Patiently awaiting Sweden's decisions to be released, I suppose at this point no news is good news.

Friends of mine in Sweden say the political/cultural situation there is currently not well, with many people in the government advising the population to prepare for war.. which is a level of "freak-out" that is very not typical for Swedes and especially their politicians.

Hopefully things remain secure and your grant will be able to continue as planned! I'm sure you'll hear good news soon:)

I've heard back, I won a Fulbright Student Award! Very excited, still unsure whether I'll accept it (as I've been accepted to LSE, as well), but yes. Successful round :)

CONGRATS!! That's great to hear! Either choice is sure to be a good one in terms of prestige:)

  3. My waiting is pretty much over. Alternate. Not the end of the world, but the end of feasible funding. There's only one grant of this type, and I'm fairly certain the winner isn't gonna pass this up. Oh well. Maybe the uni will give me some scholarships independently!

  4. Hey everyone! I hope you're all dealing with the wait better than I am. I've been looking through the Fulbright google sheet, and so far it looks like students applying to Austria, France, Hungary, Iceland, and maybe Morocco and Romania have heard back. In all likelihood I won't hear back until April (based on previous notification dates) but the wait is getting to me. To make the waiting worse, the university I applied for with the Fulbright won't release my scholarship information until Fulbright gives me the finals notification. So I'm now waiting for Fulbright results and for the university's scholarship results to come out at about the same time. Eugh.

Anyway. Back to my waiting I suppose!

I'm really sorry @crackemon are you a senior?

I GOT IN!!!!!! finally... after starting to learn Korean because I was motivated by the possibility of winning NSLI-Y, failing in the semifinalist round and crying more than I've ever cried in my life... applying to CLS three years in a row, getting my essays destroyed with feedback each time to improve, and failing in the first round every time... I'm fucking going to Korea this summer!

and I didn't mention this before... but I met my boyfriend while studying abroad in Korea this fall. So CLS is the only way I'll be able to meet him for a year at least... that's another reason why it became so important to me.

I'm legit sobbing right now from happiness... thanks for the good vibes ??

Congrats!! I'm so excited for you! I'm glad you'll be able to see your boyfriend, what an amazing opportunity! Can't wait to hear more as you go through the process:)

I did the virtual institute for Persian last year too. It was really great, don't get me wrong! But I unfortunately don't think I can justify delaying getting my PhD by doing virtual another summer. If it was in person, I would absolutely go for it though.

Hm, I can understand why you may choose not to participate this year. It's a shame that programs need to stay virtual, but honestly I'm quite surprised that any are planning on going in-person. I'm sure there will be other opportunities to travel and use your language skills!

Have yet to receive an email but logged into AIS Forms and was greeted with acceptance terms to sign, so others may want to take a look. It looks like Hindi will be in-person this year, though with group housing instead of homestays.

That sounds like a sign of finalist status tunes! Make sure to check your spam folder, several CLS emails got caught in mine when I was on the scholarship.

well results are out and I’m an alternate :( I don’t think I’ll end up moving on since the Korean program is in person and I can’t imagine people denying the offer. big sad and I don’t want to have to wait…

I'm sorry to hear that crackemon, but don't discount the possibility yet! I knew a lot of people who went from alternate to finalist, and some of those people even declined after that. Keep your head up!

so if anyone is checking this... decisions will probably come out today. The portal was updated last night.

I feel so sick it's crazy. This is my fourth time applying for CLS and first time becoming a semifinalist (I'm a senior). And probably my last chance, since idk when/if I'll go to grad school. I have comments in past years' threads... this is my last chance but I can't stop feeling sick to my stomach about the thought of not winning. I want to go to Gwangju, Korea this summer...

    please send good vibes :(

Best of luck sowon!! Good vibes sent!

Hi all! The email went to my spam folder early Feb. (mortifying) and I just realized now thanks to a follow-up, but I received word I "passed the first step and that the Adjudication Committee has recommended you for a 2022-2023 Fulbright Canada Traditional Student Award to the United States." They go on to say we should hear on or before April 15th.

Oh congrats rchow!! I'm glad you checked up on it, when I was applying for CLS there were so many emails that got caught in my spam filter as well, so you're not alone in that! I'm glad to hear that you've made it past the semifinals, and I look forward to hearing more in April! Best of luck!

