presidentialpudding got a reaction from elismom in So few theoretical linguistics MA programs in the US!
There are lots more programs than those you’ve listed! However, theoretical linguistics is not as in demand as applied linguistics and sociolinguistics so most programs focus on those in addition to theoretical. Almost all universities in the US will offer an MA in linguistics; I know that UIUC offers a very good linguistics program. If you are interested in pursuing a linguistics PhD, you will probably find most programs focus on both applied/sociolinguistics and theoretical.

I live in a coastal area of Europe so 1/2 inch of snow leads to gridlock and chaos. Any more than that was definitely a snow day when I was in school and I only remember 2 or 3 of those haha. They also seem to be extremely efficient administratively - already have my I-20 so if I do accept I can start tackling the visa in a pandemic nightmare (especially since the embassy is partially closed).
Also just saw your news about McGill - that's great news!! I'm over the moon for you!!

Champaign-Urbana's winters aren't too bad for being the midwest, but I grew up in the snow belt of Ohio. Last week's 10-inch snowstorm was the most snow they had seen in a single snowfall in about 8 years. It can get cold (this February has been exceptionally cold), but it's nothing like Chicago's winters. If you're coming from the south, then it will take some getting used to though.
UIUC is definitely strong in linguistics. I'm so happy for you!

¡Enhorabuena! I did my MA there so let me know if you have any questions...I know more about lit than linguistics though. It's a great program

@spanishdr UIUC has just emailed me their decision (acceptance!). Looks like what JIG told you was right.

Hi, about the UIUC decision, I sent an email to DGS and he said the result will be soon available no later than late February. I applied to UIUC too, and I am literature track.
Has anyone here applied to Notre Dame? I am also waiting for their decision too

You’re definitely at least waitlisted, if not accepted! Did they mention you being a finalist at all?

So you should be!! It’s the only application I have remaining which I would consider taking over my other offers. If I’m rejected from them, I’m more than happy with my Davis offer, if I get in (looking unlikely) I’m 90% certain I’m taking the Davis offer because it’s the second highest ranked of the schools I applied to and the campus looks gorgeous.

I’ve not heard back from either. Georgetown historically has released results around now so I’m hoping we’ll get some decisions this week or next week. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern with UIC, however.

Woke up to my first acceptance this morning! Beyond ecstatic! Also the program which I interviewed with a couple of weeks back has sent me a request for financial info for visa processing which can’t be sent until March so I’m assuming that’s at worst a waitlist (hopefully an acceptance)

I’m not in history (I’m in Spanish) but my undergrad was in history and Spanish and I have professional experience in teaching rhetoric at college level so  I thought I’d throw my two cents in. I agree with what the others have said, I honestly don’t think your opening paragraph is as strong as you may think it is. Think about your audience - it won’t just be the professors you’ve spoken with and the first paragraph is key in setting the tone of how they view the rest of the statement. It should have a hook, yes, but it doesn’t need to be a whole paragraph. You need to be concise and precise with language. The example statement from Berkeley which is often used as a holy grail statement does this most of the time, however, there are a couple of paragraphs in there which add very little to the general narrative even there. This first paragraph just feels like an attempt to mimick a more artistic style but it’s lacking any real substance.

You also seem to struggle to take any constructive criticism from other members in the forum. Think about what a PhD entails - you will be critiqued on all of your writing and scholarly output continually and this will make you better. The feedback people have given you (including me) is to try and help.

Just my $0.02, I am not trying to cause any issues.

Hey guys! I was active in the Spanish thread last cycle, and am currently  in my first year of a PhD in Span. lit at Princeton. Just wanted to check in and say best of luck to everyone. In terms of interview tips, I'd add that in my experience, the interviews for PhD programs frequently asked me about a favorite or influential book I had read and why, a favorite film, potential projects or areas of interest for the future/for a possible dissertation, as well as a question or two about why I want to go to grad school, where I see myself in the future, and that sort of thing. Generally, they were fairly low-pressure. No grilling or intense interrogations. Pretty much a conversation about your interests! I was asked to talk about my undergrad thesis, to explain more about a possible interest I'd mentioned in my SOP, and to talk about a book I had connected with recently. I mentioned Nada and was asked what I thought was the most memorable scene of the book for me. I believe I was also asked to talk more about my experience going abroad and what I'd learned from it. Most of my interviews were 80-100% in Spanish which I assume is partly because I'm non-native. I heard that some other interviewees who were native Spanish speakers were asked more questions in English than I was. Anyways, just wanted to pop in. Hopefully this will helpful to some of you! Best of luck this cycle!

¡Gracias amigo! I won't say publicly just so as to not jinx it. I'm weirdly nervous and looking forward to it as I really like the program. That's great news about the Durham acceptance! Mucha suerte with the scholarship application!!

    ¡Enhorabuena!
Be yourself. Be prepared to talk about your research or the research you want to do and why, what interests you about their research, things like that. Know your SOP well as they may ask things about it. Make sure Zoom or Skype are up to date beforehand. Be prepared for the "describe yourself" and "best/worst qualities" and "tell me a time" type questions. It'll probably be bilingual. I think for the one interview I had for my M.A., they asked about my hobbies, and we started talking about paella (I was living in Valencia at the time).
Anyone else have any interview advice? What did I miss?

Can I ask which one of your excellent schools has realised your own excellence? I understand if you don't want to say.

I have news of my own. I was accepted to Durham, but without funding because it's the UK, so now I have to apply for an important, extremely competitive scholarship for all humanities Ph.Ds amongst eight or schools in hopes of getting funding. I'm excited for the acceptance, but trying not to get my hopes up for getting the scholarship.

Received my first interview invite today! Makes it all feel a bit more real and the department is absolutely lovely from the communications I have had with them.
