  1. That's a great news! Thanks, John!
  2. Hi everybody, Do I need to know by heart how to convert pounds into ounces or yards into inches on GRE? One books says I don't. Another one says I do! So - where does the truth lie?? Please advise! If I need to know them - perhaps there are some more measurements I should look into? I have no problems with the most obvious ones: seconds, minutes, hours, meters, kilometers, grams, liters. But in my country we don't use inches or ounces!! Thanks!
  3. Hm. I am not from the US and I will definetly write everything myself. But people do ask their friends or professors to look through their SOPs and writing samples and to tell their opinion on them. I see nothing criminal in that. But not for money, of course! I mean a friendly advice. I would not ask a person to review my SOP for money, I find it a bit strange...

Thanks for your reply! You live in Vernon and may be the situation is a bit different in Willimantic? If there is a bus, can't I use it to get to grocery stores? I definetely can live without a run in the park or a cup of coffee in a cafe in the morning If the situation with getting to places is not as terrible as in Atlanta (and I have read a lot of bad things about living in Atlanta without a car) then I think I will be able to live in Willimantic and study at UConn...
  5. Nice story Looks like they tell people about the unscored section and/or offer them money to do it at random!
  6. You mean, you didn't have an unscored section? They did not even offer it to you? Oh, how lucky you are! *envy* And you took it in Seattle? Ok, it seems my theory about international students is all wrong
  7. Hi Geilezeit, Could you tell me, how did you know that the section is unscored? Was it written in your test? In what part then? May be you are an international student? May be they inform people who take GRE outside English-speaking countries about this unscored section because they undertstand (oh, may be there is a spark of humanity left in them!) that poor international students already have enough stress from this test? I am international - and I hope the miracle of an announced unscored section will happen to me!!
  8. I guess you are right... *sigh*
  9. Ooooooooh!!!!! Why did they change that???? Wicked wicked WICKED ETS people!!!!
  10. By the way I have read some place, on this forum as well, that some people were informed in the beginning of an unscored section that it is actually unscored... They wrote (as far as I remember) that it was mentioned somewhere in their test... It seems kind of unfair Why some people get to know that a section is unscored and others don't?.. I myself just hate the idea of doing this unscored section on top of everyting - feeling like an ETS guinea pig - as if the test was not long enough without it!!
  11. Thanks, John!! By "fill-in-the-blank" you mean there will be a box where I will need to type my answer? I wonder why they don't mention it in their preparation materials... Are you sure it was not an unscored section? P.S. BTW I am StrangeFox, not StrangeLove but it does not really matter of course
  12. Ok, so if I don't have a car I can still live around the UK campus in an appartment for $500 with utilities and be fine, right? The city is a sprawl and public transportation is not perfect but it is still not as terrible as in Atlanta, right?
  13. Hi, I have tried taking the official Powerprep test and I would like to ask those who used it and have already taken the actual GRE: does it look exactly the same? For me it is very important to be prepared to what I will see on a test day. I was really afraid that they use some small font or a background that will make my eyes tired immediately. But what I saw in the Powerprep was kind of nice and I was relieved. So I will get the same kind of font and background and everything at the actual test, right? Thanks!

Hi everybody! Tell me - is it possible to live off-campus in one of the towns around Storrs that were mentioned in the thread and commute to campus? I don't have a car and I am not going to have it in any forseeable future but people in this thread mentioned that there are few grad students living on-campus so it's better not to dwell there alone among partying undergrads. I really hope I can live off-campus and go there by bus...
  15. Thank you! I will definetely try to answer all the questions - even if I have one minute for the last 10 left! [WAG - I like that! ]
  16. As far as I know it is better to answer all the questions, even if you do it randomly. Please somebody correct me if I am wrong
  17. Wow! It is a major breakthrough in the science of GRE-ology! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. And have you tried answering all but the last 10 or 5 questions correctly? I wonder what the result would be then...
  19. Thanks!!!!
  20. Thanks, John! That is very interesting! I also have read about letter preferences among GRE designers but I did not really believe it I am actually rather suspicios of magical ways to get great results on tests And I was also inicially suspicios about that thing with the first questions but then I found the same information on the forum and in an on-line article... In the end I decided to write this post because I wanted to be sure. And now I definetely am!
  21. So it is impossible to live in Chapel Hill without a car, right? What about prices in Chapel Hill? Most of all I am interested in renting ones
  22. Oh, it is all becoming more and more clear to me... I see why people can get very different results on practice tests and on the official test. There are so many threads about GRE where people are complaining that they don't understand where this difference comes from. Well, if the weight of questions depends on whether they appear in the beginning or in the middle and in the end - a preson may be faced with questions that he/she knows better in the beginning while taking a practice test and may not be faced with those questions on the official GRE, and if this person doesn't know about this rule he/she may try to move quickly throught the beginning, thinking that it is important to give all questions equal amount of time, because they are equally important. But it is not true!!!! Thanks god I know that now
  23. Great! Now the Theory of The First Five Questions is officially proven to be correct!! Thank you so much for sharing the results of your experiments!!!!