  11. It's March everyone! Let the incredibly vague March to May finals notification period begin! Now we can continue to wait, but with more email refreshing.
For friends that have finals notifications in April, I wish you the best of luck! Just one more month to wait for the month of waiting!

Let the obsessive e-mail checking this week begin. Best of luck to all the other semi-finalists anxiously awaiting emails this week.

Best of luck to everyone!! While I'm not waiting on a CLS notification this year, I'm excited to hear from all of you semifinalists as they come out!

Hi all, Canadian who applied to Fulbright US student award. I feel like they told us it'd be later (April?) we hear back, but I might've made that up. I also realized (because I was travelling at the time) that I did not submit a bibliography, so I'm... a little dejected. Anyway, good luck to everyone. I hope you were not dumb like me and submitted *all* the things.

Hi rchow, hopefully it works out anyway! The timeline for the foreign student program is different from the timeline for the US student program, so you're probably right that you'll hear back in April. Best of luck, and be sure to update us once you hear back!

They were actually asked on Instagram and they gave this reply:

I also emailed the program coordinator for one of the programs and he gave this reply:image.png.f640fae555564efb5e2f5e21ea654b61.png

Oh wow, thanks for going out and getting the information! Very proactive. Hopefully all the semifinalists in this thread will get to go to their sites in-person this year!

    Hello all,

I just wanted to stop by and say good luck to everyone who is going through the process, and congrats to the people who have become semi-finalists. I am a former US-UK Fulbright scholar (study/research award), and I have been helping others with the process and told them about this forum as a resource. Back when I applied for the 2015- 2016 cohort, there were hundreds of people on it, and it became a great resource and support system. I know the process is taxing, but it was definitely worth it in the end. And for the people who did not make it to the next round, I definitely don't want to invalidate or minimize how it may feel, but I also want to let you know there were many Fulbright scholars who applied multiple times and got it on their 2nd, 3rd, and one person I know 6th try. So, if it is something you want to do then maybe you can try again (i.e., if you're up for it).

Take care everyone and good luck!

Thanks for your encouraging thoughts! It would seem that Fulbrighters on GradCafe are few and far between this season (or just quiet) but I'm looking forward to hearing from everyone as the competition continues!

congrats @ohdunk! I'm a semi-finalist to the Sweden research-study. Did you fill out the spreadsheet?

Congrats!! Hopefully we hear good things when finals start coming out!

No, I didn't fill out the spreadsheet, but I might later! It does seem like a nice resource for people down the line.

Where did you hear they are focusing on virtual this year? I haven't heard any indication for the upcoming summer, just that they were debriefing the 2021 virtual institutes with all the program directors.

Hm, I thought they mentioned in the application this year that they were planning for virtual, but would go in-person if it could be arranged. Maybe I'm misremembering!

  18. Hi everyone! My gradcafe account was glitched out yesterday, but I've gotten my semifinalist notification for my student-study grant to Italy! I can't wait to hear more about your applications as well.

Also @MuchSynergyWowSoIntersec, to answer your question I think that you've applied to the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, whereas I've applied to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The U.S. Student Program timeline is different to yours. I'm excited to hear about the progress on your application, though you have quite a while to wait!

@birk3947, where have you applied to?

  19. While I don't have any data or anything, just looking at the threads and hearing from my groupmates last year it definitely feels like there have been more rejections this year. I'll be interested to see how many people are actually selected as finalists- last year it was 666, 2020 was 252, 2019 was 545, 2018 was 555 (...why are they symmetrical? a secret requirement maybe). I'd be really surprised if they willingly reduced the number this year, especially since they've said they're focusing on online programs for this summer anyway.

Anyway. Definitely a little disappointed, but we'll move on to other things! Time to start taking Middlebury seriously.

  20. Not selected this time. As far as I can see this was my last year of being eligible, so it's time to move on to new things I suppose!! Thankful for the language gains I made last year, and trying to look ahead towards the future! I can't wait to hear about the finals as you all progress, and my condolences to fellow non-semifinalists!

  21. Oh I really hope not! According to Umenohana's post in the 2021 thread the latest the semifinals have come out in recent years was January 28. I'm really hoping they don't come out that late... Maybe they'll come out tomorrow? Hopefully? Waiting for both the CLS and Fulbright semifinals has been frying my brain this month. Best of luck to everyone- both for the scholarship and for staying sane while we wait!
