SAIS decisions are out, apparently:
understatement700 replied to avr2012's topic in Government Affairs Forum
A lot of times the schools are really sneaky about how they list that data though. They say, "This year we had X amount of applicants for only Y amount of spots" but that's not the ratio of the acceptance rate- just those who actually decide to matriculate. It seems to me that most schools don't actually want people to know their real acceptance rate. -

You better believe that when the emails get sent this thread will blow up. -
Ok cool, then I should see you there.

I emailed mine and got an email back 10 days later which was just a reply to the email I'd sent, it wasn't a mass BCCed email. -
Thank you! I didn't get that email, maybe because my current address on IR/PS's file isn't my DC one. I just RSVPed though. Are you planning on going?
-
Do you think IR/PS will have an admitted student info session in DC? I can't remember if they said that anywhere. I'm going to Maxwell's DC admitted students reception/info session tomorrow.
-
Yes, I really like the IR/PS professional curriculum blended with a regional studies focus on the Pacific Rim. They have some stellar faculty in my field of interest too doing really interesting research. San Diego is far away from the policy-making institutions of DC but I'm still undecided how important that really is. I'm living in DC right now but not specifically determined one way or the other yet whether I'd prefer to stay here for grad school or not. In many ways, living in San Diego for a few years sounds pretty awesome. But I don't want to think too much more until I hear back from all my schools AND hear funding info!

I wouldn't conclude that about the Robertson Fellowship. In the email they sent out after they received my Robertson Fellowship application it said that if we were accepted for the fellowship it wouldn't likely be reflected in our initial admissions packet. What I don't know is if they contact those not accepted for the fellowship too or if you they only contact those accepted for it. -
I got the same thing, but I didn't originally submit official transcripts, just uploaded mine on the application website. I think it just means that if you decide to go to IRPS you will have to have your official transcripts sent in to them.

UCSD v/s GWU ELLIOT v/s NYU-SCPS
understatement700 replied to AkashC's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I guess it depends what you want. Where do you want to work afterwards? GW has the advantage of being in an excellent location in DC and would allow you to intern while studying. I do believe most classes are at night though, so keep that in mind. I don't know anything about he NYU program but know a bit about UCSD-IRPS since I am considering going there. Do you have a regional concentration you're interested in too? For my academic and personal interests I would prefer IRPS over those other schools but I wouldn't recommend that everyone do that if it doesn't match what you're looking for. -

Bgreenster- yes, they've been a bit unclear and I'm still not sure if they're going to email admission results or send it by mail. On the website it says they only notify by mail but then others on here have said they've gotten emails. I can only imagine it's taking them so long because they want to give us both Robertson Fellowships and are planning to notify us by mail! -

Thanks for the heads up. FWIW, I live in DC and haven't gotten anything yet via snail mail, nor have I gotten an email, nor has the status of my application changed on the website. -

I also haven't heard back yet, nothing on the website either. They initially had said they expected to have decisions out by mid-February. For what it's worth, I also applied for the Robertson Foundation for Government Fellowship, for which they said we would be notified early March. -
Also if they don't know what Fletcher (or other top IR programs) is, then aren't they somewhat irrelevant anyway? I mean we're talking about the field you want to go into and those employers, not someone on the street you ask to tell you which school they think is more prestigious, Tufts or Yale. Is this just pure naivete?

I was accepted too and am waiting funding information, my guess is that won't come out for at least another few weeks. I applied early notification so it's a pretty long wait.

I never read about a Dec. 30 deadline, I thought it was Jan 31. My application was in before Dec. 30 but my final letter of rec. didn't come in until Jan. 18., hope it doesn't place me at any disadvantage for admission or funding. -

My app wasn't complete (with all recommendations in) until Jan. 18 I think so I might have to wait a little longer, unless they are really quick with turn around. -
Encouraged to apply for scholarships?
understatement700 replied to MYRNIST's topic in Government Affairs Forum
MYRNIST, did you check with SAIS to see if applicants are eligible for the third fellowship listed (Mason)? When I read the requirements it seemed pretty clear that it was just for current first year students not applicants but then I also don't know why they'd send that info to us. -
I just submitted my application yesterday. Mine was kind of like a policy memo but not quite as formal. I did propose some specific courses of action though. I also briefly mentioned why the issue was of concern to me but didn't try to turn it into personal statement part 2. The prompt is a bit vague, which they perhaps did on purpose to get some variety.

Recommendations for Online Economics Classes
understatement700 replied to wonkish's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I am enrolled for micro and macro online courses at Fort Hayes State Univ. virtual college for spring 2012. The tuition is the same for in-state and out of state students, ($174 per unit so for both 3 unit classes $1,044) a little cheaper than the Berkeley extension classes too and it's 100 percent online. I haven't actually taken the courses yet so I can't comment on them but just throwing the suggestion out there. Also, the classes were full but I called the adviser they assigned me and then talked to the econ. department head and he approved me for the courses so I think they are flexible to work with. -
UC San Diego IR & Pacific Studies
understatement700 replied to msn's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Personally, I think IRPS is really great academically for what I want to focus in: Asia-focused, curriculum seems to have a great mix of policy quant/IR/area studies. I would say though that looking at how much the tuition has increased over the last few years..it's certainly a turn off. Even for California residents it's 22,000 per year! Correct me if I'm wrong but it was about half that 4 - 5 years ago. Also, compared to some schools, having a car is probably much more of a necessity in a place like La Jolla/San Diego. So I'm wondering if it would really end up being that much cheaper than some of the big name east coast policy schools, some of them do tend to toss at least a little aid to students too. Maybe some people with more inside knowledge of IRPS could give more insight into this.- 20 replies

UC San Diego IR & Pacific Studies
understatement700 replied to msn's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I will be applying there, especially for those focusing on Asia or Latin America they have some really great faculty and programs from the looks of it. Also, they tend to be somewhere in the top 10 for rankings, for those who worry about those a lot. I think their curriculum seems really solid and practical at least for me. Their location, however, I think is both a negative and a positive. Awesome weather and San Diego is one of my favorite cities (the city proper, not necessarily La Jolla) but it of course isn't DC so internships during the year are going to be much more limited. Regardless, I still think it's a great school and worth giving it a whirl and seeing how things turn out if your geographical interests are in any of the Pacific Rim countries.- 20 replies

I want to begin preparing my SOP early on and have been looking at the admissions websites of some of the universities I want to apply to. Some of them list a fixed number of words that they want the SOP to be and others don't. Is there a standard rule? How long is too long for these applications that don't list a required length?
