Well, it depends on a program of course. I wrote "at least" because when I was looking for programs to apply to and browsing their websites, 550 was the least acceptable score I saw. Some programs indicated that you need to have 600 or 650 in each category. There are programs that state that there is no minimum score. I read a lot of threads where people discuss this issue. And it is my understanding that ok score is 1200 with 600 in each category. It can be a little lower. But only a little There are so many different opinions about the GRE! I am an international student myself, so I read very carefully all I could and made my conclusions. I read about people who got into good programs with the total score of 900. I read that in some programs they do not even look at your application if your total score is 900 It's all very convoluted... Everyone has to decide for him/herself if other parts of their application can compensate for a low score. So when I say "at least 550" its my subjective opinion. You can browse this board and read other people's opinions. There are A LOT of topics about it Good luck!

Verbal is definetely too low, even for an international student. I think it must be at least 550. At least. However, I know more about standards for PhD applications. May be for Master's degrees 400 is enough...

what constitutes bragging?
Strangefox replied to db2290's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
I would mention the fact about "the highest possible classification" only in passing and focus more on what the project was about. It's only my humble opinion, though I would leave only the very first sentence of this paragraph. -
Let's say I was in contact with a professor and told him/her about my research project. And he/she replied: "Your project is cool". Or even: "I encourage you to apply to this program". Needless to say I want to mention that in my SOP But should I inform the professor that I want to do it? On the one hand, such action seems superfluous. On the other hand, may be it's more polite to do it like that? May be there are some rules I am not aware of?.. What is your opinion?

Is my GRE score good or not?(I am an international student)
Strangefox replied to centurysun's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
I believe it's good. -
It's better to guess. Blanks are worse than wrong answers.

Ok, I called the testing center today and they told me that there is a building and the testing center is A PART of the building. So lockers are outside the center and I can leave my cell phone there. What a relief!
-
I am going to take the test really soon and I started to reread section On Test Day of the official website. And it says "Do not bring cell phones <...> into the test center. If you do, you will be dismissed from the test, your test fees will be forfeited and your scores will be canceled." My question is, if I bring it and put it into a locker - is it against the rules or something? To take the test I will have to go to another city and I just cannot leave my cell phone at home! Thanks!

370V is too little even for an international student. I would retake it.

Hi! The official site says: "In each edition of the General Test, there are three or more reading comprehension passages" and this "more" is making me nervous... What is the maximum? Four? Five? I hope that more passages means that each one will be not very long so that the total number of lines in all editions is more or less the same. Thanks!
-
Well, I heard different opinions about it. I wonder why the official GRE website does not say anything about sending essays to all universities...
-
Are you sure?

Thanks!

From the Official Website: What to Bring to a Computer-based Test Administration official identificationnames of schools where you would like to send your scoresauthorization voucher, if applicableSo what is this authorization voucher? May be it's applicable to me and I don't know that?? Well, I guess it is not, because the official site also says "If you requested and received an authorization voucher from ETS, you must take it with you to the test center." And I have not requested anything like that. I guess... Have somebody requested this voucher and can this person tell me what is it for and how does it look like?? Sorry, I have already asked about on-site registration procedures on this board and I was already told that I need only my ID (I'll have a passport) and a confirmation number. And it seems I am asking about the same thing (kind of) again! But it is my worst nightmare - to arrive to the testing site and to find out that I missed something about what to bring with me to be admitted to take the test!!!!!!! Please, help me out here!

A question about the quantitive section of GRE
Strangefox replied to Strangefox's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Thanks! I have already done these questions and others in the official GRE book on quant section and I have not seen there questions with superfluos information (except graphs and tables, of course). But in some other prep materials I came across such questions. I mean, for instance, a question about a car that goes at some speed, spends this and that time in the road blablabla and then I need to tell the distance, but there is some extra info saying that something is 25% of something and the wording is so tricky that I have to spend a lot of time trying to understand where to put this info about percents and then I realize that I don't need it at all!! This kind of questions So you saw something like that on actual GRE? -
Hi! In a quantitive section is all information in a problem always necessary to solve it? I mean, should I look out for tricky problems that offer extra data (speed, time, weight, whatever) that I do not actually need to get the answer? Thanks!

Look what I've found! "Do you intend to take GRE (Graduate Record Examination) test? If yes then you may know the verbal section of GRE. You must have a large vocabulary in order to get a high score on verbal section. And you may also know the famous Barron wordlist. Study this wordlist thoroughly and you may be confident to take the real test. This software is intended to help you learn Barron wordlist on your mobile phone. Study anytime, anywhere with your phone! Features: - Barron wordlist with approximately 4800 words. - Specify word range to study. For example, you may only want to study from word number 150 to 250. - Random mode for checking your memory. - Phonetic transcription included. - Show/hide explanation. Explore yourself!" You just copy it on your mobile phone and open the file. I tried it and it works pefectly well. What exactly happens at a GRE testing site?

I guess you are right! Thank you very much for your explanations!!! -
What exactly happens at a GRE testing site?
Strangefox replied to Strangefox's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
And what tests were other people taking? So they gave you all instructions outside the lab and then they let you go inside and start the test? Did they go with you to a computer and pressed some button to make the test begin? It's very much different from what I expected. I thought everybody starts the test simulteneously... -
What exactly happens at a GRE testing site?
Strangefox replied to Strangefox's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Does it mean that everybody else started at the same time as you did? Or there were examinees who were ushered into the testing room while you were already working on your AW task? -

Thanks! A locker would be good -
Hi! I have several questions about GRE: 1 - REGISTRATION: They write not to come less then half an hour before the start of the test. Should I come one hour in advance? How does the on-site registration happen? I need to have my ID with me (with the exact name that I used registering on-line, photo and signature) + some printed out confirmation, right? Then I will have to fill in some form, as far as I know. I guess it will be about not telling anyone about questions from the exam. When do they let you into the room where the test takes place? Do they give you some instructions before you start? 2 - BREAK: Ok, there is this one 10-minute break between analytical writing and everyting else and I guess I will want to use it Do I need to raise my hand and call whoever is in charge in the room in order to go out? Or can I - as soon as I see this inscription on the screen telling me that now I may have a break or procede - just get up and go out of the room all by myself? I read that I need to show my ID document each time I leave or enter the testing room. Is it so? 3 - YOUR STUFF: I also read that examinees have to leave their bags in a special place at the testing site and that you should not leave any valuable things there. Is it true? So I should not bring my cell phone, for instrance? (That is not very convenient...) Thanks!

Quant Score 700, is it low for Biomedical engineering PhD?
Strangefox replied to bme2011's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Well, I am not from engineering but from what I have read about GRE so far (and I've read a lot ) I would say that your score is quite good. Don't worry and write your SOPs Good luck! -
