How important do you feel the distinction is between R1 and R2 schools? I know R1 are typically more prestigious and sometimes have more resources, but if the internship match and EPPP rates are high at an R2 school, will the lack of an R1 be impactful after graduation?

Minimal honestly. R1 or R2 Status represent the entire School, not the program itself

I agree that it's minimal since what gets a school to R1 status is usually having an academic medical center (which is not super relevant to how good the program is). Additionally, I have interviewed are R2 schools where the Psychology department is one of the most productive (research-wise), and therefore get preferential treatment and resources from the school.

  2. Go for it! I think with any background, RA positions can be tough to find, so I think you're experiences would help show how qualified you are! I would definitely recommend being as flexible as possible with location. When I applied to RA positions, I applied all over the country, but I understand that that may not be an option for everyone. I would also look for RA or Research Coordinator positions in psychiatry departments as well, since I feel like psychology departments often hire undergrads who were a part of their lab. Lastly, make sure your application materials highlight how this position fits in with your future goals and research/clinical interests. Best of luck!!

hi all :~) for those of you who have had interviews already, I'm wondering how in depth you were expected to go for the typical if you had to design your masters thesis etc/or just related questions on what kind of research you want to do..... I definitely can talk about my interests but I'm worried I'll come up short on details and seem ill informed or under prepared ?I've been doing some reading just trying to formulate something concrete to talk about, but I'm just wondering how much detail professors expected from others regarding like specifics of study design for the research you want to do. thanks in advance!!!!!!

Hi! Most of the times I've been asked that question, it seems like they want an example of a specific research question that takes into account what opportunities the program/lab offers. For example, I would not propose a research question using an adolescent sample if the program does not have any faculty that have experience with that population. I would also have an idea of what you would expect to find in the results (based off of a few background readings). Overall, I think most people use this question to see if you are able to generate research questions and think a bit about their feasibility in a graduate program.

I've also heard of some professors asking for a bunch of specifics regarding study design, but I never experienced it. Does not hurt to be prepared, but also if you don't know the answer, it's better to be honest! I think the majority don't expect you don't have a full study proposal ready to go since that's part of graduate school training anyways.

  4. What would you all say are the best questions to ask a potential mentor that will help you figure out fit? I've already looked at the questions on Mitch Prinstein's interview guide, but does anyone have any other questions that have helped them make a decision on choosing a program?

just heard from louisville admin. She said they're "sending out admissions updates by the end of the week". I have not heard from my POI since the interview process so I'm assuming that's a 'no'? Or is it common to get an acceptance without hearing from the POI before mass admission emails go out?

I would think that admissions updates would include offers from POIs, but if it doesn't, then it's pretty strange to not here from them before the mass emails.

Hey all, this cycle I applied to 11 programs for clinical or counseling psychology and received 6 interview invites so far, which was a good number for me. However, after finishing 4 interviews, I found out that I have been waitlisted from 2 of the ones I really like and rejected from 1. I think one of the reasons for this might have been because I didn't show diligence or self awareness that a prospective grad student should have, especially about research. In short, I don't think I prepared for them well enough. I still have 2 interviews to go and I have already started preparing for them, but I really wished I had done the same for my top choices.

Is there something I can do to reach out to my PI's to show them that I am still motivated to work with them? Or if grad school doesn't pan out this year, what can I do? Please note that I am in the US on a student visa, and to stay and work here in the next year, I would still have to be on some type of visa.

    I appreciate your help!

You can probably can reach out to the PI's from the wait-listed programs, emphasizing your research interests and specific projects you'd be interested in that align with the opportunities at that program, I don't see that harming your chances!

Yes, hopefully people won't horde offers. I know they are nice to hold onto but someone is out there waiting to love the one you're going to turn down. So make their day :).

Just to clarify, I definitely would not hold onto two at a time! I'm more concerned over what to say to the admissions committee for now, since I want to be able to make my decision after my interviews are completed!

  8. Might be a silly question, but what is the etiquette when it comes to holding on to an offer? I'm still waiting for my interviews to finish so it feels weird to accept an offer right away, but it also seems weird to ignore it...Are you supposed to tell them you'll get back to them? haha halp Also I only have one offer, so not holding on to multiple at the moment
