  1. that's amazing! congratulations!! must feel so good after this slog of an admissions cycle
  2. In my personal experience, and based off of the opinions of academics I’ve consulted, it’s very rare these days to be admitted from undergrad straight into a PhD program— I’ve actually never heard of it. Some programs, like NYU Tisch PhD in Cinema Studies, don’t accept anyone without a Masters as a rule. Others may have different experiences though or have heard of students making that progression! It was my original hope to do what you’re describing so I totally understand where you’re coming from, but unfortunately the humanities are quite limited in terms of funding these days so I think admissions teams tend to look for people with a more “proven” track record of excellence in the field, which usually means a masters. In terms of writing samples, I think having a sample that’s close to want you want to study is very helpful for the PhD, but not as essential for masters applications. Just something film focused is usually good enough for the masters level!
  3. Just got word from Yale and it was a rejection. Unfortunate but expected! I applied to the Film and English combined program, if that’s helpful for anyone to know.
  4. My letter said: “The Art History and Film and Media Studies faculty recently met to review applications for the Department's PhD program. Although we were extremely impressed by your application, the faculty had to make difficult decisions given this year's exceptionally strong pool of candidates. We are sorry to inform you that we will not be able to offer you admission to our program. We greatly appreciate your interest in our program, and wish you all the best with your future plans and ongoing studies.” So yeah, two paragraphs. Seemed pretty standard to me although ofc I’d like to believe they were “extremely impressed” haha ?
  5. Just got a rejection letter from Stanford PhD in Art History (FMS). Wanted to drop the info here in case anyone is waiting to hear from that program.
  6. Hey I applied to Yale (English and Film and Media Studies), but haven’t heard anything yet! Which combination did you apply to? Also, I’m curious how you heard about those interviews/acceptance?
  7. this school hasn’t been discussed yet but I was recently waitlisted for UT Austin American Studies PhD. I feel meh about it. Anyone else hear from them??
  8. Also, this thread seems pretty US centric but I thought I’d include the UK schools just in case there are any other transatlantic applicants out there!!
  9. Hi everyone! Excited about this thread. I applied to: -Yale (English and film combined PhD) -Stanford (Art History with film focus PhD) -UT Austin (American studies PhD) -UC Berkeley (Film PhD) -NYU Tisch (Cinema Studies PhD) -Oxford (English PhD, but secretly film) -Cambridge (Films and Screen PhD) -Uni Warwick (Film and TV Studies PhD) So far I’ve had an interview with Cambridge, acceptance at Warwick, and been waitlisted at UT Austin. I’d also be curious of anyone knew the number of places at these institutions
