  1. I see no reason for you not to have your thesis advisor write for you. Their letter will speak to your fundamental ability to do historical research, which is not subfield specific. Your interests are also expected to continue evolving. I wouldn't even consider those fields to be especially distant, both being connected to medieval gender and sexuality.

Really only you can decide whether you should go for the PhD. As you've seen, there are tons of threads on this forums discussing it.  You'll likely not have a tenured position in academia after finishing, so can you live with a job in, say, academic administration or publishing or something like that? Those are areas where history PhDs tend to end up.

I'm setting up some Zoom calls with POIs at programs I've been accepted to (!!) Would love some advice about the sorts of questions to ask and things to pay attention to when assessing offers!

I’ve done one Zoom with a prospective advisor so far. I asked about the makeup of the program in terms of size and fields and about the culture of the school more generally. You’ve already been accepted, so I feel like some pressure is off and you should ask whatever questions you still have about the program. Definitely ask to be put in touch with current students if you haven’t already.

Does anyone know if there's a spot where one can find when to expect their acceptance/rejection listed by school? I saw someone previously post at the beginning of the week implying they knew this week would be a big week of decisions, and I'm curious how they knew that. I've applied to BU GSAS and there is no place where it says when to expect a decision.

They were probably looking at the results section on this forum. I applied to BU as well, and judging by the last couple years we should expect to hear something from them around the 17th or 18th.

I’m in a weird spot because I’m American but also African (Uranium diplomacy and labor history). I’m finding it’s really hard to find a school that has the faculty for my research now that basically all the experts on the Belgian Congo have retired or died.

Sounds interesting! Hope you get some good news soon.

    Ah ok. Congratulations!

im guessing since I haven’t heard, mine is a reject then.

Maybe. I get the impression that admissions there are quite subfield-based, maybe yours hasn’t been decided yet? I’m in modern Europe fwiw.

    Hi everyone

First reply but been lurking awhile and anxiously awaiting results. I just receive two rejections, but both from small programs that didn’t feel they’d fit my research goals (Wayne State and Western Michigan)

anyone else apply to Michigan State?

Hey! I’m one of the two (edit: seems like four actually) Michigan State acceptances on the results page.

I mean, if they’re taking more or as many as they did last year, that’s good news for folks who applied and are hoping to get accepted.  It may or may not be indicative of other trends, but we will have to see how that all plays out.

On the other hand, might not be so awesome given the job market, but that’s a whole additional can of worms, right?

The professor I exchanged emails with at Chicago said they had taken 11 students last year and might take a few more this year.

@jpc34 That’s what I was suspecting, too, though it’s interesting that their acceptance notification came so much later than ours. Wonder if it’s also linked to field, though.

Who knows. I hope we do hear something about assistantships this week!

Is the other UWM admit (the one who just posted today with the note about MA at UWM and funding) on the forum?

Just wondering how you were notified about funding.  In my admit email, I was told that we’d be getting word about funding by February 1 and nothing’s come through yet.  Just wondering if I need to be checking the portal/PAWS at this point.

I suspect things are somewhat different for them since they are already at the school. They didn't mention anything about an assistantship, which is what we're both waiting on.

Has anyone else received emails from schools encouraging them to apply to FLAS? I've received them from two schools now (I've applied to FLAS at both!). The first was from a grad coordinator and the second from my POI at that school.

Wondering if anyone happens to know A. if this means anything regarding my application status or B. if I should be replying with a "thank you for thinking of me, looking forward to hearing back" email?

I got a generic one from Chicago. As much as I'd like for it to be meaningful, I really doubt it.

Re: UWM - I got a really good feeling about the people in the program, but I’ve got some pretty grave concerns about the funding situation.  Still, after my wholly unsuccessful season last year, getting in feels amazing and I’m hopeful.

I’m still waiting to hear on the funding piece, and from my other apps, because in between applying and getting accepted, I had a major shift in my career (to the point where I’m now making twice what I was making at the time I applied for PhD programs—I literally got all of my apps in and then got the job offer), so there is a lot more at stake for me now.  Luckily, I’m single and have the backing of my family, so all I have to worry about is myself and two cats.

Very exciting time and good news (if slightly stressful news!) coming when we needed some.

    What’s your field?

I'm in modern Europe. Information online points me in the same direction re: funding unfortunately. I also applied to all the other schools in your signature (among others), so let's hope we both get good news from them soon :)

Question: Why assume that non-tenure jobs in academia are bad jobs, or not even a job?

Temporary faculty positions at community colleges and universities offer higher salaries than the U.S. average. The majority of jobs in the industry are not tenured as well. Being unemployed, getting fired, and changing jobs are common for anyone. Plus, we are already being paid for doing something we love.
I don't understand why it is assumed that getting a job in the industry will necessarily better than a non-tenured job in academia. For me, as an immigrant who is not a native English speaker and without a strong network, I can't imagine a better job than teaching the history and culture of my own country. Even a temporary contract at a community college would be an excellent job in the eyes of many people with similar backgrounds to mine. It's also a good job for the average American, I believe.

Most of the non tenure-track jobs out there will be part-time adjunct positions. These usually come with no benefits and are paid quite poorly, even if you manage to cobble together enough contracts to reach a full course load. I agree that full-time lecturer positions with benefits aren’t so bad, but those are not especially numerous in US academia.

Hey everyone - I've had mixed feedback on this so I was wondering if I could get your two cents. After I submit applications, is it a good idea to email faculty I've had positive contact/informal meetings with to thank them once again for their time and let them know that I've applied? My contacts were all in the late summer and I'd like to remind people about our discussions, but I do not want to come across as annoying/disrespectful of faculty time.

I’ve similarly been asked to let one professor know when I submit my application. I can’t imagine it would hurt to send an email thanking them for their time talking/Zooming/emailing.

For SOPs does anyone have advice for how they should start? Not how to start writing them, but what's an appropriate kind of opening line. I'm pretty much done drafting but keep going back and forth on the organization.

I’ve been thinking about this too. I think attempting to start with an anecdote or quote is just too corny in my case. Maybe if someone has an actual relevant and interesting personal anecdote that would be good to start with, but I think I’m going to begin pretty straightforwardly.

Posts are down this season (so far) but don't let that deter you from asking your questions, especially since three faculty members and several current graduate students are actively lurking.

Wonder if this is any reflection of application trends? Time will tell I suppose.
