  1. Ah yes, the fellow torontonians who can't drive! i'm thinking about bike friendliness, too. I think at both my perspective schools there are pluses and minuses. A big minus to Ithaca is all those hills, though in general it's more bike friendly (and yet, when I want to escape, I'll need a car!)
  2. I am so sorry for derailing it! But wasn't it so much fun?!
  3. come to think of it, i know some hotties from chapel hill--only a car ride away from durham!
  4. I once gave my heart to a southern boy... [cue romantic montage] Chicago definitely has more hotties. Go there! Besides, Chicago's program seems like it's really immersed in cultural theory. It seems very *in touch* and *cutting-edge* Durham definitely does not have many hotties! Believe me. I've been! I've looked!
  5. I think the most important question is, was the Mercutio of the L-train a cute indie boy from Brooklyn? Could I have further collapsed the distance between the stage and audience by attempting to resuscitate him? I am just kidding. Let's get back to more serious matters.
  6. Hedgerows, you need to get on the cutie indie boy make out train (assuming you are a straight female, but even so!) I intend to get on that train in Toronto this summer. I have a lot of work to do to keep me satisfied for the next seven years before I enter the academic convent! MrBrooklyn meet Hedgerows.
  7. haha yes. you don't have to ask for permission. of course!
  8. Nope, it was uOttawa. I don't know if McGill is officially a bilingual university, though my guess is that it's not. I've been to Montreal many times. I have many friends that live there. You certainly don't need to know French to live and study in Montreal. It's very English. But if you want to find a job as an English speaker it's a bit hard: I have a handful of very smart and capable English friends that work at a burger joint (it's the best they can do!)

  10. I definitely learned a lot from choosing schools for undergrad. I went to a particular school because it was bilingual and I wanted to continue studying French. I did not take into consideration quality of life issues. My first night in the city, I knew I'd chosen the wrong school. I also didn't end up studying French because I couldn't understand Quebecois. It took me two years to transfer but it was the best decision I made. Ergo: quality of life is really important. Don't go to a school because you want something very paritcular out of it--in my case, the thing I wanted I never actually did.
  11. I think we could be such good friends, hedgerows! that is such a hilarious and (awesomely) superficial thing, and I'd probably base my decision on something similar. I definitely think my decision will come down to something that can't be quantified. Or as my 40 year old co-worker said "My money is on Rutgers. She doesn't know it yet, but she's going to choose it so she can make out with cute indie boys in Brooklyn."
  12. or maybe it's just Renaissance people who are most forgiving! they know the power of language
  13. Really, don't worry about typos. I had two writing samples--one that I was using for MA programs and one that I was using for PhD programs--and due to copying and pasting I left the name of the wrong sample in for 5 of my PhD applications. I got into Cornell and Rutgers regardless (and Chicago MA). I also found some small typos in my sample (stuff like "an" instead of "and"). Doesn't matter.
  14. thanks, bfat! Anything helps!
  15. Anyone know anything about Ithaca, apart from the fact that it's "beautiful"? Also, anyone know anything about Cornell's program in terms of general enviornment, relations between students and faculty, dynmatics, etc?
  16. congrats! taco bell, that's quite depressing.
  17. dude, i did not even make a percentile for math. I DID NOT MAKE A PERCENTILE!
  18. The call was at 9:00 pm from a professor in my field.
  19. I got a call last night, too! I am Renaissance. Message me if you want to chat or ask anything. My stats are awful. AWFUL. so, yay!
  20. haha. I hear this is true. As a Canadian, who studied in Canada, and who knows a bit about PhDs here, I'd say the thing you want to look out for is reputation. I think the only schools worth looking into are probably UBC and Toronto. If you are satisfied with teaching at small schools in Canada with relatively motivated and hard workings students (that sounds pretty great) then getting a PhD there is a good idea. The drawback, not a lot of teaching opportunities while you're doing your degree. The good thing, you finish a lot faster. I am not sure about UBC, but Toronto has a direct entry. Mostly, though, you need a masters before you can go into doctoral work. Sometimes Toronto will offer you a direct entry position even without a masters. I think they admit only a certain number of international applicants. I've been told Canadian students take undergrad a bit more seriously. I don't know about that, though. There are motivated and unmotivated people everywhere. But we don't have the same frat, football or party culture.
  21. Hm, that's good to know! I keep being told the same thing. My scores are pretty awful, yet I'm being encouraged by my advisers to apply to top schools nonetheless. None of them seem worried. But Gradcafe people make me worried.
  22. I don't understand why people are suggesting there is a difference between the October tests and the November tests, isn't it all a matter of perception? What am I missing here? I took the October test (it was my second time) and felt it was a lot easier than anything I came across before. Besides, there are probably about a half dozen or so tests circulating.
  23. Just out of curiosity. What's the lowest scores anyone knows of for people who've gotten into decent PhD programs for English? General or Subject. Discuss!
