Hi guys! Could anybody please explain to me how this SSN thing works. Will I be able to receive it once I am in the US? Or perhaps I must receive it, if am funded by my school? Perhaps I must have it to get my stipend? If I can get SSN (actually, I would prefer to), how is it done? I guess I need to get it through my school, right? Thanks!

Thank you! One thing I am trying to understand about WiFi in the US. If I get a smarphone with WiFi and use it only in places that have free WiFi like Starbucks - will I have to pay Verizon for the internet? I mean that data charge. Or do I pay this data charge only when I am in places where there is NO free WiFi?? In other words, is there a chance of having WiFi on your smartphone and not paying for internet if you are using it in the right places? -
SOP = statement of purpose ...and another one that you will see often on this forum is POI = person of interest = a professor you are hoping to work with.

Thanks a lot!

Could you tell me what are the best sites to share big files with somebody? I mean, I know that there are sites where you can upload a music file or a video that you want to send to your friend but can't because they are too big. But I don't know which sites are better. And another thing: can I upload my file in such a manner that only me and my friend to whom I will send a link can have access to it?

I wonder if when you are calling them it is a free line, I mean you won't have to pay for the call, even if they transfer you 10 times...

Snippy, eh? I thought in the US all customer service people are polite....
-
Getting it set up - you mean installing it in your apartment/house? Why is it a headache? I've heard that customer service is bad. But my first encounter with Comcast was not bad at all. I used the Live Chat on their website several times and their assistants were super nice and helpful.

Ok, I was leaning towards Verizon (for some reason) - I guess it was intuition! I will use them, then. -
Hi! I have the following question. I understand that references in an article one submits need to be carefully checked. But I was wondering if anybody will check references in my article on the other end in case they want to publish it. I mean, what if I make a mistake, a minor one, like writing just "Continuum" instead of "London: Continuum" (I mean the publishing house)? Or something of that kind? And what if, God forbid, I misspell the name of an author (I still mean references)?? I would not want the article to be published that way!!

Ha, I've been asking myself the very same question today! And browsing AT&T and Verizon websites, looking at their smartphones. I would certainly love to have WiFi always with me. And some of them can be used for Skyping - cool! But I was confused by prices. Seems like for some of them I can get into 2 yr. contract paying minimum 15/month - for talking/texting(?). But there is also this data charge... So the internet is not unlimited, right? I wonder if will be enough if I, say, Skype a lot with my smartphone... By the way, could anybody tell me, which one would you choose - AT&T or Verizon - as a cell phone operator? Are they more or less the same of there are some important differences I need to know of?? -
Oh! I did not know.

I think now is the right time to search. I have already found an apartment - around 3-4 weeks ago. And when I was still looking through my friend in Philadelphia, the realtor told her that the best apartments will be gone by September. Of course may be they just wanted me to pay the deposit asap But if you can search now, do it now, because you will be much more confortable if you already have a place when you arrive to Philly. By the way, do you really want to live next door to a penitentiary?

Well, if you are interested in this area, you should start reading books and articles and from them you will get general insights. As for the strong programs, look into rankings and research schools - you will find plenty of info on their websites. If you don't know what is going on in the field and you want to apply for fall 2012, you should start reading asap.

I've been told that Fairmount is a decent area. Center city is better but Fairmount is OK as well.
