  1. One of the reasons I didn't apply to BU was due to the funding thingy. I was discouraged browsing their department website where they kind of strongly state that they want their PhD students to work their butt off and always be scared of losing funding. Florida also does that btw. They explicitly state the funding is not guaranteed but a student should expect to receive funding if they're enrolled in X amount of courses etc etc. Anyhow, am I the only one in this board who hasn't heard anything from Maryland yet?
  2. I'm beginning to think whether this is a trend of higher number of applications this year everywhere or just a Brown thing? Going by application numbers one wouldn't guess they are Top 50 department (but more like Top 25 in Comparative).
  3. I claim the Brown rejection. Couldn't stand it and e-mailed the DGS. Got a swift response. She said almost 300 applications this year. I think that's significantly more than they what they usually get but I'm not surprised since they are a department on the rise and there's the Ivy factor.
  4. Anyone knows what's up with Brown? They're running late this year although I expect them to come out this week. Edit: okay, I see one acceptance up in the results page.
  5. Perhaps. But several people in the forum haven't heard anything yet despite rejections being already given out and Maryland going by previous years do not notify their waitlisted applicants on their own (you have to personally ask) until there's a final admit/reject decision.
  6. From previous years it seems they send out rolling acceptances i February and early March before a round of rejections in March and then they admit people off the wait list. Maybe someone already offered by Maryland has the inside track for this year?
  7. Nope. I saw two rejections posted on the results page. Both were informed through email to check the website early this morning. In the last few years Maryland rejections went out around mid-March.
  8. Is there anyone here who did not get the Maryland rejection e-mail?
  9. Another Penn reject coming through. I am a good fit with their comparative faulty but my advisor was right. Penn is a crapshoot.
  10. Slow day. Where are them rejections from UPenn? i don't see any waitlist posts up yet so they are pending.
  11. I would wait 3 more hours. If no email, then i'm rejected or, less probable, in the waitlist. if an waitlist is posted in the wiki by today and still no email, then rejected, otherwise i'll just wait till 02/28 for the waitlist notifications going by previous trends. An UPenn rejection would be a shame as it's a great research fit for me but then again it won't surprise me. My advisor wasn't very encouraging about UPenn. Apparently they have a quota system on admits based on field i.e. they will take only 2 or 3 people on comparative giving offers to about 6 applicants out of, i believe, 60+ comparative applicants. It's a crapshoot.
  12. I concur, explodingstressball. What humanpovince is saying regarding South Asianists is true if one considers non-PhD granting departments in the equation.
  13. As an Indianist (although my interests geographically are broader so I like 'South Asianist' more) who's not interested in Indian political economy (primarily) I hope i'll join the ranks of Indianist faculty someday. Ashutosh Varshney is a prominent Indianist at Brown. So is Devesh Kapur and Francine Frankel at UPenn. There's Echeverri-Gent at UVA and Sinha at Wisconsin. There are other Indianists around but not as hotly discussed in online forums at UCSB, Illinois, WashU St. Louis, UT-Austin, Cornell, UMass Amherst etc. etc. Also, as noted above, I expect a higher demand for China specialists and South Asianists in the near future. Good for the likes of me I guess.
  14. Anyone knows what's up with UMass Amherst? They gave out few acceptances early this month, earlier than they usually did in previous years. But then, their acceptances are spread out through February and March.
  15. I'm currently at a PoliSci MA program at a east coast Big East school after a year in a Sociology PhD program in a big ACC state school which I left after tangential research interests with the faculty. Applying to a broad range of schools from Top 15 to non-Top 50 ranked ones. Already 4 rejections from the top ranked choices (Penn State, Wisconsin, UVA, WashU).
  16. I was accepted at Claremont 2 years back but declined the offer as their funding sucks; they gave 25% tuition remission and no stipend for 1st year and a RA from 2nd year and full tuition remission but I had no money to pay the tuition costs as an international student from a developing nation (which is why I didn't apply this time although my fit with the department is simply the best of any school). It seems very few, if anyone at all, get 100% funding i.e. stipend + full tuition waiver. Although things improve from 2nd year in the program, I'm told. I hope you get the maximum funding they offer.
  17. I emailed DGS Dr. Morris few days back after seeing few Maryland acceptances on the results page. No reply yet so I think my chances are slim. Do you think they are done, JPhoenix?
  18. Thanks, Count. I'm saying to myself the rejections were all from my 'target' schools. It's kind of a payback as I was in a different UVA phd program that I ditched after 1 year for a Political Science MA. I was really hoping to get back to c-ville, though. Great town.
  19. I'm putting my hoping on UMD and GSU too,JPhoneix.
  20. UVA is supposed to give out their 1st round of acceptances this week. The poster mentioned it was an 'informal' notification, probably to an impatient email from the poster. It might was well be fake but i'm inclined to believe it. By the way, does anyone have any idea about Penn State? There were a few acceptances in the 1st week of this month. Then zilch.
  21. I am declining offers from Purdue and Claremont Graduate. I'm wait-listed for RA-ship in Marquette, Northeastern and Villanova's MA program in Political Science.

    Philadelphia, PA

Hey guys, I'm an international student and I'm leaning towards joining the Political Science MA program at Villanova. I have no idea how the area is. I'm told most students live in the Bryn Mawr and Ardmore area. I see the discussion here is centred around UPenn and Temple students, nevertheless, could any one of you good souls provide some information on the housing rent, safety and transportation situation there and any other information that you might deem helpful?
  23. I'm going to turn down the offers from phd programs. I'm now at a limbo amongst 3 MA programs i got into, Northeastern (funding decision not yet made), Marquette (wait listed for tuition scholarship and a $6600 1/2 RA) and Villanova (full tuition scholarship and at the top of waitlist for a $12k for 9 months TA/RA). What do you guys think? It seems to me Marquette and Villanova are both similar departments with pretty good record in placing their students in Top 20 phd programs. :?:
