  1. Too bored at work so thought of this post lol, but I do hope this to be helpful for people who have a different background. Undergrad Institution: Canada Top 4 or 5 maybe Major(s): Biochemistry Minor(s): Statistics GPA: cGPA 11.1/12 math/stat-related 11.6/12 Type of Student: Domestic Female Asian GRE General Test: Q: waived V: waived W: waived GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: M: waived TOEFL Score: waived Programs Applying: Biostatistics MS Research Experience: - A bioinformatics thesis project (a year plus volunteered at the lab during summer, no pub, conference talk cancelled due to COVID) Awards/Honors/Recognitions: - Entrance scholarship Pertinent Activities or Jobs: - Introductory math course grading TA for one term (after submitting the applications, did mention in waterloo app tho) Letters of Recommendation: thesis supervisor, program coordinator (lab course instructor), linear reg professor Math/Statistics Grades: Intro to programming (python) - A- Linear algebra - A Calculus 1-3 - A+ Intro to modelling - A+ Intro statistics - A+ Intro prob - A+ Regression analysis - A+ Math stats - A- Time series - A+ Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: - got the SAS base/advance certificates Applying to Where: Canadian Biostatistics MS only UBC - Statistics MS (biostat concentration) / Rejected Waterloo - Biostatistics MS / Accepted (Attending) McMaster - Statistics MS / Pending on Jun 3rd 2021 Western - Epidemiology and Biostatistics MS (Biostatistics stream) / Rejected Queens - Biostatistics MS / Accepted U of T - Biostatistics MS / Accepted
  2. You are right. I’m interested in the co-op just because it’s also research-focused so the research experience would also benefit me to apply for PhD programs. But I guess in terms of the preparation for a PhD, there is no much difference between the two programs.
  3. Hi guys, I am a bio major student who got accepted at Waterloo and UofT for MS in biostatistics. I can't decided between the two programs and I am seeking some advice. I want to apply for PhD programs after graduate and go to pharm companies as a biostatistician later ideally. Waterloo Biostat MS Pros: - Offer TAship to cover the tuition and part of the living expenses - Under math faculty and the courses are harder (theoretical), which I thought it would be great for me to build a solid math foundation and for going to PhD - Students need to work with a supervisor for the research project in the last semester (4 months) Cons: - They have Co-op positions but its not guaranteed while I don't have much experience - Again the courses are hard and I'm concerned that if I can't keep up then I'm screwed (I took cal1-3, lin alg1, math stat, reg analysis, taking time series, and plan to take lin alg2) UofT Biostat MS Pros: - They have a practicum course which allows students to work in hospitals/research institutes every week, so more practical experiences - Under public health department, the courses are more applied and I might like it and perform better (maybe) - There is a thesis option (12 month) after the first year of courses Cons: - No guaranteed financial aids, I can try to look for TA positions though - Not sure how competitive is for transferring to thesis option and Phd program? Thank you so much in advance for your valuable input!
  4. Thanks for the input! I don’t really know about the schools for the program a lot. I’m just more familiar with U of T and like the campus and city in general as I’ve been living near Toronto. I’m also not sure about my competitiveness because of the background.
  5. Hi, I'm a fifth-year undergraduate major in Biochemistry and going to apply for biostatistics masters in Canada. I stayed for one extra year to fill in the course requirement but I'm not sure if my curriculum is enough as I'm aware that many students with math/stats background are also applying. I would also like to get some advice on my applying school list. U of T would be the top 1 school I want to go, would my chances be high? Thank you in advance! Undergrad Institution: McMaster University Major(s): Biochemistry Minor(s): Statistics GPA: 11.1/12 (5 years) 11.4/12 (last year with most of the stats/math courses) (not sure about the 4.0 scale sorry!) Type of Student: Domestic Asian Female GRE General Test: Waived Relevant Courses : - Calculus I, II, II (all A+) - Intro to probability (A+) - Intro to statistics (A+) - Statistical methods & application (A+) - Linear algebra I (A) - Applied regression analysis with SAS (ongoing, possibly A+) - Mathematical statistics (ongoing, possibly A) - Intro to modelling (ongoing, possibly A) - Time series (Next term) Programs Applying: MS Biostat or MS Stat with concentration in biostat Research Experience: A bioinformatics thesis involving some statistical learning methods. No publications. Programming Languages: SAS, Python, R, UNIX Letters of Recommendation: - Thesis supervisor - Program coordinator - Instructor of the regression analysis course (Postdoctoral fellow) School applied: - University of Toronto (MS Biostat)) - University of British Columbia (MS Statistics with concentration in biostatistics) - University of Waterloo (MMath in biostatistics) - Queen's University (MS Biostat) - Western University (MS Biostat) - McMaster University (MS statistics coursework)
