  1. I just wanted to say that this has also been a major concern for me too. You're definitely not alone! Can you take courses outside the social work school at UT? That's something that's been really important to me in choosing a school; I know I want the ability to take relevant academic coursework in other departments/schools in case the core coursework (especially first year content) isn't challenging. For example, there's a professor of medical anthropology that focuses on the medicalization of mental health diagnosis and teaches some interesting classes at the school in hoping to attend - 100% signing up for that as it won't be seen totally off-topic/irrelevant. I also know the program I chose has off-campus study opportunities which is appealing to me. There's also the fact that you're joining an academic community! Wherever you go you'll have access to incredible libraries, alumni, professors, talks and events - you can and will find ways to challenge yourself. I hope this helps at least a little bit somehow (sorry I don't have much else to add!), it's honestly relieving to see I'm not the only one concerned about this! I also feel elitist and entitled, but am trying to remember that this is a program we're paying for and we have every right demand and hope for a level of intellectual stimulation that feels right to us. And that we will, ultimately, benefit as both social workers and critical thinkers by challenging ourselves academically.
  2. This such a small point, but: I ultimately didn't go with Penn because the first year core curriculum seems almost entirely planned out. I'm also interested in both clinical and macro positions and found that I wouldn't be able to take many specific electives (geared towards both tracks) if my entire first year was decided for me! I'm sure that structure/schedule works for some, but it just wasn't for me. I also got the sense from some students that the program wasn't particularly rigorous or anything (though granted these students were on zoom!) - which is something I'm drawn towards. I'm sure Penn is awesome, the school has incredibly supportive vibes and the students seem wonderful. But it's up to you to look into either program and find what makes or breaks it for you! Good luck with your decisions guys!
  3. Ooh gotcha, thanks so much for the clarification! Seems most schools may not increase aid by a significant amount then - that's useful to know. Congrats on the scholarship and thank you!
  4. Wow I'm glad I saw this so quickly, thank you for such a detailed response! Was this for UChicago? I looked through a few older posts this morning and noticed most increases were 5k. Very worrying as I'd need maybe 10k, I feel, to justify attending! Ah things are expensive. Thank you again.
  5. I'd like to second this question! Has anyone been successful in appealing for more aid? And by how much? There's a huge gap in what I've been offered from different schools (15k+ gap) and I'm wondering how realistic it is to ask schools to increase aid by such a large amount! Does anyone know if that's something schools do or have done in the past? Thanks so much. You guys are the best.
  6. Hi hi all! I have another question: Has anyone been successful in getting an extension to respond to the 3 week deadline from Maryland? Thanks so much!
  7. Whoa, that's an awesome scholarship - congratulations!!!!! So glad all these good things are finally coming your way; I can't imagine having to wait past a deadline for an acceptance. You earned it!! Penn is also the last program I'm waiting on. I know they said two weeks after an interview is around the time to get a decision, but does anyone know if this is actually the case? When did you interview? Eager to have this acceptance season be over with so we can all decide where we're going and plan for our futures!!
  8. Hi! Just wanted to say I was accepted to UChicago last night (maybe around 7 or something?) via the portal! I was awarded a 20k scholarship. It feels surreal. Shoutout to all my other 'former bad students,' delinquents and first-gen college graduates out there. I had insane anxiety and imposter syndrome while waiting for a decision (literally any decision, only ended up actually applying to 3 schools even though I had initially planned on 5-6). So if that's you right now, I see you and I love you. GL guys! :,)
  9. Hi all! Haven't been on this thread for a sec, though I left it open on my computer for months for occasional stalking haha. Anyone else who applied to Chicago by 1/15 waiting this week? Has anyone heard anything / or have an idea of when they'll hear back? Feeling super anxious! I swear last month some people had heard back by this time already. Aaah.
  10. Haha I think that's super true! At least I feel like people here are generally really supportive. And wow - that's a super interesting narrative; I'm sure you'll add a ton to the program having had a whole other graduate school experience. Good for you! And thank you! I applied for the Jan deadline, a little late - I wasn't sure if I was going to apply this cycle. Yes, I'm a recent grad and it's one of my insecurities right now, I think haha; it's hard to prove you're a mature early-20-something through the application materials. It's a reach, but I'm hoping I'll get in somewhere! Cheers to you again! :')
  11. I would be too! That's so awesome, you should feel incredibly proud right now! And thanks for dealing with all our anxious questions, haha; UChicago is such a toughie. I'm happy to know they value research and volunteer experience! Are you also a recent grad? Congratulations again. That's so huge. I hope you feel confident as hell tonight.
  12. Assuming that was on the results page, I'm guessing it was good news?! And if you don't mind me asking for all us other Chicago hopefuls - what drew you to their program, and what do you think made your application? Glad they're finally getting back to people! Even if it's slow.
  13. Ah, I see! That makes sense! I also applied for similar reasons initially as I have friends in the area, but have grown more and more interested in the interests and specialities of faculty. It's a huge program with so much potential! I only applied to 5 schools, so it's definitely in my top haha - I don't think I have a bottom. Good luck to you, and thanks for responding!
  14. Ahhh congratulations! I also applied to Maryland! Glad to hear they're relatively on top of sending out decisions, I applied mid-January and wasn't expecting a response for a long time since the admissions office seemed so busy. I know you've said BU is your first choice (crossing my fingers for you!), but is there a reason you applied to Maryland? I've never been to Baltimore, but find myself really attracted to the city and their program. Would love to hear how and why it made it onto your list!
  15. Oh my goodness, this thread is popular today! I don't have much to weigh in on some of the discussions, but I'll throw out a question that's been asked on other forums: How competitive do you think MSW programs are? Are there any differences in micro/macro? And does anyone feel (or have evidence to suggest) this cycle is considerably more competitive with deferments and a possible increase in applications due to the pandemic?
