  1. Hey guys! I’m currently in first year at UBC for SLP. I know this thread can be extremely stressful in about a month or so when letters/emails are sent out. Just wanted to let you all know that whatever you receive, it’ll always work out no matter what. I was not accepted the first time I applied and I was devastated but came back last year even stronger and was actually happy to have breathing space in between undergrad classes and the masters program. That being said, if anyone wants advice or consoling or if you have any questions, just message me :) I also went to the UofT orientation thing and have the package so if you are accepted to UofT and live in Vancouver and can’t afford to get there I can send you the information about their program as well :) I will try to check this site every week so if I don’t reply right away it’s cuz I haven’t checked! Try not to stress. Be kind to yourself during this process and finish this semester strong! Best of luck to you all!! <3
  2. I was not accepted to UBC last year. In my year off I took two online courses and picked up a job as an SLPA. If you cannot find work as an SLPA, reach out to as many clinics as possible and ask if you can volunteer or shadow. I also work as a Behaviour Interventionist with children diagnosed with ASD and so if you haven’t looked into paid positions , I highly recommend looking for work as a BI. If you haven’t picked up research experience, I also highly recommend that. UBC is a huge research school. I also changed two of my references which I think boosted my application. When you apply next year, maybe mention in your LOI what you did during your year off and how it further prepared you for the program! I think all schools like to see that their applicants didn’t give up and worked hard in multiple areas to be able to apply again. Hope this helps!! and I was in your position last year so I understand how awful it feels. Don’t give up and go easy on yourself!! My year in between applying was super beneficial for me and I’m in a way better mind set and position this year. Best of luck and don’t give up!
  3. Anyone from out of province accepted to UBC? I know it can be scary moving to a new place, especially one with a reputation of being so $$$. If you need any advice on the city, feel free to DM me! For those of you waitlisted or denied, try to stay positive. I wasn’t accepted last year to UBC and I was shattered (especially during exam period, it friggen SUCKS!!!). If I can offer you any advice, try to pick yourself up, work super hard and just focus on gaining more experience working with SLPs, which will only be more helpful once you are in the field. Reach out to as many professors or professionals in the field as you can. The year off in between applications turned out to be my most productive and informative year and now I feel more prepared as I enter an SLP masters. Do NOT give up! Follow your passion, be kind to yourself and keep working hard!!! PS. Congrats to all of those who were accepted this year!
