  1. Hello, I got a reject from Princeton University yesterday, but I am waiting on Stanford and U-WM. For Stanford, my POI reached out a few weeks ago to confirm that the department had nominated me, and the last hurdle is for the subfield to get a slot. With the acceptances for Stanford on the result page, I am yet to get any information from POI, any possible thoughts? Just curious!

Yeah my research looked at how Nigerian women used western education during the 1960s and 1970s to advance in society. Yes I read the Invention of women during one of my courses this year. It would be interesting for you to read Bibi Bakare-Yusuf's article 'Yorubas don't do gender' which is a quite well none critique of Oyewumni's work. Ife Amadiume Male Daughters, Female Husbands: Gender and Sex in an African society.  I have my fingers crossed for you as I saw Northwestern results have just come out in the last few days.

Ohhh interesting topic you've written on. Thanks for recommending the other literatures, I will find time to peruse them. Yes! I received a reject from Northwestern, seems I will have to withdraw into my closet for now lol.

Trust you are well, and hope you've your decisions and or offers!

    Cheers.

  3. What a sad application cycle for me! Applied to Northwestern and Buffalo, PhD African history. Interviewed with my POI at Northwestern (though he warned of super-low admits based on research field), hence, not that sad but sad lol that i've got a reject.

The sadness doubled when I heard from an informal source few days ago that Buffalo (SUNY) have budgetary cut and won't be going forward with all application.... though no formal information about this yet...I had high hopes at SUNY as I've secured both Primary and  Secondary POI already!

Those are the only schools I applied to! Any shoulders to  cry on here...lol

(I just got a personal note from my POI at Northwestern, so emotional and motivational, Covid-19 really wrecked a lot) drops mic! Withdrawing to my closet!!!

Sorry about the rejection, wishing you all the best with the rest of your apps! I heard Northwestern will be taking far fewer students than normal--maybe half the cohort size as usual. I don't think results will be out for a few more weeks, unfortunately.

Concerning Northwestern, I emailed my POI few days ago, and he stated that decisions will be out in a week (next week).

  5. Anyone applied to PhD History at University at Buffalo (SUNY) here? I heard they have cancelled the application process for Fall 2021 cohorts based on budgetary reasons. I reached out to the DGS already, expecting feedback for the past two days. It's frustrating lol.

Does anyone have more information, I will appreciate.

Ah so exciting, University of Ibadan is really cool. I want to spend time there at some point in the future to access the National Archive.

Yeah gender and women studies in West Africa, that was the focus of my masters research. Some edited volumes  I really enjoyed were

Hafkin, Nancy J., and  Bay, Edna G. (eds). Women in Africa: Studies in Social and Economic Change., Cole, Catherine M., Takyiwaa Manuh, and Stephan F. Miescher, eds. Africa after Gender? , and Falola, T.  and Aderinto S., Nigeria, Nationalism and Writing History, has a chapter on gender which is interesting.

Fingers crossed for the two of us. African history is subset of history so hopefully we will bump into each other at a conference or something.

Yes! the National Archives at Ibadan housed lots of records on colonial history and their huge database of colonial and postcolonial Newspaper is bonus. Recently, I have been doing some archival search there.

Interesting to know that your Masters research was focused on gender and women studies in West Africa. Could you interest me more on the research?

Those are interesting reads you highlighted. I'm presently reading Oyeronke Oyewunmi "The Invention of Women: making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourses"

I do hope we bump into each other as well to have a comprehensive discourse (smiles). I wish us the best outcomes.

  7. Hello, I applied to African history PhD at Northwestern et al with research interest in  gender and women studies, and geographical focus on West Africa.

I have both Bachelors and Masters in History from Nigeria (University of Ibadan).

Sincerely, the wait for admission decision hasn't been funny at all. Checking my email almost every day. Nice to know I am not alone.

It is just safe to accept that admission decisions are not rolling out till late January and mid-February.

I'm on the reserve list for Euroculture. I emailed them to ask my ranking. I doubt I'll get in. There's probably dozens of people on the reserve list. :(

I am on the Reserve list for Euroculture as well. I don't know if there's a way to know one's ranking on the Reserve list.

Good luck mate! I hope that both of us will be accepted.

By the way, I am a bit curious about the general profile of the applicants. Because I have seen that there are certain people coming from the most prestigious US universities with pretty high GPAs. Personally, my university has the highest reputation in Turkey and my GPA is hopefully good enough, but its international recognition is limited in comparison with an average European or American institution. In short, I am slightly stressed as the deadline is approaching ?

    I hope too.

However, I took my time in going through the last thread for 2019 applicants, I think the most important factors are: your motivation letter, recommendation letters and academic comes last.

Hi folks, also I am planning to apply for International History program at IHEID. In the forum, I haven't seen any post written by an applicant of this program. Does it mean that history program is less competitive? Is there any former or prospective applicant who is able to inform me? Thanks a lot.

Hello @Menocchio II I'm also applying to International History program, I have combed the past forums but not much of International History applicants so far........hope to see you in Geneva.

    Best wishes
