  1. In 2020, I got the email Wednesday, April 15, 5:10 pm. In 2017, I got the email Monday, April 17, 10:06 am. This might not be super helpful. Also, both of these were acceptance emails and for the study in Asia. It's possible that rejection emails or those for different regions came at different times. I would guess that later in the day would be more common, but I hope someone from other years has more info
  2. I'm really doubting that June would be ok for travel. I'm even worried about August/September. Boren will almost definitely release country-by-country travel decisions. For now, all we can do is keep an eye on Department of State's travel advisories.
  3. Yes, there's usually one in DC, which lasts a couple days. It's not totally mandatory, if your program dates conflict or something. I think it's generally in early June. Last year they postponed it to end of August. But later postponed it indefinitely, since Covid didn't get any better by that time. I really doubt there'd be one in person in June this year. Boren hasn't even decided on sending people abroad at all, it seems. The current cohort was told we'll hear country-by-country decisions by April 16th. As for the orientation, I would guess it will be virtual and probably still postponed until later in the summer, if not later.
  4. Would you be able to reapply for scholarships or the whole program? Or would you still be stuck paying the full price even after getting back from Boren? But yeah, we should hear back April 15th or maybe 16th. I'd be very surprised if it falls on any other day.
  5. Finalist for Japanese! Anyone else?
  6. We were postponed until summer or fall 2021 for now, but told that we'd have to be back by the end of 2021 no matter what. So as of right now, none of our awards have actually been rescinded, though many of us are dropping out. Some are reapplying in hopes of being able to do something long term. Doesn't seem like we're getting any sort of priority for this cycle, but there was a question on the application that did identify us as 2020 recipients, so maybe that's something.
  7. Somebody else did the bulk of work, I just added days of the week and the info for the last 2 years If we're taking bets, I'll say March 2nd!
  8. See my comment on page 2, I listed the finalist notification times from previous years. That will give you a rough idea.
  9. You're right, it's probably not a great idea to be making that change last minute, especially when things are so uncertain. Kansai Gaidai was definitely a wonderful experience for me as well! Really glad I had that opportunity.
  10. Last minute question: are people applying for the summer domestic component? I was not going to, but now I am thinking maybe I should. I could always change my plans later. Though one of my concerns is that I may be in a situation where I do the summer component through some online program and then it's still not safe enough to travel in the fall, so I'd be stuck having "done" Boren and having the service requirement without really getting a good experience.
  11. At that time I went to Kansai Gaidai University.
  12. I'm applying for the Japanese Fellowship as well! Nope, it doesn't mean anything at all, it's only someone to help you make your application better. My undergrad university didn't have a Boren Advisor or even anyone who knew what Boren was, but I still got the Scholarship. It's not really something that makes or breaks your application.
  13. Yes, that's right! We will be notified whether we are finalists, alternates, or rejected.
  14. Applying to the Fellowship for Japanese again!
  15. Almost definitely in the next couple days, I would say. Here's more: Semifinalist notifications: 2020: Jan 13 (M) 2019: Jan 16 (W) 2018: Jan 16 (T) 2017: Jan 18 (W) 2016: Jan 28 (Th) 2015: Jan 13 (T) Finalist notifications: 2020: Feb 27 (Th) (45 days later) 2019: Feb 28 (Th) (43 days later) 2018: Mar 1 (Th) (44 days later) 2017: Mar 7 (T) (28 days later) 2016: Mar 8 (T) (39 days later) 2015: Feb 26 (Th) (44 days later)
  16. None of these, unfortunately. Used to have WeChat, but could not recover my account. Let me send you a private message with other options and hopefully if anyone else is interested, they will reach out to one of us.
  17. Nice! I'd be down for a group chat, but probably wouldn't want to get Slack just for one thing. I'm open to other options though.
  18. Going for Japanese, so IUC-Yokohama. How about you?
  19. Yep, right there with you!
  20. I have no idea, since I didn't work on the application myself, but have you tried emailing them? They seem like they would be pretty responsive about these things.
  21. Oh yes, that's definitely the same thing. 500 words is the limit and you won't even be able to submit if any of the essays are even one word over. I'd also say don't copy and paste at the last second that you have to submit, because I remember their word counter being just a tiny bit different from Word (maybe in how they count hyphenated words or something like that).
  22. We just got an update yesterday, actually. Only 3 countries are allowed for Spring 2020 - Taiwan, Thailand, and Cambodia. Everyone else is allowed to defer to Summer or Fall, but must still come back by December 31, 2021. I guess now a lot of people will reject the award, so maybe there will be some alternates moving up. Not sure though, so it's best to reach out to a Boren advisor directly.
  23. What Essay Worksheet are you talking about? The word limit is 500 words on the actual application portal. Haven't really worked on my application yet, but all I really need to do is update mine from last year. A bit daunting, but there's still lots of time to think about improving my essays. How about you?
  24. I don't think anything official has been published yet, but yes, they said they may hold some or all of the 2021 CLS online. I would not expect anything to roll over to next year, they will just ask you to reapply, like it happened this year. Yeah, if you can't be in the country yourself, it does take away from the experience A LOT. I would not say it defeats the purpose though. They still work really hard to deliver the best instruction possible. And many people do CLS because there are no other options available for them. It would still be a summer of intense language lessons for free. I doubt they'll have any trouble filling up the spots with students, even if it is not what we are all hoping for.
