I reached out a week or two ago and got a response basically saying, 'We're a small program. You've been waitlisted, thanks for your application.' I'll submit a response- I forgot that we could do that for waitlists.

Thank you, I was a bit hesitant about reaching out to them but I'll definitely do that now! I'm trying to plan, so knowing sooner rather than later either way is ideal.

I agree, it feels quite rude to me to not have communicated anything at all essentially two weeks before the deadline. I understand programs are very busy and get many applications, but to me it really reflects on the school itself in some ways if they don't say anything at all! Especially since these decisions involve committing ourselves to a school for 2-7 years and applications are very expensive and time consuming to complete. I can't imagine a general 'we are working on decisions still, please be patient' email to everyone on a 'waitlist' would be that difficult to send? Or just any kind of acknowledgement that they are working on the apps? Idk. It's been extremely frustrating, so I completely agree!

  2. Hi! I was just generally wondering if anyone has heard from Tulane Classical Studies MA? I've had radio silence and have yet to see anything on the results board. I wouldn't be worried but it seems typically they send responses by the end of February...it just seems a bit odd!

Thank you very much for the detailed answer! :D

I also found, at least from what I was told by faculty at several MA programs (including Brandeis and Columbia Classical Studies) that even though many of the requirements could be done in a year, they prefer that students take two years - and either remit tuition the second year, or make it a very low number, or have students do the program 'part time' so they can ultimately take more classes over the entire degree (As in, full time would be 4 courses a semester over a year and part time is 3 classes a semester over two years...something like that. Then you get 12 courses instead of 8). So it is worth contacting professors at programs you are interested in to ask how the typical structure works with timing and with tuition! Every program is different so take my experience with a grain of salt.

Oh no, that is so frustrating! I'm really hoping things work out for you this time round. This was my first time applying (the first time I knew these internships even existed & that I was eligible!), and with Covid on top it's very likely I'll be getting the dreaded rejection email. Sad though as I applied for a long-term graduate internship which are only open to people who've graduated within the last 12 months, so I won't be able to reapply which I'm super sad about. This year has really put a spanner in the works! Hoping for a miracle and we'll hear back with good news soon ?

Oh gosh that would definitely stress me out as well!!! That sucks. COVID has really slowed down museums/grad schools/just opportunities all around. Don't give up hope yet, you never know - the wait is the hardest part. ? Plus it helps me so much to know everyone else is stuck in the waiting limbo as well, that way we can all commiserate together!

Ahh interesting! Everything else is the same for me too. The suspense is killing me, though I'm an international applicant so probably don't stand a great chance given the circumstances. Best of luck to you!

I totally feel you! I think I've applied to most of the spring/summer/fall internships for the last 2/3 years (sometimes skipping a season or two) and I've only once made it to a finalist round and no further, so I'm anticipating a very solid rejection come mid April per usual. I'm still anxiously hoping though...I really hope you hear good news, it sucks that they might be considering international students less this year! What a brutal time for museums all around :(

Hopping on to see if anyone's had any updates! Had a slight change on my application portal today - my name used to show up there, which has now changed to my email address. Not particularly helpful but I just wondered if anyone else has had the same? If anyone hears back please do let us know!

No update to report, but my name has also been replaced with my email address. Everything else looks the same though!

hi! just applied for summer 2021. does anyone know when semi finalists are supposed to be contacted? or if there is any new updates regarding the internship and covid?

Just bumping this to see if anyone has heard anything! I feel like I've heard (in past years) they usually do interviews sometime in March? Does it seem like that is still the case this year?

I kind of have back up plans / action plans in case of an All-Rejection pile, and I feel like I'm kind of mentally prepared for it but it's still an ick feeling.

Every time I think I've accepted it and start think about having to move on or create a concrete back up plan I end up feeling so ick about everything! I think all-rejections is hard to stomach during a normal application season, and feels almost impossible this year because there isn't that much to distract me or to look forward to. Trying to hold on to the possibility of doing another MA (funded this time around) or maybe finding a relevant job...or maybe just applying again next year. No matter what, this has been such a stressful time for everyone!

Yeah, they already made their first round of admissions. But I was told that this year they admitted half domestic and half international students, so not being Canadian shouldn't be an issue.

