Well, I guess things work differently in Canada. Not to mention that 'college' and 'university' mean very different things here - colleges are usually for more technical/applied things, universities are usually for more theoretical/academic subjects. For example, I wouldn't go to college here for anthropology, and my brother wouldn't go to university to be a stone mason. He's also hearing back for college way earlier than I did for university, I don't think I got my first offer until mid-March when I applied for my undergrad and that was an early admit.

Today I am all jealous. My little brother is applying to college right now, and he has just been accepted to two of the three schools he applied to - one yesterday, and another, his top choice, today. I'm very proud of him, especially because school has always been difficult for him and he only started doing well and finding out what he really loved (construction and masonry) a few years ago. I just wish we could be celebrating together!

I'm going to guess that I spent close to $2000, but that is in Canadian dollars - the exchange rate just killed me on my applications to US schools. The other really big expense was ordering transcripts from my old school - they have one rate for transcripts, but varying rates for couriering depending on where you're sending them (within Ontario, elsewhere in Canada, or international), so that was almost $300 just on its own. Ouch.

I've read that Darlton said that Claire won't be in this season (or at least not as a regular), but she will be back next season as a regular. So that mystery will continue for a while...

Friday Night Lights. I already watched season 3 (downloaded it) since it aired on DirectTV, but it's on NBC now on Fridays. Such an amazing show. Don't be turned off by the football, it's not just about that. So awesome.

With the tension between Widmore and Richard Alpert, I'm wondering if Widmore didn't get kicked off the island after a falling out between himself and Alpert and/or Ben.

Interesting indeed! Was it just me, or did last night's episode seem to go by really really quickly?

Anyone else getting annoyed by emails from current school?

I'm an undergrad and I participate in university governance. I got a letter recently that was obviously a form letter sent out to all the members of the various governing bodies asking for money. I was like... WTF? Mr. Chair, can't you/your secretary take a moment to see which members are STILL STUDENTS?! I thought about writing a Stern Letter in response, but then I got a Christmas card from the Chair too so I forgave them. -
I'm still in school, but I only have two courses and a supervised study at the moment. Class is just on Wednesday and Thursday and right now I'm waiting on ethics clearance for my project before I can actually do anything. So things *seem* pretty chill. But I still have tons of reading to do for class (most of it terribly boring, ugh), I sit on three committees (two university governance, one academic petitions) that each meet about once a month and have a lot of documents I need to read as well, I work for the health centre as a peer educator and we're planning a big awareness week so I have that to do - scheduling, getting participants, coordinating ten volunteers - as well as our regular outreach, I'm applying for summer jobs, I also work as an exam invigilator for the disability office so next month when midterms really get going I'll have more hours there, I go to fitness and yoga classes at the gym three times a week, and in the next little while I'm going to be assisting in opening up a can of whoop-ass on the student union for their most recent fuck up. Whew! I bake (fresh bread every week!) and watch ER and Lost as well. It seems like I'm doing a lot but honestly... it's a lot less than what I've been doing the past three years of undergrad!

Same here! I don't think I would be miserable without snow but I would miss it a lot. All the places I'm applying to but one are in places that get snow, and that other one is a total long shot for me. I need seasons!

I'll either pass out and/or run up and down the halls of my apartment building screaming for joy (and then have to get let back into my apartment because I'm sure I'll have forgotten my keys in the process). Then call my parents, even if they're at work. And if it's during the day I'd probably go barrelling across campus to tell all my professors and the folks in student affairs and anyone else I run into. Then I'll probably be exhausted and pass out again, but a celebratory dinner at some point would of course be in order. :-D

Same here. And the last one of those I got was over a week ago, lol.

When I applied for a scholarship last summer, one of my references for that gave me my own copy of his letter. It was really well-written (and flattering!) so I definitely made sure he wrote some of my LORs for grad school!

I dated a guy living in Buffalo for a while; this is pieced together from my own experiences and his advice. It's one of the poorest cities in the US and there are a lot of sketchy neighbourhoods (avoid the entire East Side and lower West Side), but there are also some real gems. The areas around the university and Buffalo State College are pretty nice. Elmwood Village and Allentown are cool and artsy. Delaware Park is huge and gorgeous, it's a great place to hang out on a nice day. The Albright-Knox art gallery is near Delaware Park, I've never been but I've heard good things about it. Most amenities are in walking distance (the public transit system is spotty in some parts, but a fare is only $1.50) and there's a lot of good food near campus. Go to Amy's Place, you won't regret it. Chippewa is where everyone drinks but you shouldn't go unless you're with a big group of people. The city is also big enough that bands on tour regularly play there. I think Buffalo is what you make of it; a lot of people complain about it but it's all right.

I just wish I'd known what the Canadian/US dollar exchange rate was going to be when I paid my fees for the American schools I'm applying to, so I would have saved more money!
-
I also applied to 8, that was plenty for me! It's what I came up with after my research and budgeting. I couldn't afford more if I wanted to.

I bake and cook a lot (if grad school doesn't pan out I'm starting a bakery, haha) and plan on giving my recommenders a little jar of the apple butter I made this year with a thank you card. I would only do the card, though, if a) I wasn't as close to them as I am, or the apple butter wasn't freaking amazing.

Bumping because I'm interested in applying to this program, for the Berkeley side.
