Have you considered using superscripts and footers for this? What I might do in this case is use superscript numbers in the text. In your footer, list the superscript number and a note next to it (e.g., full name is ___ / refers to / whatever you chose to label it). Sometimes you’ll see this done in articles. CPA also uses this type of referencing in some of their articles. Superscript references are also acceptable in SSHRC proposals too, which can save you a lot of space.

This is super handy!! Thanks so much, I did that for my SSHRC proposal the first time I applied too but I never considered it for my SOI as well :)

I'd say fine to use abbreviations for the really common test you've mentioned. Otherwise it eats up too much precious word count! If that's still too much detail, you could group them generally by saying "widely-used/common psycho-educational" or "psychodiagnostic" tests.

Thank you! I know it's grammatically correct to spell out all acronyms the first time, but it just seems so unlikely that people in psychology would not know what the WAIS and MMPI are.

  3. I have an SOI question. I want to discuss my practical experience, which includes my background in assessment. I want to provide examples of some particularly well-known tests that I know how to administer, particularly the MMPI and WAIS. Because the full names of them are so long, when I type them out they look so clunky and take up so much room. Do y'all think it would be safe to assume the people reading my statement would know what those tests are as they're quite well-recognized amongst clinicians? I know the answer is to not assume this but I'm just wondering for the sake of keeping things brief if that would be okay.

    Hello there :)

Your positive attitude really made me smile. It's great that you're ready to hit the ground running this year.

To answer your question - where there weren't specific formatting/ length instructions, I did use single spacing. It does help with adding more info to your SOIs, I know how difficult it is sometimes to include all the things you'd like to talk about in there. Incidentally, my worst nightmare last year was a program that only allotted 500 words - I realize it's not too bad, but it was difficult to trim down everything and still have it make sense.

That said, I would advise against adding too much detail on things they can get from other parts of your application, such as your CV. More words doesn't always equal a stronger SOI.

    Best of luck!

Thank you!<3 humour and looking on the bright side is how I cope with disappointment haha. And thank you, my SOI last year that allowed 3 pages was my strongest one and I got an interview from it, and it's because I had more freedom to to kind of "inject myself" into it with the way I phrased certain things, transitioned to other topics, etc. Not that I was making it really fluffy and unprofessional, but I just mean that it flowed a lot nicer and truly told the story of me, if that makes sense, as opposed to me just briefly stating things and providing shallow explanations/merely restating what's on my CV in a fancy way. Thanks so much for this! :)

  5. What's good everyone!! After being rejected by all 6 programs I applied to last year, your girl is ready to give it another go this year!

I have a question about SOI's. If there were no specific requirements for the SOI aside from length, did/would you guys use single-spaced type? On all my SOI's I used 1.5 and in hindsight, if single-spacing or 1.15 spacing is okay, I sure wasted a lot of space that I could have used to make my SOI's much stronger!

Hi all! I was just wondering if anyone knows of any profs doing research focusing on child/adolescent mental health who may be accepting volunteer RA's from other universities? I don't have any opportunities in my current city, so I'm hoping I can find a lab that I can volunteer with online! Thanks :)

What specifically are you looking to research? I volunteered with a lab at my university in first year that did longitudinal research on the impacts of things like SES, cultural adjustment, parental involvement, etc on child internalizing and externalizing problems, and I believe there's more in our Ed Psych department in similar areas! You can PM me if interested :) though I don't know if they're doing remote research opportunities, it's still worth asking!

So happy to see folks getting alternates and offers! I was rejected by all 3 of the schools, so I need to go back to the drawing table with my proposals and craft a better application.

You also got to consider that, just like grad programs themselves, CGSM also received an unprecedented amount of applications this year. Your proposal may have been still very good - it was just the pool you applied to. Plus, CGSM looks at you holistically (GPA, past research experience, even community service!), so that's something to look at too. Overall, it could never hurt to try and make your proposal stronger, but it could have been so many other things too so try not to beat yourself up over the quality of your proposal. :)

This was me last year! I was rejected across the board and the fact that I was an alternate for SSHRC for 2 of the 3 schools I applied to really gave me hope! haha I was eventually offered SSHRC from the alternate list but it unfortunately didn't change the fact that the school still didn't accept me.

Sweet, well I will keep checking if I eventually get the SSHRC because then that way I can put it on my CV! I've been talking to some profs and they said it's usually not really a thing to put "alternate" awards on CV's, only if you've actually been offered the award and then declined it.

Also, question for everyone: even if I eventually get the SSHRC, how late is too late to inquire about possibly being squeezed into the program? Even if it comes over the summer or so, should I still email and ask? Obviously I'm not holding out hope and am currently just looking for jobs instead but if there would still be a chance I definitely want to take it lol.

I was thinking about this as well. Half of me thinks, if you were shortlisted for a conference award or something, I would put that on my CV even if I didn't win. The other half of me thinks if I was waitlisted into a PhD program but ultimately didn't make it, I wouldn't put that on my cv... So I'm not sure! I guess if you're early in your research career and don't have a long CV it would probably be helpful, but if you have more impressive things on your CV (have won other scholarships, have publications etc) it might look weak in comparison.

I think this would be more equivalent to the conference award situation than the program though, because CGSM is an award! So maybe it would be acceptable, especially early on in your research career :) they always say the rich get richer, so perhaps mentioning you were on an alternate list for CGSM would make you more favourable for future CGSMs in the future

    I'm in the same boat!

I'm taking it as a good sign that out of however many applications they reviewed ours were competitive enough to be in the running. I'm not convinced it will help me get into the program even if I do get an offer later, as I wasn't interviewed by that school, but after a loooong and depressing process it's nice to have something positive to hold on to haha!