Ahhh gotcha makes sense. Thanks for letting me know, that really helps. I wish schools were faster in following up then, it’s frustrating to be held in rejection limbo for weeks on end ??. Welp as soon as they and CU send my formal rejects I’m out for this round! I’m with @ClassicsCandidate, feeling very discouraged all around this year.

    I'm modern/contemporary :)

Amazing! Have you heard anything from U of T either? It's been complete radio silence for me since I talked to my POIs in the fall. I'm not a Canadian student so I think that could pose a problem with admissions/funding!

  11. 26 minutes ago, szn82 said:

I also applied to Columbia and Toronto. Who did you want to work with at U of T?

Oh awesome! My specialization is Roman art so I had two POIs for ancient. Wbu?

  12. 36 minutes ago, wookie55 said:

yeah I would have thought they would pick the waitlist too. Not sure what happened there. the only thing I can think of is that I told a few close colleagues of my POI that I was planning to accept at another program, and it's a small community and people talk so ... ? It's a comforting thought at least.

I actually had already decided against Columbia but I wanted to have the satisfaction of declining the offer lol.

Agreed, it is very strange! That could be it? If your interview was good I doubt there would be any other reason. What I've learned this year is that AdComs work in incomprehensible ways...particularly with COVID. I've also been generally wondering what specializations Columbia admitted this year because if they only took 5 they are excluding so many different areas and time periods!

LOVE the concept of declining Columbia. I did two years ago for one of their MA programs and it felt great.

I'm with you! Total radio silence. Are you referring to the PhD or MA? It seems the Masters students generally don't hear until second week of March regardless of decision. Irritating they don't tell the PhD folks as soon as possible though. ?

PhD this time! I applied to two other MAs (in Classics) and am only waiting on Columbia and Toronto Art History for PhDs. This seems to confirm that they've both sent acceptances/rejections are on the way so I'm going to start crossing my finger for the MAs and MA funding! Best of luck, I'm hoping you hear good news!

  13. 5 minutes ago, wookie55 said:

yes! I actually got a rejection (not a waitlist), after a very positive interview. I'm not sure what happened with that! it was one of my top choices (and the interview went really well), so was tough that they specifically sent only  me a rejection lol.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry! That's so bizarre...I bet they are waiting to send the mass rejections to the rest of us until later. I'm surprised they rejected people who interviewed, I would have thought they picked the waitlist from there! That's really rough.

I'm disappointed, but I think deep down I know that I'd be a better fit in another Columbia program not taking students this year. Still, a hard pill to swallow regardless!

EDIT: Saw your edit just now! Good to know I can lay it to rest. I still want the official rejection so I can move on with my day to day life but that helps quite a bit.

  14. Beyond acceptances for Columbia (congrats!) has anyone received a rejection or waitlist at this point? The board shows they usually send the rejections quite late in March...closure would be nice!

  15. 2 minutes ago, szn82 said:

    you might get waitlisted? Idk

True! I’m trying to not keep my hopes up because this cycle has been so unequivocally filled with bad news ?? but it’s always possible.

  16. 8 minutes ago, szn82 said:

I think they already sent out acceptances to their first round

Ahhhhhhh okay congrats to those who heard back!! Anyone okay with sharing their fields? I’m assuming that means I’m out of the running but I’m glad to at least know now and not later!

  17. 2 minutes ago, ClassicsCandidate said:

Oh, nice! KCL is definitely on my list as well, I just haven't perused a lot of its site yet. One of my friends is within walking distance of the British Museum where she goes to school, too, and I imagine having it right there is an enormous help.

Germany would be really cool but I don't know any German, myself. It's why I'm going for the English-speaking countries or places that offer to do the PhD in English and have immersion lessons for the country's language (I'd want to learn it as soon as I got there and continue until I was relatively fluent!)

I loved it! I loved the inter-collegiate program - I took a bunch of classes at & with UCL and Royal Holloway which was amazing. I guess I'll wait until the end of this application cycle and then spend some time and research reflecting on next steps and looking at places abroad. I don't know if I have the mental fortitude to start this all again in the fall!

