Any insight as to whether they are admitting a full class this year and next year, or are number of spots reduced due to deferrals? I read somewhere that Harvard undergrad is admitting full class size despite deferrals and will somehow deal with a few years of increased class sizes.

No idea, but I imagine classes will still have a hybrid zoom option to them for at least the Fall semester which means they could up the class size. Although they are still limited by TAs...who knows.

Damn. I liked the magazine leading indicator theory - could have fit with Matt Clements leaving and the HKS Admissions process getting turned upside down in the process.

Also, is it just me or does the acceptance rate seem like it has drastically decreased from the 20% that was publicly stated in 2010? Sample on gradcafe is obviously not a great representation but I know a lot of people who got into the equivalent prestigious b-schools easily (rumoured to be 10-15% acceptance rates) this year whilst HKS acceptance now seems much more difficult.

In the admitted students event they had this week, one of the administrators said it was the most competitive year HKS had ever had. I think between the influx of applications due to COVID (lack of job opportunities, sudden ability to move, etc) and the deferrals from 2020 made this a really tough year.

Thanks all! Disappointing, but understandable. I’ll need to do some number-crunching to decide which program makes the most sense for someone interested in domestic health policy given my funding options.

Echoing GradSchoolGrad, if you want good intersection with the public health folks, Columbia has an excellent MPH program and they are very forward facing. Lots of opportunities to intersect with them at SIPA. Just an addition to your thought process as a Columbia alum!

    Logical.

What I can't fathom is how they may do away completely with the whole series of mails which were central to understanding admissions process. Perhaps they could truncate the period (from 2 week to 1 week). As long as they get the 5 core mails out in this week.

I'm in school as we speak, and the administrative side of my university has completely fallen off during COVID. People are working from home, communication spread is harder to manage, people are generally more stressed, etc. Add on the extra applicants this year, and it's completely reasonable to have the admissions blog posts fall by the wayside.

Matt in 2013: "My primary goal in running the Admissions Blog is to alleviate some of the stress and address some of the curiosity that comes naturally with the application process.". WHY DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT US MATT? *cry*

Wow Congrats! Do you think that living in New York is much much more expensive than Chicago? I'm a little worried about that. BTW, hope that you can be accepted to HKS! Good Luck!

Let me be the first to tell you, it is absolutely more expensive in every way. That being said, NYC is an incredible place to both study and live. There is a feeling and spirit to the city that is incomparable with any other. Amazing place...but very expensive.

  7. They continuously stated that the deferrals from 2020 would not affect decisions for 2021, but I just do not see how that could be possible. I suppose they could increase the overall class size with the expectation that some international students may have to do the first year remotely, and could accommodate more students by combining zoom and in-person instruction.

  8. Would love to know how the SIPA and Berkeley Goldman MPP curriculums compare, specifically to post-graduation job markets. I know Goldman is quant heavy in both econ and data analysis, and both are very strong academically. I have my Bachelors from Columbia so I am leaning towards Berkeley for the added network. Any input from those knowledgeable would be much appreciated!

Hey all, I think this might have something to do with the delays in the release of admission results.

    https://nypost.com/2021/03/15/columbia-university-grad-student-workers-go-on-strike/

This ain't the most reputable source but strikes have been ongoing, my guess is that this might be affecting the timeline/ release of results haha. If it means better working conditions and pay, I'm all for it.... even though I am this close to combusting from anxiety lol.

I am a current Columbia undergrad student, so I can provide a little insight on this. This is only hourly paid grad students and PhD students striking, not any administrators that would be working on admissions for SIPA. It could, possibly, affect some administrative stuff if some hourly workers are gone in the office, but I very much doubt it would push a decision date back.

It is a pretty wild strike though. Many classes are cancelled and a lot of classes have no TAs. Most professors are going to be pretty miffed about having to grade 200 final papers themselves.

  10. For those waitlisted, there is still hope! This is a tough time financially for most students, and there will be quite a few (unfortunately) that choose not to go because of anemic financial aid packages. Harvard Kennedy School has also not released their admissions yet so there will be seats that open up! I got admitted to Goldman last night, but my seat will open up if I am lucky enough to get into HKS. Have hope!!

Congratulations to everyone who made it in!
