  1. I thought the rejection from Penn was sweet as far as template rejections go, even if they didn’t notify of the decision!
  2. Email updates... NYU DGS Robert Young responded to me but said notifications go through GSAS centrally and that they don’t notify students directly. Based on last year I guess we have to wait until mid-March for the official rejections. No response from Maryland DGS Gershun Avilez.
  3. I definitely met some people in the past who were accepted late off waitlists and arranged to come meet faculty and sit in on a class or two, even if they didn’t or couldn’t make it to the official visit!
  4. Never had acne in my life and yet...pimples ever since my ACCEPTANCE. Wtf
  5. Wanted to say no they definitely aren’t! And thanks for the reasoning. Guess I’m chasing the high of the acceptance ?
  6. Thank you! And congrats on those amazing choices!!
  7. Good faith question here—the rest of my schools are implied rejections IMO. Thoughts on committing elsewhere before official notifications come through?
  8. Can’t seem to find a DGS contact for NYU. Anyone have it?
  9. I’m eager to commit and looking for English DGS contact info for University of Maryland (also emailing NYU and Columbia)...not tolerating those lingering April rejections! Edit: emailed Gershun Avilez at Maryland and a general contact at NYU. Think I’m chickening out on Columbia for now.
  10. I didn’t see anything about CUNY funding travel but it can’t hurt to ask! (I’m local)
  11. Is this about Columbia? If so, did you have an interview? I’m in same space but didn’t have an interview and sort of figured anyone hearing back was being accepted or rejected off their short list, and that non-interviewees in 20th/21st are implicitly rejected/will receive rejections after this first wave
  12. I think I’m in a unique situation because my one acceptance is from a school I’ve already gone to (just finished my MA at CUNY in September) and in the city I’ve lived in for the past few years/am from near. I went into this process sort of assuming I’d either get shut out or get into only CUNY, because I felt my application was so much more compelling there than anywhere else. Really not sure what I’d think if I had one acceptance from a school I otherwise had no connection to, though if I felt it was competitively ranked I’d probably take it.
  13. My skin has been atrocious even still after getting the one acceptance I wanted. Stress does NOT leave the body in a timely manner
  14. Just wanted to also express my sympathy and solidarity here. I have a partner who would move with me to wherever I needed to go, but I wasn’t in love with the idea and what that might mean down the road in terms of resentment or limiting his career options just because I’ve figured out a bit more of what I want before he has. I felt going into this process and still that the best thing for me, personally and academically would be to take an offer in NYC, where we live. I FULLY expected to be shut out or receive only one offer, and the latter is looking to be true—luckily, the one offer I have is where I want and need to be. Rejections from other programs, lower and higher ranked, have all given me relief simply because of the difficult alternatives that would come with picking up and moving my life, even if my partner came with me. Wishing you all the best and congratulations for all you’ve already accomplished!
  15. Following up on this. I emailed Davis’ DGS and many hours later received an email to check portal for status update (not a reply from the DGS). Their standard rejection letter was awaiting me. If you’re in Davis limbo and want to rip off the bandaid I recommend doing this! I’m inclined to believe anyone they have waiting around is just waiting for a rejection.
  16. TBH I’d be glad to just receive a rejection—I already live in NY and wouldn’t choose to move to Davis (though it sounds cute haha) and turn down CUNY, a better fit anyway. I’m eager at this point to just commit. But thank you both @Indecisive Poet for the encouragement, just emailed their DGS!
  17. UC Davis...I wasn’t in the first round of rejections or acceptances. I have an offer I would take over Davis even if I got in, should I just bite the bullet and email them for an update? I really can’t stand the principle of programs that keep you on the hook until close to April without even being waitlisted. Edit: what to even say in an email like that??
  18. @nideaqui I went to Cornell undergrad and will start by saying I absolutely love Ithaca—the scenery, Ithaca Farmer’s Market, Cornell’s Johnson museum. However, it can be super isolating as a grad student in a place like Ithaca, as Cornell can become intense and there are few distractions during the long winters (really, the spring semester is almost entirely winter, and then summer is absolutely beautiful). I know grad students struggle more than undergrads with this, since the social life is very different. Ithaca has steep rent for upstate NY. Happy to answer questions about Ithaca or the english dept in particular if you want to PM me!
  19. Every email I get today drives me crazy and ends up being like:
  20. I also haven’t heard from Michigan, though I did apply to the joint English/Women’s Studies program. Are you just English?
  21. Ah so happy for you and keeping my fingers crossed you get off that list!!
  22. Messed up that I’m excited for mine to come so I can be closer to committing
