I don't get accepted even with that backing, I guess I'll just become a Buddhist monk.
  7. I did for three and those were the ones that resulted in rejections, so now I'm kind of scared. But I might need to soon just because I need to start looking for alternatives if this year doesn't work out. This waiting is so stressful, I stubbed my toe earlier today and cried for a full hour because even the furniture is against me now.
  8. Three rejections and five I haven't heard back from yet. The rejections have put me in a bad mood and make me feel like it's hopeless, but I know I shouldn't call it until the official e-mail. My job is pressuring me to tell them whether or not I will be staying, so I'm getting stress on both fronts.
