  1. FYI everyone - there is a very active Discord server for applicants to clinical & counselling psychology programs across North America! I made lots of friends in this server and it was so helpful to me when applying last year. There's plenty of Canadian applicants in here too, as well as a whole channel dedicated to Canada-specific discussions and questions. Definitely recommend joining!

Just checking in - is anyone else still on the alternate list, and still checking every day? I am convinced it won't be updated until the last possible day at the last possible minute... Lol.

I'm still an alternate at U of C but have assumed I won't be getting it. I won the AGES scholarship instead, which is less money but still very substantial, so I'm no longer upset about not getting SSHRC this year!

Hello! I'm a first time applicant, and an international student. I'm so excited to see this thread, because I have questions about the "unwritten rules" of applying & was wondering if anyone here could share their experiences with what some expectations are when you're applying to research-based MA Counselling programs (with an intention to continue to a PhD)? I'm not fully done shortlisting yet but I know for sure I'll be applying to McGill, the OISE clinical+counselling program and Calgary. Most of them say that it isn't necessary to contact faculty before applying for an MA - is this true? Also, I haven't found much official information about interviews - are those usually part of an MA process?

Some people may disagree with me, but I would say overall the contacting faculty thing is true, contrary to popular belief. Most of the time, when I contacted faculty last year, they simply gave me a generic "your interests are a good fit with mine, yes I am taking students" response; most of them did not offer to meet ahead of time or anything. Furthermore, I didn't even bother contacting my POI at OISE when I applied because I assumed they must get so many inquiries and that I was surely not going to get in anyways... yet I got an interview!

Maybe contact your absolute top choices, especially if you have something unique to say to them (for example, a blog post that my current POI wrote really resonated with me, and so I made sure to tell them that when inquiring about supervision - I think my personal connection to their work helped me stand out a bit!). But if you're crunched for time and just want to toss the application in, I wouldn't worry about contacting POI's in advance as long as you've strongly presented your case for why they are a good supervision fit in your SOP.

Thanks! I think this is only available to those that were previous UofT students. I didn’t do my undergrad at UofT so I think that’s why I don’t have access to acorn. Hopefully SGS will be updated soon!!

Nah, I did not go to U of T and I was able to make an ACORN account! It was kinda convoluted but I did it - just google ACORN U of T and find the instructions :)

On April 1st I was placed on the alternate list for SSHRC at McGill and today I was notified by email saying that my CGS-M application has cleared the alternate list and I was awarded SSHRC :)

Hope this helps others who are also alternates! Best wishes!

    Wow, that was fast!! Congrats!!

Where are you seeing 500+ applicants? The only schools I can find that publish their application figures are UofC and UBC and both go nowhere near that high.  I know that SFU said last year was exceptional for them and they had 323 applications then, but that was with the pandemic.

I mean, I applied to the CCP program so grain of salt, but my POI I interviewed with for that program said 300 or so applications is low for OISE's programs. So this figure was probably thrown out by some profs during interviews and has been re-circulated around here for a while. U of T is the top university in Canada so they attract lots of applicants from across the country - other universities I find tend to attract mostly in-province students but I could be wrong!

I was interviewed for McMaster on Feb. 14. Truly thought my interview went SO WELL. Received an official rejection email 3 minutes ago. Wishing there was something I regretted about my interview because I honestly thought that it went so so well. Pretty disappointed.

Don't beat yourself up over it! Like the other person said, it's such a competitive process that it could have literally been anything. My mom had an amazing analogy - it's like a millisecond difference between first and second place in the Olympics. Everyone who competes in that match is obviously skilled and qualified, but the gold medal winner wins by milliseconds/fractions of a score/a few more points and the reasons could be plenty. If you feel you did well, I am sure you did - you got an interview for a reason, after all!

Just wanted to let people know that I originally accepted my U of L offer but recently declined it. I got off the waitlist for my number one choice! So, there should be a spot that opened for U ofL.

If you decline after the deadline, do students on the waitlist still get offered spots? I know the deadline for U of L was a while ago so I'm unsure how U of L approaches this. Perhaps you lose your deposit and that's it?

Also - I saw you're headed to U of C now! I'm going to the M.Sc in Counselling Psych program there, see you around hahaha :)

    Ohhhh wow only 10?

That’s true, I think also for UofT’s reputation people WILL withdraw their confirmation from another school..

    Here’s to waiting!!

Meh, if I get in I likely won't be accepting, I got in to my top choice elsewhere and Toronto is so expensive and far from my family! Yeah reputation is cool and all but it's not really that important when it comes to our end goal, which is getting our credentials and registering as a psychologist.

  10. Good morning y'all!

I have been offered SSHRC at U of A, but I will not be attending so I will be declining. Hopes this helps someone :)

I am currently alternate listed at U of C which is where I will be going, so if anyone is going to decline their SSHRC there I would love to know!

Also, has anyone gone about emailing the institution to learn their rank on the alternate list?

I am wondering if there are any chances of getting in after being waitlisted? Just wondering if people could share any experiences or insight.

I got in to my top choice after being waitlisted :) my school's waitlist was by POI, not by rank, and both students my POI accepted declined, so it went to me!

Just got the email saying the status of my application changed for UofT, and also had a friend at UofT who had the status of their application updated a week ago. Not sure if the timing of these updates is an indication of anything..

Yeah, I saw on the U of C grad discord that many students got theirs a day or two before my status changed. It also doesn't seem to be department-dependent.

Also wondering this. I received the email saying an update had been made to my file and when I checked the portal, I could see it was from University of Ottawa because the date had been updated next to that school. However the other 2 schools were still showing a December date, so i know they have not updated my file yet. Guess I'll just wait for April 1st to see if the other schools update the file as well.

Last year when I applied, 1 of my schools updated it on March 30 and the other 2 updated it on March 31 hahaha. Also, for what it's worth, I haven't received any such emails updating me on a status change yet. :)

I probably shouldn't think too much about this since it doesn't really help, but is the "early" status update mean anything? I'm received the generic email "The status of your application has changed. As of April 1, consult the Application Overview page.." around last week. I know the email means the school have made a decision on your application. This is my first time applying and I just want to get this out of my mind by writing it here.

I'm not sure, I wouldn't think so but I could be wrong?

Is it typical for students who get rejected from a school they listed as their three schools on the CGS-M portal, but still get the CGS-M award for that school? How common is this? I've heard that there is no connection between the people who selects students for the program vs. the people who selects students or CGS-M.

Last year I was alternate listed at a school I didn't even interview at, so it certainly could happen. Fortunately this year I got in to one of the schools I listed. Like the other person said, if you get it at a school you did not get admitted to but would still like to attend, contact them and discuss what your options might be.

Is it normal to not hear anything from the department by now? Or is this school / department specific?

Normal :) I havent heard anything and last year I didn't hear anything until literally March 31

    Hey guys!

I just received an automated email re: CGS-M saying "The status of your application has changed. As of April 1, consult the Application Overview page in the Research Portal to view the results." Did anyone else get this? Hate that I know there's a decision and can't check it until the 1st!!

That means a school has uploaded a decision on your application! I got those emails last year right at the end of March. I think every school is different in terms of timeline for uploading but all of us should be receiving emails like that over the next little while.
