hi all, was just accepted to BU for fiction. I received a phone call from Leslie Epstein this morning. I'm in shock! I was not expecting this after getting so many rejections. Anyone else attending? 
 
edit: also, to the person who said anyone rejected from NYU hasn't the slightest idea what literary fiction is (and recommended community college), go back under your bridge. I was rejected from NYU!

Rejection from BU today. Best of luck to all of you guys. This cycle is over for me and I'm trying again next year unless I become a millionaire and even maybe then.

Dude same. I don't think I really need my answer from CU, I've made my decision. When a program feels like it crafted for you and how you write and work and you connect to faculty and the curriculum, then the decision becomes much easier.

BU rejection came in! Honestly super relieved because I am just falling in love with another program and didn’t want to have to make a difficult decision. 
 
Anybody got good news? 

Holy crap y'all...I just got accepted at New Orleans. Literal crickets from them and then boom. (Ydrl...omg) and all my oldies and besties on here...Hell yeah they take us! NEVER quit.

If you are referring to my post-which I think you are, explain please. I would think (and I am speculating you are right-but we all seem to be doing that on here) that a little life experience does bring something to the table. Not just age, but milestones, work, etc. I would hope that MFA programs would want a diverse group of writers to work with. I hope I end up in a program that supports diversity and a mentality that learning and writing is for a lifetime. How do they not care about experience? Please share.

That is simply not true. I'm rejected by NYU for one, and possibly Columbia as well? Don't let that mess with your head!!! Congratulations on your acceptance! 

It was in the morning, which must be late night for the professor. it was just funny because I almost fell out of my bed when the phone rang.

“Amazon delivery person” I love this. ? Would totally be me too, to be completely honest. 

I got a call yesterday. I thought it was the Amazon delivery person and I had just woken up so I didn't even understand much.  But the professor was kind and gave me his email id so I wrote to him and apologised. I am supposed to call him this weekend. I can ask him if you'd like me to. 

This is my second year applying! Last year I applied to 7 programs, but only got into one with no funding. I think rather than age, I find that what programs really want to see is experience in the field and a certain level of dedication. 

To add on, I’m in my 20s and out of 14 applications, I received no acceptances from US schools so I don’t think age is the issue (at least in my case! ?)

I’m still waiting for a few but very possibly Brooklyn College ?

I would say workshops or writing groups? You might have to do some digging for those though. Either that or find writers through the “literary sphere” of Twitter and see who you’d like the swap work with etc. So far it’s worked for me! 

I’ll try it! I’d say I’m terrible at writing romantic scenes though.?

I also obsessively check the schools that I'm waiting on and know there will be nothing in them. I try to only check them once a day...but sometimes I do it almost out of habit when I sit in front of my computer so I lost count ? 
I'm likely to decline my The New School offer so if they do have a waitlist, I hope you're on it and can benefit from it! I truly love the spirit of TNS (I often listen to lectures offered by their Center of Public Scholarship) and my friend who attended the program (fiction) also speaks highly of her experience there. I love the neighborhood. I am turning it down mainly for financial reasons as well as the larger size of the cohort. Wishing you the best! 

That’s very kind of you! And oh dear ? If I did that, I think my mom would question my sanity, and my grandmother would disown me. They’re still quite traditional-minded so it would be quite the cultural shock! They’d probably stop listening halfway through and walk out of the room to be completely honest ?

and damnit they need to get their shit together. NYU and Columbia (I don't mean to single them out for any other reason) both have such a weird process of notifying the applicants. A call today, another call tomorrow; some e-mails, some portal changes. Like, why? At least NYU only had one person calling. Columbia's process seems even more nebulous.

Thanks, and I'm glad you made this point about your feelings. There is a girl that sits behind me in one of my writing classes (never says a word, not sure where she is from) and reading that....it's a- you could be her feeling...So I plan to reach out to her next week to make sure she doesn't feel this way too. As far as getting over fear of writing/judgement...ha, here's what I did. I wrote a really dirty romance scene and then read it to my mom. OMG...but if you can do THAT...you can get over writing fear and embarrassment real quick.
