They had something missing from my file the other day and they just broadly said "April" when I asked, haha.

    ^ No particular day ?

Does anyone know if there is an exact day Dal will release acceptances? From what I’ve seen so far on here it seems like no, just getting antsy since Ontario schools have an exact date ahhhh

Just wanted to add to this! U of A also has a speech science course in first term that talks about pitch, resonance, breath, etc. We also have a voice and resonance disorders course next year too. In our speech science course we talked a little bit about transgender individuals but not a ton, however it seemed that prof was fairly knowledgable about that topic or at least interested in researching more about it. For placements at U of A, you are able to make special requests to work with special populations and so its possible that this could be something you could request, but it really depends on what opportunities are available and who is willing to take you on as a student. I'm not 100% sure if there are opportunities specifically catered to this area out there or not, so you would have to check with the clinical placement coordinators to be sure. Also, there was actually a student in the voice program who joined our cohort for our speech science class. He is doing his masters degree in MFA Voice Pedagogy at U of A. He is also doing applied research in that field researching a new technique he designed to tune the human voice. Maybe this degree could be worth looking into more if you're interested in that area! I don't know too much about it but if you're wanting more info, send me a message and I could put you in contact with him. ?

So helpful, thank you! I'll take some time to poke around on the website, but I may take you up on that.

I'm a first-year student at Western so I can touch on our program a bit. We have a great speech science course in our first term that talks a lot about pitch, resonance, breath, etc. and has a sister clinical applications course where we practice analyzing/measuring these things. However, our voice disorders course isn't until second year so I can't really provide information on that. I am finishing my first placement this week at Western's in-house clinic and I just happened to be randomly assigned to a voice client. My clinical supervisor (who I believe is always or at least usually the supervisor for voice clients) is absolutely amazing. She is extremely knowledgeable about working with voice disorders, LSVT, singers/actors, transgender individuals, etc. and she is always happy to share information/answer questions.

I don't believe that you can request certain areas for your first placement but if you do end up at Western and happen to get a voice placement I don't think you would be disappointed.

I hope this helps! Feel free to message me if you have any questions :)

Thank you so much, that's super helpful

When you say voice do you mean singing and voice training?

Yep! Singing, gender affirmation, rehab, that sort of thing :) I know that it's a competitive area within the field and you also need additional training, but curious if any of the programs themselves are geared towards it

Does anyone know anything about when Alberta is sending acceptances out? Was hoping it would be soon like in previous years. Also, is Dal sending out offers April 1st too? Or have they been known to do it later than that?

Dal has not specified to my knowledge and has historically been all over the map. Last year they sent out some acceptances with no prior word after april 15, but hopefully that was just an adjusting-to-covid thing

Hey guys, anybody else feeling super anxious for April 1st? I can't seem to focus on anythingggg going on in my life besides application results. I keep obsessively checking Western's portal page even though I know I won't find out until April 1st lol. My birthday is also coming up in a week and normally I'm really excited about my birthday (especially this year when we have nothing else to celebrate due to the pandemic), but the stress of finding out whether I got into Western or not is absolutely killing me... so much so that I impulsively cut 12 inches off of my 4-year long grown hair lmao. Anyways, I hope everyone is keeping healthy during this time! A couple of more weeks and we'll have our decisions! Good luck to everyone :).

Also, congratulations to everyone who has been accepted or waitlisted to any university so far! It's an amazing achievement and I hope you all are very proud of yourselves! For the others (myself included), let's keep our heads high and hope for the best! Remember, everything happens for a reason :). Cheers!

Haha I'm in the same boat, with a birthday coming up as well ? with no clue when most of the schools I applied to are going to release their results I literally feel like I spend most of my time during the day checking my email, or thinking about checking my email. It's a rough time but I keep thinking that I've waited this long, I can stick it out for a couple more weeks. I hope that helps you too. Best of luck, and happy early birthday :)

I haven't, but I've tried contacting UBC several times over the past year or so with no luck. They just don't answer, it's quite frustrating. Yeah, I might do that at this point. Thank you!

