  1. As some previous posts have asked, I was wondering if everyone could share whether or not their schools have any news of their plans for September? I’ve been accepted to UofT but we haven’t heard anything about whether or not there will be online courses or not. If anyone could share what other schools have been saying, that would be great!

My friend who is in the program right now was waitlisted last year. She called Janet to ask and was told that there were around 100 people!

That really surprises me! Seeing as there is approx 40 spots in the Western program, I wonder what prompted them to allow 100 people to be on a waitlist position. I feel as though that's just giving false hope to applicants, and almost shows a lack of confidence in their own program.

  3. Does anyone know if COVID-19 will affect any dates for acceptances/rejections/etc.? Just wondering, because I've heard that all the schools/faculties are pretty much shutting down (and parents may need to stay home if they have children because those schools are canceled too), so I was thinking there may be some sort of delay? I hope not, but I also don't know when the universities officially make their decisions/submit them to ORPAS.

This is sort of unrelated, but for the people applying the second/third time around could you let us know what you did to strengthen your application? I'm starting to doubt I'll get in the first time around, and so I was wondering what I need to be doing to improve my application.

Also, does anyone know if it would negatively affect my application if I applied to another program too?

    Thanks in advance,

This is also my second year applying! Last year I applied but I feel like it was a complete waste since I barely had the grades. Since then, I took some additional courses and also re-took some prereq courses. Like @SpeechPlease said above, I never stopped and I made sure I gave 100%. I also spent the year getting into research with neuro-imaging and schizophrenia (nothing related to speech really, but I took what I could get!). I also did more volunteering but made sure it was a variety - so I originally had experience with ASD/other development kiddos, but I expanded and ended up volunteering in feeding studies/videofluroscopy labs, a clinic for augmentative commmunication, private practise, and therapeutic swimming and equestrian camps along side an SLP, OT, and PT.

On another note, your application may be fantastic, but it mostly depends on the cohort of the year (how many people apply, their applications, etc). I know that we're all smart and we all deserve to get in, and it's frustrating when our application is amazing, but there's always going to be somebody out there who has a couple grades higher than us, or more experience.

    Hope this helped!

Yeah it's tough... I would have to spend thousands and thousands in extra courses to erase the courses from years ago that are bringing my average down. I had a strong 4th and 5th year but just not enough to completely erase my third year from the total 20 courses. Super frustrating!

I'm in the exact same boat - ORPAS doesn't differentiate between semesters, so they ended up dipping into my third year to finish off the 20 courses, I didn't realize that so what I thought was a 3.73 sgpa ended up being a 3.64, which is so disheartening. I had good grades in that year, but I had one awful grade which just plummeted my SubGPA. I guess there is a point where you can always take more courses but spend thousands of dollars trying to erase bad marks.

I went to the MMIs last year and a few people said they had 3.80 or 3.81 sGPAs, so it wasn't a 3.87. Plus they could be even lower than that if that's what they were admitting. Who knows what it will be this year though.

I think the MMI cutoff was a 3.77 sGPA last year! I’d like to think there’s hope of it going down this year, but it seems like every year the GPA scores for every school gets higher and higher :(

    Orpas has posted our Sub-GPAs!

I called ORPAS and apparently that isn't our Sub-GPAs! They get posted later on in February and ORPAS sends out an email! The lady on the phone said to not worry about the number since it'll be a different one when the sub-GPAs actually get posted later on!

    Hello,

I have applied to the following colleges:

    - University of Alberta (First Choice)- Found a potential Supervisor

    - University of British Columbia

    - McGill University - Found a potential Supervisor

    - Western Ontario University

    - University of Manitoba

    - Dalhousie University

    - University of Saskatchewan

    -Laurier University

    - Queens University - Found a supervisor

I honestly wanted to apply to just one but my parents wanted me to be on the safe side. So here I am lol. Good luck everyone!

Hi, how did you go about applying to Queen's? I thought they didn't have a Speech program!

But for ORPAS, you need to enter individually the grades of the prereqs

I think you can put "IPR" for "in progress" as the grade for the prereqs. They will see on your transcript that you are taking those courses in the winter semester. I know someone who has gotten a 'conditional offer' because she was taking some prerequisites that were in progress during the time that the application was due!

hii! Yeah that's why I started working under an SLP this summer who will be providing me with a reference gladly. I'm just worried the number of hours won't impress the schools since I know other applicants have sooo many more committed hours.

Good luck to you too :)

I actually messaged UofT about whether they care if somebody else had way more hours than me, and they said that as long as you had 14 hours you were good, but what matters most is the variability of the settings and populations you encounter!

    Hope this helps!

  11. @AintThatSpeechy I interpreted the ORPAS sub-gpa calculation as the last 20 half unit/10 full unit grades no matter the years. No matter if you took courses after your undergrad, as long as those courses are not graduate level or college level (or any other restrictions), it is included in your new sub-gpa. Consequently, I believe that one of your courses from 3rd year 'drops out' of the sub-gpa calculation. To decide which one gets pushed out, I followed the order that appears on my transcript (I'm not sure if that is what ORPAS does, though!). So for me, I took 3 courses post-undergraduate at another university. Those three courses got added into my sub-gpa, and three courses I took in 3rd year got removed from the calculation.

Sorry my explanation is a big confusing, but hope this helps?
