  1. I have a friend at UIUC who writes speculative and I believe he's mentioned that someone in his cohort writes pretty heavy genre stuff. I'm surprised I haven't seen Illinois on any of the genre lists, though I'm not entirely sure what he sent in with his sample (he used to write both spec and realistic fiction but has really been writing only spec for some time now). I'd also say any program that's genre-fluid so Northern Michigan, Iowa State, Louisiana State (not technically open-genre, but they encourage and allow multi/hybrid genre). I know Mona Awad is an alum of the PhD at University of Denver and her stuff is heavily spec. She also teaches at Syracuse with George Saunders and I think it would be absurd if they wouldn't be chill with speculative having two of the most prolific speculative writers out there right now. I also think it really comes down to who is reading your app and how strong the stor(y)ies are. I think there are plenty of speculative pieces that could pass the "New Yorker test", since Karen Russell and George Saunders have stories in the New Yorker and Kelly Link was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize with her last collection. I think as more time passes, the more programs (and profs/adcomm particularly) will open up to speculative as just a legitimate genre and "literary" (as if speculative can't be literary).
  2. Same. The first couple weeks of Feb I got a waitlist, an acceptance, and a rejection but since then it's been quiet on all fronts. Perhaps I was a bit spoiled by the avalanche of news, but it's excruciating to sit in this radio silence.
  3. I think the letter was literally just thanking me for applying, no waitlist or rejection. I didn't get the "Your application has been received" email, just the regular letter. I think they're working in a bit of an antiquated system. This goes for everyone feeling the ache of rejection season, but I think the only real issue of a bunk season is the money-sink app fees can be (RIP my savings account). The process of applying, putting your work together, thinking about your work and you as a writer in your SoP only makes you a better writer and a stronger candidate for next time. I think I'm a better writer now than I was even in November when I was putting all of my stuff together. I know all this doesn't do much to alleviate the pain of rejection, but hopefully it can numb it a little. Then just prove them wrong next year, show them what they missed, etc.
  4. That's my thought, too. I've been neurotically peeking in my actual mailbox every day since they sent a "thank for applying" letter through snail-mail lol. Sorry your decision season's not showing up for you. If it makes you feel any better, this is my second season applying and it's looking like I'm not going to have much of a choice between schools. The two others in my writing group that went to their MFAs got rejected across the board their first season, too. Idk if this is your first, but the good thing about MFAs is your application really can only improve every year.
  5. Someone said they were waitlisted for fiction yesterday in the Draft, but I haven't heard anything about acceptances/more waitlists/other genres.
  6. I can only theorize, so this truly holds no water but I think UT waits to release their waitlists rejections until both programs have contacted those they're offering spots to. From the results page, it looks like a bunch of rejections come early March, including one that was "cancelled" because of late transcripts/recs (slowly dying knowing one of my recommenders submitted a full month after the deadline (they received like 12 frantic emails asking them as kindly as possible to submit but they were on their own schedule (hahahahaha))). I also think that because both MCW and NWP have such prestige, they may be contacting a lot of folks outside of the US and want to wait until they know all of their acceptances have replied to their offer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  7. I think it's possible. The results page from last year shows the two Michener acceptances came a day apart. But also be aware that Michener isn't handing out many spots and it's very possible that the few who did get in didn't/don't seek out spaces like Grad Cafe and the MFA Draft. If it wasn't for this person's mom, we wouldn't have heard anything about Michener. (But I think it's safe to assume they're making decisions since NWP made calls this week).
  8. I wonder if phone scammers notice the uptick in accepted calls during late Feb/early March
  9. My poor little heart cannot handle this lmao. NWP and Michener should notify a few weeks apart so those who applied to both aren't hit with double-despair.
  10. It really does get your brain working in loops, likely because it's so active. I will say, I was in the Draft two years ago and this year's is much calmer and way better run. The admins this time around are extremely helpful and while there are a few "woe is me" posts, it's mostly just a super helpful place. That said, it is pretty heart-wrenching to watch all the acceptance/waitlist posts come through for one of your top-choice schools.
