What department? I turned down my offer for painting because I too felt that the program seemed unstable compared to what I did end up going with.

Kinetic Imaging. VCU has produced some talented and successful artists but it felt to me like the structure and small cohort had the potential to be either very rewarding or frustrating and unproductive. In the end I wasn't ready to take that risk, and went with a safer program. Still not sure I made the right call, but hearing that you had a similar experience makes me feel better about that decision

  2. Hope everyone on here had a successful application season. I ended up committing to CalArts, and on the day of the deadline I got an email from VCU about a spot on the waitlist opening up. I was very torn, because their program only accepts 3 students and feels maybe more contemporary (but also maybe less stable) than CalArts. I stuck with my decision because I had already put down a deposit but it's given me a lot of stress. Anyone else on here face challenging choices this year?

I did. Also got rejected. Email came in at 1:00am central time. I'm glad I didn't notice it until this morning lol.

It was really strange of them to wait so long and send out emails so late at night. I did happen to check mine as I was about to go to bed lol. Sorry to hear you got the same result- I hope you have some good offers as well!

  4. Just got rejected from Cranbrook Print Media post-interview. I had already decided my other options were better fits so I'm not too upset. I think they didn't like my question about what resources and relationships the school has with the Detroit or national art scene (coming from NY I said that of the MFA programs I've seen friends go through here one element was open studios/events that attracted curators/gallerists/collectors and I asked if they had anything similar). I didn't particularly like their response (this isn't a finishing school, space is cheap in Detroit to start your own gallery/collective, our alumni have a strong bond). I asked a similar question during a student run tour and they responded with a list of galleries and museums in Detroit that they were prepped with.

These questions can be hard to ask but if you're committing time and money- and especially if you're considering putting down roots in a new city- they're important.

Maybe it would be a good idea to call? Or email? They seem to take very long to reply, but it’s worth a shot. I think it would be a good idea to I nclude your application number in the email. I quickly looked it up, their graduate advisor for DMA is:

    Helen Tran
    Undergraduate & Graduate Student Advisor
    helen.tran@arts.ucla.edu
    (310) 267-4907

They have sent out rejections and acceptances for painting, and I would guess that for photo, interdisciplinary studio, new genres, Sculpture and ceramics.

Thanks! That's good advice. I'll send them an email today

Yes, the limbo is weird and kind of nerve-wracking, but I don't think it'll go beyond March 15. They said all applicants, rejected and accepted, would have an answer by mid-March. Hang in there!

You too! I see you got into CalArts as well, great to have options open while you wait! We'll get through it

I'm sure it went through. I can't see the images either, and I'm in the same place as you: portal just says "submitted", no rejection but also no acceptance. I think it's just that you can't see the images on this portal, all the other ones seemed to show them. During the process I actually emailed the Head of Interdisciplinary Studio to ask if applications were shared between Areas of Study, and apparently yes, mine was actually shared with another Area of Study - so I'm assuming it was correctly submitted, images and all, but without showing them on the portal.

That makes me feel a lot better! I was looking at my calarts and yale apps and both of them show the list of submitted images and ucla shows nothing. It was the first app I submitted so I've been freaking out wondering how I didn't add a portfolio. Hopefully that isn't the case or they would have contacted. Good luck to you! It feels strange sitting here in limbo while other people have gotten decisions

Good luck for you! Maybe some of the departments will delay a little bit~

Thanks. Question for you, when you look at your application proof can you see all the images you submitted? I'm starting to think my portfolio never actually went through...

Guys who applied for UCLA should check your portal now~ you may see the result

Do you have a link for the portal? I've gotten no email and no noticeable response on my application proof page. Very confused

edit: I applied to the DMA program if anyone else is in the same boat

    Waitlisted at Yale ?

I did get into UCLA tho. but idk if I am gonna be able to go because I am having issues with my residency :( ahhh...

Congrats! Which program at UCLA did you get into?

  11. I think I asked this a week or two back but got no response- has anyone heard from the UCLA Digital Media Arts program? I never got anything. Expecting a no at this point but surprised it's taken so long

Did you have an interview before being waitlisted?

No, nothing until the email yesterday. I saw some other departments had already done interviews, so if you're still waiting you may be in the same boat

Not sure what part of Brooklyn that would be apart from Williamsburg which is pricey. Bushwick and other parts of Brooklyn are quite reasonable if you know where to look. Plus NYC has the heavyweight galleries (Chicago tends to be more experimental and raw) as well if you want to engage with that scene.

I am part of the Paradice Palase group in Brooklyn and their studio prices are very very reasonable. https://www.paradicepalase.com/join Not everything in NYC is pay to play until you are bribing the local government for a bar permit ?

Just replied too, completely agree with this. Thanks for the Paradice Palace link. Never heard of them.

    Hey -

I got into SVA and SAIC low res as well - Feeling really torn between the lure of NYC and SAIC's reputation. SVA offered me 25% tuition, and SAIC less - I hope someone responds for both of our sakes now! Where do you live by the by?

Killerdonuts just posted a good reply to this but I would disagree that studio space is unaffordable, depending on your needs and willingness to commute- lots of cheap studio space available in Ridgewood, and even in East Williamsburg/Bushwick neighborhoods (I have a studio here).

Local calls for artists have frequently had application fees- this is normal for larger calls, they're usually low and help keep them from being absolutely flooded. If you're smart you can easily spot the difference between worthwhile calls and vanity shows. I have noticed an uptick in artist-run spaces since covid rent prices hit industrial areas (cheap cheap). Would love to see the return of galleries like Signal. There are also plenty of calls online without fees.

As far as schools, SAIC definitely has a better reputation. I don't know how much low res factors into either of these. Both schools and cities are good, viable options. If you can try to talk with people in the programs or recent alumni

  15. Got waitlisted from VCU Kinetic Imaging today- the email said they are only taking 3-4 students ?
Also regretting my choice to apply for SAIC Art and Tech instead of Printmedia... think I would have had a better shot there. Plenty of options still open though. Everyone else having a good day?

  16. Has anyone heard back from UCLA DMA, VCU Kinetic, or Hunter? Currently waiting on those three and unable to find updates/timelines.

The rest of my list- Cranbrook (upcoming interview), CalArts (upcoming interview), Yale (rejected), SAIC (rejected)