Yeah --- we all have to remember that the rejections this year might not be reflective of us as scholars but as the current situation everyone is in and the fact that there are a LOT of brilliant people applying right now and it's going to be a numbers game as far as getting in (I had someone I knew at Cornell inform me that no one who asked to work with the professor I wanted to work with got in, either, so that did help a bit)

I'm looking into all possible funding for international students, including a Fulbright for the first year of the PhD (although of course that's not guaranteed, either), but I'll be digging into that type of research once I know for sure I haven't gotten into any program in the US. Which university did you attend, if you don't mind my asking? I've been looking into Trinity College Dublin, St. Andrews, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Durham, and Exeter thus far.

Exactly! It just sucks that it feels bad either way, even if I know it doesn’t reflect on me at all :( but it does help to know it really is outside of our control.

I was at King’s College London! I also got into Edinburgh and ultimately turned them and two other US MAs down because I wanted daily access to the British Museum since my focus is ancient art. I’ve had friends in various related fields at St. Andrews, Durham, Exeter, and Edinburgh who all absolutely loved their time there. I’ve heard great things about the other schools as well. I also think it would be so cool to do a degree in Germany but I would have to improve my German by leaps and bounds...

I'm personally looking into UK and Irish universities to apply to if I don't get into anywhere this cycle and apply to US, UK, and Irish (and possibly other international) universities for the next cycle.

That perspective really helps and I agree! It’s been a brutal year for this, and the number of schools that pulled applications was huge, especially for the interdisciplinary programs.
I did my MA in the UK so if you have any questions feel free to message me! I would’ve loved to stay in the UK for a PhD but getting international funding was so intimidating and stressful. Maybe I’ll look into it for next year as well!

Yeah, the email said they got 10x the applications than the amount of students they could accept into the program. Pretty much what I've been hearing from everyone, really.

That’s an insane number, wow! At this point I only have a few left to hear from and it seems very likely it will be bad news. I’m holding a little bit of hope no matter what but I’m trying to come up with some backup plans! COVID really seems to have narrowed funding and admits significantly :(

Hi, I've reached out to professors after rejection multiple times (this is my 3rd app cycle, lol). I only reached out to those who I had Skype meetings or phone calls with in the Fall. They were all super nice and incredibly helpful. They will almost never speak to specifics (you won't hear, "we didn't accept you because of X reason") but they advised on next steps and how to strengthen my profile. It's also nice because I feel like they're a bit more "real" than when you speak with them prior to applying. Their advice led me to do the MA that I did, so definitely worth it. That being said, a couple I reached out to never responded, which I also totally understand - it's a little awkward!

    Good luck!

Thank you so much, this helps lots! This is my second cycle but the first time around I only did MAs and it felt a lot more straightforward - with PhDs I feel so out of my element so I really appreciate it.

I'm ngl, I really wish schools would be more up front about how many people they take (especially this year) per year. I'd like to know how many people applied to ISAW, for example, for 2 spots. Not in order to make me more anxious but rather help reassure myself that there may be hundreds (if not more) qualified students I'm competing against, so it's not necessarily that I'm not good enough for the program but they had to make pretty tough calls, you know? I feel like those stats would at least help a little.

I did see a suggestion that you reach out to schools after a rejection and inquire how to make your application stronger for the next cycle, so I'm looking into how to do that/wanted to ask if anyone here has done that before? I still haven't heard anything, but I'm one to make sure I'm prepared for all scenarios.

I had this same question. I’ve gotten one rejection already and while brutal feeling I’d love to know if there is an appropriate way to reach back out for advice on strengthening future application cycles! I feel like enough work and effort went into each app that it’s completely fair to ask for feedback, I’m just not sure how to go about it.

Also, in reference to number of spots this year - I lowkey feel like the numbers changed between October/November plans and what they are now deciding in January! Professors were very clear with me in that it would be smaller cohorts this year, but I never imagined they would be *that* small. I agree it would totally help to know some stats just to feel less bad and stressed about the whole thing!

  23. 2 minutes ago, Hammurabi000 said:

It's super stressful -- I'm international, and I only applied to 3 programs. I know ISAW is only taking two this year, so it'll be really tight! This whole process is so stressful, I really hope this is the only time I'll be applying lol

Oh wow, everyone is taking so few people! Good to know though. I did apply, and haven’t heard anything yet. Honestly this process has been more discouraging than I anticipated - not really wanting to go through it again either!
