Hi! Has anyone heard anything from Western's SLP waitlist?

Hello! I got off the Western SLP waitlist this morning at 11:00 am. I was in the first quadrant. This was my 4th cycle applying to UWO SLP, I was waitlisted twice (2020 and 2021) and rejected once (2022) before getting in this cycle! I accepted the offer! Best of luck to everyone else on the waitlist; be kind to yourself during the process 🤍

I don't thinkcollege teachers can be used as references, but I would suggest reaching out to the school directly to confirm. For instance, UofT has posted this blurb regarding college teachers: "Applicants must arrange to have two academic referees complete the Confidential Assessment Form and write an academic reference letter. Referees must be full‑time faculty members (normally with a rank of lecturer, sessional lecturer, assistant professor, or higher) at an accredited university. Please note that college instructors are NOT considered to be appropriate academic referees"

Hello! I am also applying this year and emailed Western SLP regarding CDA professors being an academic reference. They confirmed that you can use 1 CDA professors as an academic reference, I am using an undergrad professor as my other academic reference.

  3. Just got my rejection letter. If it makes anyone else feel better, with the stats they provided on the rejection letter there was only a 8.7% acceptance rate meaning 91.3% of applicant did not get a seat. Very disappointing, this year was extremely competitive. This is my third year applying to the Canadian schools, will be looking into American schools for the next cycle.

@SLPPLS101 I applied to several American schools just in case and thankfully have heard back from all of them and got into a couple pretty competitive programs! If I don't get in to one of the Canadian schools I applied to, I'll likely go to the states. However, I'd obviously prefer staying in Canada if I can because of the cost would be much lower. Friday can't come soon enough. ?

Which American schools did you apply to? I am thinking of doing the same next year if I do not get in this year!

    Hey!!! ??

Do you mind sharing your stats?

Are you applying to SLP this year as well?

Hey! I am also applying to SLP at UofT, Western, and Dalhousie! I have a 3.70 sGPA and cGPA for grades in addition to 200 hours volunteering with an SLP in a school as well as an aphasia program, 400 hours working in an audiology clinic and over 100 hours providing education on aphasia for the Alzheimers Society. Lastly, I have 220 hours doing concussion research on varsity football athletes along with authorship on the research and attending the 2021 Canadian Psychological Association Conference to share my results. This is my first time applying to audiology! In 2020 when I applied to SLP I had a 3.67 sGPA and in 2021 I had a 3.70 sGPA. Both times I got waitlisted for all the schools I applied to, fingers crossed this year will be my year! Best of luck for you as well.

  6. Hello! I am applying for audiology for the first time this year at UWO and Dal. I had previously applied to SLP for the past two years and after working at an audiology clinic I fell in love with the career. Good luck everyone! If you have any questions, I have gained some knowledge in the application process over my previous application cycles, please don't hesitate to ask!

Additionally, GPA calculations are out on ORPAS!

I'd suggest looking at some of the older threads. From what I can remember in the past it was possible to get into Western with a 3.6 but I think it may be harder now as they've become so inundated with applications. I also believe it's possible to get into University of Alberta too from what I've seen on older threads! But others can attest to this. I don't want to be a downer or discourage anyone at all, but as of last cycle I did not know anyone who got into UofT with a GPA under 3.8 (this doesn't mean it isn't possible, simply just an anecdotal remark on my behalf). Both friends of mine who had a 3.7 were waitlisted at UofT and did not hear back. With a 3.6, I think it may be more difficult to get into UofT, McMaster, Dalhousie, and McGill. It would be worth trying with UofA and Western.

Hello! I had a 3.70 sGPA last year and I got off the waitlist for UofT (ended up not finishing with a B+ in anatomy and had to turn down). But there is hope! UofT really focuses on GPA, but do not underestimate the power behind a strong letter of intent and references.

  8. Hello!

I just got offered a waitlist position for Dalhousie S-LP. Does anyone know if we can still send updated official transcripts with grades from the winter 2020 semester to the university given COVID-19? I know in an earlier email Dalhousie said this was required but it wasn’t reiterated on the waitlist email. Thank you for any insights you can provide!

I was recently waitlisted to Western - don’t know how to feel about this. I emailed the school as I was told they usually tell you what quadrant you are in. She told me I was in the 2nd quarter... Not sure what this means since we have no idea how long the list is. Anyone know? Thanks! :)

Which email did you contact? Was it Janet?

Hey! Just curious.. I am also considering going into a CDA program if I do not get off the waitlist but I'm wondering why you would choose to attend a CDA program and still apply for entrance next year? No judgement here! Just most people I've seen will purées CDA and work in that field for a few years to gain professional experience and then apply again to SLP later on. Just wondering what your thought process is :)

I did not do well in statistics in 3rd year and took a different one this semester (and thankfully did a lot better) and I know that’s what dragged my application down. I went right from high school to university and (honestly) I’m scared to not do school, so I’d rather fill my year off learning more within the field (my hometown is Barrie and I can live at home while I do it) and apply again for SLP. Ultimately, I know I’d rather do SLP than CDA if I can get in! If I don’t get in again, then I can start a career in CDA instead ☺️

Hey! @slp.dreamer I'm currently a first year student in the Dal program. Last year we got emails on April 1st. However, because of all that has happened this year, I would expect it will take a bit longer. But you should find out soon! Let me know if you have any questions about the program.

I have found that during the application process Dalhousie has been the most difficult communication wise (did not know if they got my application till March, do not answer phones on Fridays or Mondays, never responded to emails before application deadline, did not post application supplement till a couple months after they said it would be on the website), does this improve once you are a student at Dalhousie or does it just get worse?
