No. It can be also an article, published or unpublished. The most important thing - it must be a sample of ACADEMIC writing.

Congratulations!!!!!!!! That is just awesome!

No reaction... Hm... I wonder if this link has been of use to anybody...

As far as I understand it, universities are not informed about the very existense of such scores. In fact, they DO NOT exist, because they are cancelled I am sure your report card does not say anything like that.
-
Read carefully information about scores cancellation on the GRE official website. I believe I saw there that universities do not get to know anything about your cancelled scores.

Why did not you explain that other professor that it was a mistake, that you had sent letters only to him, professor X and professor Y and that the latter had decided to forward your letter to all other members of the department. I think, the situation is clear and you did nothing wrong. It is fine to contact several people from the same department. No all of them, of course

Hi, guys! One more question about visas. In the application form of one university there is a part: "Type of Visa Expected" and the list of types: A-1, B-1, B-2, F-1, F-2, H-1, H-4, J-1, J-2, L-1, L-2, TD, TN. I know little of visas at this point but they apparently want me to choose something! What would you recommend?

Page headers in the SOP
Strangefox replied to Strangefox's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
So, "page 1 out of 3", "page 2 out of 3" would be the correct wording here, right? -

I think it's better to contact your potential advisors and I don't think it's late at this point. Contact one of the professors you would like to work with at each school. You are going to mention some professors in your fit paragraph, right? So contact one of them. You can introduce yourself and ask if they are going to take graduate students next year. If you have read their works or want to use their approach, mention it. If you have a research project, mention it too. You might find out that some schools are not a good fit for you and save time and money. Some professors may give you great advice. Just do not send letters too late. I believe contacting professors too close to the deadline will make it look like you have begun working on applications too late, that you are not very serious or not well organized...

To find out the answer to your question you should either read each school's website very carefully or contact their graduate coordinators. Sometimes all the materials are submitted online and sometimes only part of them are. Anyway, your transcripts will likely to be the one thing that definetely needs to be sent by regular mail.

Hi! Another question. I want to put page headers (that's how they are apparently called...) in my statement of purpose and writing sample. Should I write the name of the university there? How is it better to arrange all things in the header? "University of ******, Statement of Purpose by Strangefox---------------------page 1"? or "Statement of Purpose, Strangefox--------------------------------------------------page 1"? or "Strangefox: Statement of Purpose,--------------------------------------------------page 1"? Also, can I and should I use bold or italics there? ("--------------------" won't be there, it's just to show the space between the two parts of the header) Thanks!

Hi! Some people say that it is necessary to mention major flaws of your application in the SOP. My biggest flaw so far is 3.5 AW score. Should I write something about it? The only explanation I have is that I am an international student and that the analytical writing section is a stupid, stupid, stupid part of GRE!!!! but they will already know about that from other parts of my application. My verbal GRE score is 640 and I believe that my SOP and the writing sample are well written. I really would not like to mention AW score because I do not know how to approach the topic, I don't feel that it is necessary and I don't have space for that in my SOP!!! May be I am wrong? What do you think? Thanks!

Stay cool. You can do it!

Oh! That is complicated. So I say: "University of Maryland is the greatest university in the world." without the, but "I graduated from the University of Maryland.", "I studied at the University of Maryland.", "I am applying to the University of Maryland."???
-
Hi! As far as I understand, I do not put "the" before names of universities. NEVER. For example: Awesome University The Awesome University University of Awesomeness The Univerity of Awesomeness Am I right? Are there any exceptions? Thanks!

Thanks!

I was also wondering, can I choose between different kinds of visas if I am accepted to a university? I have not thought about all this stuff yet but I definetely would not want the visa with a requirement that I return to my home country for two years once I finish my degree... I hope they won't make me choose it... I am not married so I do not need a work permit for my spouse.

Thanks, guys!

Hi everybody! The website of a university says the following for international applicants: "If you are requesting a DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility form) for J-1 status, please provide the following information: City of birth, country of legal permanent residence, present position in the country (i.e. student/faculty, as well as the name of the institution, if employed by a company, name of employer, etc.)." What is this Certificate of Eligibility form and how do I know if I need it? And if I need it, how am I supposed to provide the aforementioned information? I mean, it is clear that I can write it in an e-mail to the graduate secretary, if asked. Why then do they list it among documents that I need to send to the Office of Graduate Admissions?? Thanks!
