  1. Declined from Northwestern. This nearly wraps it up for me. 2 MA programs left. Purdue is saying I might not be funded so i'm leaning towards one of the funded (still waiting funding decision) MA programs.
  2. Bye-bye Johns Hopkins. E-mailed the DGS. Got a no. :| E-mailed Northwestern. Over 400 applicants this year. First round of admits have been made. They are waiting to see the yield to make a second round of admits. Offers might start going out as soon as this week.
  3. Bye-bye Brown. E-mailed the department. Formal rejection letters would be sent soon. Oh well. :|
  4. I'm seriously thinking about calling up JHU. I see there has been some acceptances and rejections. Anyone has inside scoop on JHU? Are they done? Do they have a wait list?
  5. Thank you. I contacted the DGS at Marquette. I am indeed wait listed for funding and by his words it seems I'm pretty high in the list. The DGS did mention that if I finally get the financial aid I'm waitlisted or "alternate" for, he could 'arm-twist" the grad school in giving me a full tuition waiver. Even if that isn't the case I don't mind working on-campus or take out a mild-sized loan. So waiting seems to be in order. And yes, if I do get the aid at Marquette, a very decent MA program if i say so, I am planning to enroll there (provided i get ditched by the phd programs i'm waiting for, i.e. JHU, NWU and Brown which probably is the case).
  6. It's a half-RA, so yes, I would be working 10 hours/week. But that's what I want, so it's cool. The $6600 is a stipend, besides that, they are giving a tuition remission of 12 of the 18 credits in a year and coverage of half the health insurance costs. Would you please explain what you meant by that they are not "waitlisting" me for funding. I'm mighty confused by the term "alternate for funding". The e-mail also said this.
  7. Ah well. Waitlisted for funding. God is good. They say a shared apartment costs $250/month near the campus. That leaves me $300/month for living or about $10/day. Toughie. I guess I can duke it out for 2 years with a bit of my own money or a 10 hour/week on-campus job given the carrot that I might get into a goodly ranked PhD program after 2 years. I hear Marquette is good at placing their students in very decent PhD programs.
  8. Funding detail followed. I received this from Marquette's MA program. Would anyone explain what this means? Does this indicate I'm waitlisted for funding? I know this is not the right place for discussing this, how much does surviving cost in Milwaukee? If I do get the half-assistantship, they will be giving remission of 12 out of 18 yearly tuition credits. Also, $6600 for 10 months. Is that enough for survival?
  9. Any word from JHU? I see there's been several acceptances and rejections. It appears a wave of rejections have been sent on 26th February. I haven't heard anything. MAN.
  10. I agree with plisar. I was very particular about this in my SOP. I mentioned my area specific research interests but I did not focus into a single specific country. For instance, I mentioned terrorism in Asia at some school's SOP, I not only mentioned India but also Bangladesh and Pakistan and rising extremism and terrorist activities in Indonesia. I guess for most schools it's better to focus one's regional interests into a larger geographic area and not a single country, unless there's a single faculty member you want as your advisor whose research focus is exclusively on a single country. But even then it's risky to do that.
  11. I'm not sure but I think my terrible math grades and that I'm not keen on heavily quantitatively oriented research which killed me in places like WashU, Emory. A far as I know only UChicago has a heavy qualitative focus. Maybe there are others?
  12. congratulations !! On my side, got an invitation to the open house at Northeastern's MA program. I guess that means acceptance. Waiting for funding information.
  13. Did they send you the rejection by post or e-mail? When is the letter dated?
  14. Thanks! Happy Birthday to you. Have a nice day.
  15. The Rice rejection came in by post. The TAMU rejection as well. I hate you Texas. Coupled with WashU it makes for 3 rejections on my birthday. Perfect.
  16. B'bye to Notre Dame. E-mail rejection. 200 applicants, 18 places and somesuch. :|
  17. TAMU has mailed my letter probably by 22nd February though I haven't got it yet. A week has passed. I still haven't received any e-mail/phone call from the department. I seriously doubt the mail will bear good news. I mean, if they want me, wouldn't they be anxious to at least informally notify me after sending their official mail? I'm just speculating here. Got the official rejection letter from UChicago today, though.
  18. Man, I would get back to you in a few days. I expect the postal mail from TAMU will arrive any day now. If you're in the US, then there's still time aplenty for them to send you the acceptance by post for you to be in the visit weekend.
  19. Comparative here.
  20. Same here. I am pessimistic yet a li'l hopeful.
  21. Oh man. WUSTL is out. A rejection posted in the results page.
  22. Going by last year, Northwestern gave acceptances even in 3rd week of March. What will be the story this year?
  23. You mean snail mail? hmm. Keep your fingers crossed.
  24. Me too. Anyone already admitted/rejected got their status message changed at the application website?
  25. How about some good ol' alt.rock? I'm listening to Barenaked Ladies. 'Stunt' is a great album by them if you ask me. The album 'Beautiful Freak' by Eels (or E/Mr. E as he's known) is supercool. Also, any album by Travis, the Scottish alt.rockers. Thier new album 'Ode to J. Smith' rocks. What's with the papa bear thing though? :?: btw, Ben Folds is really cool.
