I’m from Nigeria. I’m very nervous. Wondering why she didn’t just call (as in the case of everyone else) but mailed to schedule one instead. Fingers crossed for an acceptance.

I'm sure for international students they prefer to arrange convenient times prior to calling. Although it's good news, might be inconsiderate to wake someone up at 3am, lol

Hi guys. Been lurking for the past few weeks and finally decided to chip in. I've felt a kind of kinship reading you guys, and can't wait to meet y'all when the fall session begins.

About Iowa, I got a mail from Sam Chang (for fiction) last night asking when I'll be free for a phonecall/Facetime. I'm an international applicant, so last night (23:45 thereabout) should be around evening for you guys (16:45/17:45). I guess that means they aren't done sending acceptances. So be patient, guys. It'll come.

This is MAJOR! Count that as a win, super congrats!! Where are you based??

@jen20 It's generally recommended that you stick to short stories for your application portfolio rather than novel excerpts; they're a better showcase of your ability to develop a plot and characters (since one chapter of a novel isn't giving the full picture). Moreover, if you're sending in a published novel, adcoms may wonder what you stand to gain from being in an MFA program -- which is, after all, an opportunity to develop a novel-length work.

If anything, I think you'll need to address why you want an MFA despite having a published novel.

co-sign. from what i've gathered, most places are ok with a novel excerpt, but prefer the opening chapter and they expect that it not require set-up/context, should be able to speak for itself. you should definitely/must include a short story or two (depending on where you apply), and that's what will  give them a sense of your ability to tell a story.

I would refrain from mentioning anything related to a publisher or publishing, let your work speak for itself. you could inadvertently shoot yourself in the foot by making it seem you have things all figured out. in all the work they review they're looking for potential, to help you grow and get to the place of publication. to say you feel you're at a place where you're ready for publication would lead some to question, then what can we do for you?  caveat, my comments are geared towards novels, most places love to see published short stories! shows commitment and hopefully talent!

Can anyone suggest proper etiquette for  how to respond after receiving an acceptance? I am still waiting to hear from 7 other schools, and I don't want to accept the offer preemptively, since I don't know the funding situation yet.

If this is an email acceptance, and they haven't yet provided the breakdown of actual offer, you should thank them and state in your weords how you're excited for the opportunity, and look forward to learning more via conversations or a campus visit. keep it short and sweet, they'll follow up with more substantive stuff later. hope that helps.

I originally was going to apply to a ton of schools across the country for Museum Studies/Museology. But I decided to only apply to UC-Boulder for their Museum & Field Studies Master's and then Colorado State U. for their Public History master's with a museum studies specialization.

I've been wanting to go to grad school for so long and I hate the anticipation and waiting times! Hopefully I'll hear something back soon. Boulder said people would be notified by mid april but CSU said by the end of february. I'd prefer to go to boulder over the other but idk how long I should wait IF i'm accepted to CSU, for a possible acceptance from UC boulder... UGH the suspense is killing me and stressing me out.

I constantly am checking my emails and mail

Hi there, wanted to let you know you're in the section of Grad Cafe primarily for Creative Writing. You might want to hunt around and see if there are threads for your specific program or area of study. There's definitely a lot of overlap and folks talk about the process and anxiety a lot here, but you might also see advice that may not be suited for your program or process. Hope this is helpful!

Those of you on draft, if there are any of you, did any other acceptances for Iowa go out? Yesterday there was nothing here for any genre, not that I’m expecting anything fo poetry this early.

Looks like there was another fiction announcement today, but haven't seen anything for poetry.

My phone rang with Iowa City code. It was Samantha Chang. I'm in for fiction with GTA funding. I don't remember what I said, something like thank you...??? ? Third try. I'm not sure if this is a dream btw.

Late to party, but this is so dope. Congrats!!!! :)

Really I asked because I was rewatching the squid and the whale and thought it had fantastic writing. Also some of the main characters are writers.

However, personally, I watch all types of films. I must admit though, I've never seen animated porn with narrative arcs.

Hehe, wanted to give you a hard time, but check out some manga or anime ecchi (if you’re bold, check out some hentai — NSFW).

not sure what you have access to, but there’s a US tv show, Bull. This past week it aired an episode, S04E13, child of mine. It was absolutely the best piece of tv writing I’ve seen in years: sharp, timely, complex. Hits the intersection of race, class, and technology in a retelling of the biblical Judgement of Solomon in very fresh and surprising way. I was shocked at how good an episode it was. I’m really stanning the episode writer, Marissa Matteo. Ridiculously talented. Watch it and you’ll understand how amazing her accomplishment for a platform not known for originality.

Hi. I’ve been kind of lurking through this forum the last week or so since I found out it existed lol.
I got accepted to Washington University by email today. I replied mostly to let the people worrying know that my portal still says “ready to review” and I was accepted. So not sure it can be trusted at the mo.

I also applied to UMN, Iowa Nonfiction writers workshop and UC riverside. So far waitlist at Minnesota and accepted at Wash U. I’m so stoked!

Salute! And to clarify, WUSTL for CNF, yes?

@GernderKitten @sallyvalley did you see the rejection on the results page? Think it’s real? I checked my portal and I’m still in limbo. Are either of you, or anyone else really, willing to check your portal and report back?

I'm pretty sure that rejection is someone being cheeky and expecting to be rejected. They have their email receipt as tomorrow 2/6 (Could be from Asia, but tons of people are stalking WUSTL announcements, I would expect more noise if rejections were going out).

Yesterday I got an email from GMU with a rough timeline for funding announcements and info about visiting campus. I visited the program when I got in last year, and I'm wondering if it's a good use of time to visit again. I think it'd be nice to show face and shake hands and such, but I'm not sure... Thoughts?

Is there a particular admitted student event? If there's an opportunity to meet other potential students, then yes, that might be a great use of time. You might meet someone that you really connect with and that may impact your decision.

If it's an ad hoc, self-designed visit, where you basically go around and maybe have a quick face to face with some faculty admin, may not be as beneficial to oyu if you've done it before. Only you know where the gaps are.

In either case, will they connect you to current students you can ask questions?

Thank you!! It's good to know that about Tallahassee - my only point of reference for it is the Mountain Goats album ?

FSU's website doesn't have info displayed very well, so I'm going to write what I was personally told and warn you that other ppl probably have different offers:

AFIK, all students in the program are accepted with 3 years of full tuition waiver + some funding stipend. The offer I got was for for a stipend of 15,600$ per year. Students TA 2 courses per semester. Students are expected to take 3 courses per semester for the first 2 years; year 3 is dedicated entirely to thesis writing, but TA duties continue.

A 3-year program is a dream for some, and that's awesome! Personally I prefer a 2-year program b/c  I don't want to spend too much time away from my family (I'm an international student, so travel is complicated). I also recently finished my BA after 6 years (!), so I'm a bit sated when it comes to academia at this point ?

That being said, my main goal is to come out of the program with a finished, polished manuscript. So.. who knows, maybe a third year is for the best? IDK...

Good luck with your apps!! Hope you hear good news soon ?

Awesome! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. A number of folks I've spoken to in 2 year programs wish they had a third year for focus on their manuscript. It seems like in your first year you're finding your feet, and voice, and second year you're just getting into your groove. Several 2 year programs offer an optional third year, but funding is not guaranteed. As an international student, I wonder if a 3 year program helps mitigate some of the visa related stress? I'd be frazzled if in my second year I had to complete my manuscript AND worry about getting out of the country before my visa expires, sigh. Do you know if FSU or any other 3 year programs would consider waiving (if any) residency requirements or teaching requirements for year 3? That way you could complete your manuscript from home if you so choose, but have that flexibility with your visa. I know a number of doctoral students that do this. But yes, you have hard choices, but GOOD problems :)  Congrats again!!

  14. Congrats on FSU!!! Tallahassee is a lot of fun. Only been there for pleasure :)

so great to have at least one acceptance in hand. It’s fully funded for three years, yes? And third year is primarily focused on your thesis, yes? What are your considerations between a 2 and 3 year program?