Literally my exact thoughts. I'm super thrilled because so far it's been nothing but rejections, "no's", and bad news, so I am absolutely over the moon that one school at least waitlisted me for SSHRC and thought my proposal was strong LOL. I'm gonna celebrate this, even though everyone I've told so far has been like "you're waitlisted? congrats I guess?" hahahahaha

  11. Sorry to spam the forum but do you guys think an alternate offer is something we could list on our CV's? Because the school technically considered the application CGSM-worthy, it just fell below the allocation cutoff? Like they could have just outright declined the proposal instead but they didn't. Or is that reaching? Lol

I actually had a question regarding about CGSM. With actual grad schools often sending admissions decision before CGSM decisions are out, are there actually instances where a person might get awarded a CGSM scholarship but received a rejection earlier from those 3 schools anyway? What happens then?

I kind of thought that the CGSM reviewers for those schools would know if you were accepted or not beforehand, so being rejected in those 3 schools prior would factor in to their decisions for awarding the scholarships. It just didn't make sense to me to award you with a scholarship if the school rejected you in the first place.

Disclaimer: I am like 95% sure about all this, if someone sees this and I am wrong with something please correct me ASAP lol

To my understanding, the people who award CGSM's and the people who evaluate grad school applications are separate and don't influence each other. The CGSM people give awards solely based on what is included in each application, regardless of whether or not that person was accepted to the school. So it is entirely possible students don't get in to the program yet still get offered the award; however, if the student is unable to attend the program, they obviously cannot accept the award because you need to be enrolled the graduate program that awarded the money to take it.

Apparently, there have been many instances where a student would get a CGSM at a school after not getting in and then being squeezed in after the fact if they got CGSM. I'm presuming this is because programs have such a limited amount of spots because there's only so much funding they can give, so if a student is coming in with their own funding, then that relieves the pressure of the department to find funding for that student - so if the student is otherwise a very strong applicant, they may be let in.

IMO it's so weird that grad school decisions are made before the CGSM results are out, I feel like it would save everyone so much time if decisions were made after CGSM results are released. That way, whether or not the student actually has funding would be factored into the decision, and grad schools wouldn't have to deal with rejected students who have nonetheless gotten CGSM contacting them to inquire about being squeezed in to the program after the fact.

Do all schools have to update the CGSM portal by April 1st? Or is that the date at which they can start updating students (assuming you are eligible for an award)?

I'm assuming that's the date you can first begin viewing awards. One of the schools I listed still hasn't posted results so my guess is that results for some schools might come in after April 1 depending on how backlogged they are.

I have heard of this and I encourage anyone who receives CGS-M to contact the program if you were previously rejected from the admission committee. I've personally heard of a few cases where they did end up taking the applicant.

    Good luck! :)

Welp, I was indifferent about CGS-M given that I didn't get in anywhere but now I have an ever-so-small glimmer of hope ?

So, I double checked the portal again, and the date I saw when first entered was indeed my submission date. However, when I clicked to open the application file, I saw the new date. It's entered as March 30th, 2021. I suspect you should see this there too. I attached a screenshot of what I see/what it should look like.

    Application Status.png

Yes, it does look like that for me, interestingly enough only for one of the three schools I listed! I mean, I didn't get into any of them, so it doesn't really matter ? would still be neat to see the results though

Edit: oh okay I just got another notification so I guess the schools just upload results at their own paces. I guess this also means some results may not be available right away on the 1st depending on if the school posted the results yet or not.

It isn't necessarily good or bad! It simply means that the school has yet to enter a decision for your CGS-M application. Once a decision is made and entered into your CGS-M research portal you will received an e-mail that your application status has changed and that you will be able to view the decision on April 1st. Also the date will change from the date you submitted your app to the date when the decision was made. The only exception to this is if your application was deemed ineligible, in which case you will be able to see that decision right away. If interested in reading more about it you can check out this link (specifically under the heading "Competition Results Mid-March - April 1st":

    I hope that helps!

I just got that email a few moments ago and my status still is the date I submitted the application. But I don't think it was deemed ineligible because it would have said that too... this is so odd haha

    Hi there, good question!

I think an ineligible status at this point means either that you turned town an admission offer from that school or that you were not offered admission to that school. This is just because admission at the school is a requirement to hold an award there, and some schools seem to update that before the official results from CGS-M come out! I saw the same ineligible status with McMaster after I turned down an offer.

    Hope this helps!

I believe you can still technically win a CGS-M even if you were rejected from that school. Program admissions and CGS-M awards are decided independently. I've heard of cases where people got a CGS-M for a school they were not admitted in to!

  18. So I am thinking about cold-emailing profs for research opportunities for this upcoming year and I am wanting to check in with one, however they mentioned to me earlier when I was inquiring about graduate student supervision that they will be on sabbatical in 2021. Is it worth maybe just briefly following up anyways to see if they might have something, or know of someone who does? Again, this is just for RA work/volunteering, not for graduate student supervision in 2021. :)

Oh so I woke up super early at 6am MT just to check results (2 yrs ago now?). The portal crashed in the morning LOL given too many users were trying to logon so I went back to sleep and was able to check/log on in the afternoon haha. So not sure waking up early to check results is helpful haha

HAHAHA good to know, I def won't be waking up at 6 then ? I usually check my email every day at around 8 AM MDT so I was wondering if they'd be posted by then.

Official results for CGS-M are released on April 1.

Was just about to come here to ask - anyone know if they're released at a specific time on April 1? Like midnight EDT or something? Lol it's not that important I was just wondering if I shouldn't be surprised if I check that morning and they're not posted.
