  1. Accepted into Northwestern's Music Theory & Cognition PhD program today!! Thrilled beyond belief! They have a fantastic program with a very generous funding package. So incredibly humbled and grateful.
  2. Has anyone heard anything from Eastman? I had my theory interview over three weeks ago on Jan. 21 (and it sounds like musicology interviews were the same day) but haven't heard a word since then.
  3. Huge congrats on Cornell!! I was rejected from Harvard as well, but did get into Indiana last week. Still waiting to hear from CUNY, Princeton, Columbia, and Yale.
  4. I really hope you get in! Do you mind sharing what your specialism is? I applied to their music theory program and haven't heard a word...
  5. Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I think it usually takes longer for music theory as well. Looking at previous years' results, it seems that Harvard hasn't even consistently done interviews every year...
  6. Thanks so much for the helpful info! I still haven't heard anything from Yale, but who knows what next week will bring. Still haven't heard anything from Harvard - have you? I see someone received a composition acceptance today, though, so maybe the musicology and theory programs had more applications to review/are sending interview invitations out later than composition?
  7. Thank you!! I'm really shocked with how many interview invites I've received -- I certainly did not expect this outcome. Huge congrats on your Yale interview!! That's a fantastic school. Do you know if they sent out all of their interview invites today (including theory)? I saw someone post an interview invite for Yale's theory program on the results page, but haven't heard a word from them. Still waiting to hear back from Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Chicago, and Princeton...
  8. I recently received my first acceptance into WashU's music theory PhD program! My Indiana interview is this weekend, CUNY interview is next week, and Northwestern interview is the following week. This will be a crazy month for sure!
  9. Oh wow, have you been in contact with someone from the department? Also huge congrats on your Stony Brook acceptance and fellowship nomination!!
  10. Has anyone heard anything from Harvard yet (theory, musicology, or ethnomusicology)? It seems that in previous years they have typically sent out interview invites by now...
  11. I'm really shocked about that, too! I received an interview invite from Washington University in St. Louis on Wednesday, and had my Eastman interview yesterday, but haven't heard from any other schools this week. Fingers crossed we hear something within the next week...
  12. So nice to finally meet another PhD Theory applicant! Those are all great schools. Have you heard from any of them yet?
  13. Haha, no problem at all! But yeah I was super shocked by that too?? I guess any day at any time is fair game for hearing from these schools, lol. Also, I've been wondering if some schools update their online portals without sending email notifications? If so, I need to start checking my portals regularly because I haven't been doing that?
  14. @QueerTrumpeterYeah, I expected the same for Harvard given its super recent deadline but it seems like historically they review applications very quickly. Haha, I'd love to wake up to some news tomorrow, too! I'm not sure if they send out decisions on MLK day or not, but I received an interview invite from Florida State on New Year's Eve, so it might be possible? And nope, I haven't heard from UChicago yet. Based on results from previous years, it looks like they don't do interviews and release decisions by late January/early February each year.
  15. Wow, your research interests sound absolutely fascinating! Those are all great schools. Congrats on the interviews!! I'm a music theory PhD applicant, but I also applied to Eastman, Harvard, and UChicago. Have you heard anything from Harvard? Based on results from previous years, it seems like Harvard typically sends out interview invites around this time every year for all of their music PhD programs, but I haven't heard anything from them yet. I did see that someone got a composition interview invite yesterday, though.
  16. Hi everybody! I'm a music theory MA/PhD applicant. Not quite the same as composition, but I'm also applying to UMich! Where else are you all applying? I've received interview invites from three schools so far: Eastman, Indiana, and Florida State. And yes, unfortunately I definitely think COVID will impact admissions, especially since several programs didn't accept new students last year (likely making the competition even more stiff this year).
  17. Hello, everyone! Just wanted to start this page for those applying to any type of graduate program in music (MA, MM, PhD, or DMA) for the upcoming application cycle.
  18. Hi everyone! I'm a rising senior at a pretty prestigious LAC, and am planning on applying to about ten PhD programs in music theory this fall. I'm pursuing a BM in Music Education/Piano Performance and a BA in Psychology, and my main area of interest for research is music cognition. Grade-wise, I have a 4.0 GPA for each of my majors and a 3.99 GPA overall. I took an independent study last fall with a music theory professor where I wrote two short (~20-page) papers to serve as writing samples for graduate school, and I'm currently in the process of writing my senior honors thesis which I hope can also be a writing sample (but only for the programs that allow you to submit an entire thesis). My GRE scores are 160V, 150Q, and 4.5AW (not great, I know, but I'm hoping my GPA carries more weight than these scores, and several of the places on my list do not require GRE scores). I now have my entire thesis committee finalized, so I'm hoping that my advisor and readers will all agree to write letters of recommendation for me. Here is my current list of schools: Eastman, Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Northwestern, CUNY, Chicago, Michigan, WUSTL Can anyone give me any feedback on what my odds are of getting in at least one of these programs? I know that I'm applying to all fully-funded PhD programs, but I've had to pay for undergrad completely out of pocket with no scholarships (and no real financial aid at all, besides loans), so it's really important that grad school does not cost any additional money (I'm still up to my neck in loans for undergrad). Thanks in advance!

  20. Thanks so much for the insights! When you say writing score do you mean the AW score (i.e., the two essays that are graded from 1-6) or the verbal section (i.e., the vocab/reading comprehension multiple choice section)?
  21. I’m looking at several top music theory PhD programs (Eastman, Yale, Columbia, Harvard, Northwestern...just to name a few) and was wondering how heavily GRE scores are weighed for applicants. My current scores are 160V, 150Q, and 4.5A, so my quant score is low, but I’ve heard that humanities programs generally only care about verbal and writing scores. I’ve considered retaking it to boost my quant score, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the time and money. Additionally, I have a 3.99 GPA at my undergrad institution, so I’m wondering if this might be able to offset my lower quant score. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
