Congrats! I stopped myself from applying to Buffalo as I heard that what with the state budget in NY being a mess the funding situation in SUNYs is pretty dismal.
-
Sure thing. Pay me the return plane tickets from India to Detroit please?
-
Yeah. Screwball numbers. At least it's not as bad as Yale numbers.

It's strange that TAMU has already started notifying admits. Maybe the ones they've given out admits are the top students. I called up the department and they said early March is the earliest admits will be given out. Files are still being circulated among adcom members. I also called up the DGS at Brown. She said there's been no plans to cut funding this year but they might take 1 or 2 fewer students than usual. There has been 200 applicants, give or take a few, for 12 places (or did she say 14?). Next year (Fall 2010 class) they plan to cut funding (and hence intake since they fund everyone) significantly for the incoming class although nothing's certain. Decisions will be given out from March 1st week.

IN at Claremont Graduate U. Called up a faculty member. He said I've been admitted. Still not decided how much funding I will get for the 1st year but tuition remission will be in the 70% ballpark and it's negotiable (fellowship/RA from 2nd year). Official decision will come in a week or so.

guvmentkid, what do you mean by advisor? Whom did you exactly call?

Congrats!

How many people does Northwestern generally send admits to anyway, including folks on the waitlist? Mid 20s maybe? More/less? I guess it depends on how many people accept the admits.
-
From what I gather from conversations with faculty, Northwestern for example, they are much more lenient for international students on weaker verbal section scores. So an international student could get away with a <650 verbal score but an english speaking American applicant might not. Another argument that the faculty member gave me for them being more forgiving on international students than American applicants regarding the verbal section is that international students are new to the kind of standardized tests like the GRE but American applicants have already had experience on these kind of tests (like SAT) and they have prepared all of their life to face such tests.

Nah man. It's cool. No scenario for apologies. Some of us do tend to get a bit anxious and hyper just fooling around gradcafe all day.
-
Dude, you have already got admits from a couple of places. Compared to me you're in zen like peace.
-
There's a Northwestern admit posted on the results page. I'm on full on freak out mode. Anybody from this forum got that admit?
-
Brandeis has really small class sizes each year, no?
-
Going by previous years I expect Brown to be out around the fag end of this month and definitely by March 1st week. I would be surprised if a school like Brown with such huge endowments cut intake significantly. Last night (local time) I didn't get their DGS on phone. They are obviously very busy this time of the year. I will try tonight again.
-
I really should. I would call some schools tonight (local time). Couldn't get the DGS at few other schools last night. They were probably in class. It was already way past midnight and my girlfriend called. Therefore.

I called up a few departments. The DGS at Rice said they will be giving out admits in two waves starting sometime last week this month. The committee hasn't met yet and the files are still being circulated among adcom members. There's no certainty they will be cutting intake/funding this year but they are being cautious. Talks are still going on. Although they plan to admit around 8 students which is about the same as last year. About 80 something applied. Also called up the DGS at JHU. He said there's no plans to cut intake/funding. Admits will start coming out in a few weeks.
-
Me too.
-
Congrats!
-
erm, I have no idea. I'm just guessing. :? So the grad school has no say how much money a department gets each year for funding students?
-
The polisci departments. I'm guessing they have the inner scoop. Although, as I understand it, these decisions are made after deliberations with the grad school.
-
Great going, twright.
-
That would be Comparative. What about you?
-
Man, don't say that. The admission gods will shine on you. I spent about US$ 2200 in applications in current US$ - INR exchange rates. That's a lot of dough for a middle class South Asian family. I'm scared to think what will happen if I don't get a funded offer from somewhere. And as someone said before in the thread, this is the worst year in recent memory to apply to grad school.
-
There's a Northwestern admit posted in the gradcafe results search. So they are giving out admits on a saturday?!
-
Couldn't stop the temptation. Called up the DGS at WashU. He said only a few select admits have been given. But everyone to be notified of acceptance will be notified within the next week.
