What Has Been Your Biggest Challenge In Applying To Grad School?
Strangefox replied to DrKT's question in Questions and Answers
The biggest challenge was to start and to believe that I can do it. Then it was easier and easier every day -
How does this forum differ from PhDcomics.com Proceedings?

This is crazy! -
May be that was a problem. You should not just assume that they are good fit, you should ask them. Also, even if they are good fit these profs may not be taking students this particular year, so you should ask them about it as well. Contacting profs will help you eliminate programs that may look like a good fit but in reality aren't. It's great that you want to try again!

Very interesting info! I wonder why there is so much spam there and not so much here, on Grad Cafe. Is it some difference in moderating tactics? -
I believe there is something you can change in this situation. 1) Apply to more schools, then the chance will be higher that one of them will have enough money for you. 2) Make sure that there is a perfect fit between you and some faculty members in these programs. When I was rejected by one school this year, I was told that my application is great but, as they do not have enough money to take all people they wanted, they had to take only those with the best fit - and that was not me. Contact faculty in all schools you are going to apply to, tell them about the research you are going to do and ask if they would be interested in supervising you. I think if you research fit really well, you will surely get in next year - because as that professor wrote you, your application is great. That is why I prefer this answer. Now you don't have to improve your application, you just need to search for fit.

What do you mean by old and new PhDComics Proceedings? I thought there is only one PhDComics forum... -

Interesting post, thanks! -
I don't know... For me "compared with other applicants you suck" would be the worst reply I could imagine For me it's better to know that I am a good applicant but that they didn't have enough funding for me this year. But may be it's just me...

It is very bad that he does not want to talk about things that worry you. I say - start researching grad schools. Because one things is to imagine how great it would be to apply and another things is to actually start applying. This way you will see how it feels when you really start doing it and if if feels right, I say - continue. Now it's the right time to research schools, study for GRE, order your transcripts, etc. I started preparing to apply in April last year. If at some point you feel that you relationship is more important that applying, you can stop the process at any point. Or you can finish it, see in what programs you will get and see how you will feel about the idea of going to one of them instead of staying with your husband. It's sad but it's true that in such situations we really understand what we mean for another person and what another person means for us. It's these situations of choice or hardship when one needs support and understanding. I say - you husband already failed one test by not wanting to acknowledge what you want and not even being able to discuss it. Let's see, may be if you show him how serious you are about applying he will change his mind. Good luck! EDIT: And I agree with Newms's advice.

It is definetely not very good of him to make you defer your dream because of his plans! On the one hand, applying at 30 is not a catastrophy. On the other hand, if you really want to do it now... Does your husband understand how important it is for you??

Great idea! I haven't thought about that Thanks!!

So my surname is quite long and it is certainly not American I have just imagined how at a conference a person who announces presentations will be struggling to pronounce it correctly And I know he/she probably won't - because even in my home country they always stress a wrong syllable Would it be polite - when I am at the lectern - to say smiling: "Or, and my surname is <this> not <that>"???? Because I certainly don't want people to remember me by the wrong surname! What would YOU do in this situation?

Skills + determination + self-confidence.

I wonder if I can take 3 pieces of hand luggage on board: a handbag, a laptop and a stick umbrella... I guess I should just check with airplane companies...
-
Oh, so there still is hope!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
-
I have a confession to make - I am big fan of stick umbrellas I have a couple at home and I am afraid it won't be easy to take them to the US with me.... I know I can buy umbrellas there! But I really like my umbrellas Is there a way to take them with me??? I guess they won't let me take one on board as a piece of hand luggage, right?

Do professors care if you wear sweatpants all the time?
Strangefox replied to InquilineKea's topic in The Lobby
Does he really work dressed like that? -
I seriously doubt that.
-
Well, at least he brings in money (as you wrote)... But of course his approach to studying looks like a mockery

I tried to watch the graphs and all I could read is: "You do not have permission to view this attachment."

So you probably have to go through a lot of posts every day? I mean, looking for people who are going over the top. Are forums separated in several sections so that each moderator has a section to work with?
-
And what are moderators' responsibilities?