Oh geez I'm sorry to hear that. What email have you been using? non.degree@ubc.ca has been quick to respond to me lately but I've also had nightmare experiences trying to get through to them in the past so I hear you

Edit to add: you don't have to take it till the summer before the program (source - I have friends who've done it) but the registration process takes a while and sometimes the class fills up. Non-degree reg is in very early april usually so if you chose to go that route, I would get registered as a non-degree student in early jan next year (or start bugging them in december even) and then if you get in, pay your deposit and register or  get on the waitlist asap. Hope that is helpful :)

I'm still trying to decide what schools I'll want to apply to, but for UBC I would need: a phonology course, speech science course, cognitive psych or psycholinguistics course. For U of A I would need a cognitive psych course and a neuroanatomy or neuropsychology course. For a couple schools I need a human anatomy and physiology course (U of T, Western, etc). For UDEM I would a course in human development (adult / adolescent / old age). Might also need a neuroscience course for UDEM.

Have you already taken AUDI 402 through UBC? I'd assume that would cover the neuroanatomy for UA and UDEM, but not sure. It's online course but not self-paced. Beyond that, I'm less sure, although I think some schools are offering courses online this summer before a hopeful return to campus in the fall, so it may be worth looking into becoming a non-degree or unclassified student somewhere to see if you could take courses there. Good luck!!

Hi guys, I still have some prerequisites I'll have to get done if I apply next year as well. Just trying to plan out my next year or so, but have had trouble finding all the prerequisite courses online. Have any of you taken prereqs online and if so, where did you take them? I'm currently taking two from Athabasca, but they don't have all the courses I need and honestly I prefer less of an independent study method and more of a structured course with a professor online.

Hello! What school do you want to apply to/which courses do you still need?

Hi! UWO is not specific. When I ask for feedback they are EXTREMELY general, and therefore not very helpful. So no, I wasn't given any specific feedback on my letter of intent, but they said it just needs to grab the reader's attention more.

ahh, gotcha. Thank you for getting back to me :) I have also heard that their waitlist is massive, so it makes sense that their feedback might need to be general, but also frustrating for you. I hope that this year goes well for you, it sounds like you are a really good candidate

Hi Everyone! Just thought I would jump in here. I am a Western student and have been applying to SLP grad schools for THREE YEARS. This year I applied to Western, McMaster, McGill, Dalhousie. I have been waitlisted at UWO twice now, and rejected from McMaster twice with no interview.

    Some Stats:

    • I have a 3.5 sGPA
    • 350+ volunteer hours (children in school, children with disabilities, adults with aphasia, adults with autism)
    • An honors bachelor degree in psychology from UWO
    • A graduate certificate in Autism and Behavioural Sciences from Fanshawe

I haven't heard anything from McGill yet, but I know other people have been waitlisted with higher GPAs than me, so I am assuming I have been rejected?

I had emailed UWO in 2019 and 2020 to ask why I was waitlisted

    • 2019: Improve your prerequisite course marks (which I did for the next application- took 2.5 more credits)
    • 2020: Told to improve my letter of intent. Was also told I was in the "4th quadrant" of the waitlist, but wasn't told how many people were on the waitlist. However, I have heard rumors the waitlist is generally about 100 people long.

Hey! Thank you for sharing, this is helpful information :) did they specify how you could improve your LOI? If you feel comfortable sharing

Has anyone heard from McGill today? In past years, they've reached out to accepted applicants starting the second Wednesday of March.

Not till next week apparently: (I didn't apply but I hope this helps)

    Hello Everyone!

For those who applied to McGill, my coworker graduated from McGill speech last year and one of her friends who is still in the program told her applicants will find out next week!

Just thought I would let everyone know so you're not constantly checking your email this week like me :)

Sooooo... I emailed Vicki (using an alias and a new Gmail account to keep it anonymous?) and it looks like a longer wait is confirmed. We can all stop incessantly checking emails for a little while....

Thanks for sharing! Just out of curiosity, did you specify that you were emailing about SLP?

  14. Hey guys! I'm freaking out too but gentle reminder that UA has completely changed their admissions process this year and, even without that, has been really variable with respect to when they send out admissions offers over the last 5 years

Also remember that most schools outside of Ontario send admissions out in waves! (eg last year UA accepted someone on the 13th after sending out what looks like most of their offers on the 9th, UBC almost always doesn't send them all at once, and it looks like dal sent offers out over the course of 2-3 weeks last year)

If it helps you can set emails from the admissions officers to re-direct to a different inbox so you can check at your leisure if you, like me, have to check you email during exams in the coming weeks :) Good luck!!
