2023 Fall Sociology Applications - Support, Advice, Results, Etc

Thanks for your questions! Overall, the process is stressful: for one thing, I was trying my best to prepare all the materials; for another, I can't stop being doubtful about everything, especially that if I am good enough. But I do feel relieved too when I submitted all my apps. I am also an international applicant and want to focus on race and ethnic studies in my proposed sociology programs. I only applied to programs without GRE, including University of Chicago, University of Washington, Indiana University Bloomington, University of Texas Austin, Rice University, UC Santa Barbara, University of Toronto, University of Wisconsin Madison, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Northwestern University, Princeton University, Yale University, Cornell University, and University of Virginia. Nervous about the results, but now just want to fully enjoy the holidays- 531 replies

2023 Fall Sociology Applications - Support, Advice, Results, Etc

Hi all, I am looking for advice on remaindering the person to submit LOR. I still have one more LOR needed and just sent that person an email reminder this Monday about the Dec. 15 deadline. Yet, the letter is not submitted at this point even though I got a "will do" response. I think some programs, if not many, are flexible about the deadline for LOR, but I am wondering what I should do if there is no letter submitted after today. Do I need to send that person another email reminder this late afternoon. And how should I communicate with each program about this situation. All thoughts and ideas are welcomed. Many many thanks- 531 replies

Hi all, I noticed this when I was filling in information in application portals. Many schools have a separate section that ask for employment, publication, and awards. My confusion is that when these experiences will be reflected in the CV, so why bother to type them separately in the portal. Any perspective is welcome. Thanks!

My background is mostly in humanities and communication (related to social science) but has almost zero training in statistics. I noticed that many sociology programs expect applicants have some portion of the statistical background, even from a qualitative scope. So, I am wondering if it is necessary to address my potential or ability to do basic statistical tasks. I also noticed that many programs require taking some statistical coursework; is it a big stretch for non-STEM students? I didn't have any statistical courses during my undergraduate because I was an English major and only had a semester-long SPSS training which was not reflected on my transcript. Any comments and thoughts are welcome. Thank you!

Hi, First-time applicant here and was not a sociology major. Plan to apply to PhD program this fall (change from another PhD program). I would like to connect with anyone who are intersted in chatting and support each other as needed :). Feel free to DM.

What is a good introduction to the ideas of Jürgen Habermas?
twolucky replied to manikqile's topic in Philosophy
Hi, I am working on something similar with Habermas's theory of communication. If you are interested, we can have a brief Zoom meeting. -
Hi, I think you are currently in good shape considering responding your earlier acceptance. That is I don't think you need to respond before April 15, and even no need to respond until they reach out to you first because departments are so careful about the first-round admissions and most funded students' decisions before that date. That means they will have the optimal communication with these students to collect their ideas about their acceptances. I had this situation with several programs in which they told me I was offered the admissions but they also told me they will contact me once the funding is available. I am sorry to tell you that you will need to be more patient at this stage because you are not on their first-round list. One program even told me to wait to hear from them in June, and I think that was just ridiculous. If you can make an international phone call, try to call their department and ask what is going on.
