I didn’t say “acing” it!! ?

Hey now, I never said what my percentiles were ? I’d call 80’s nailing it.

So, you have to take into consideration that the guide was written by two students as they were going through their admissions processes— and what this means, by proxy, is you’re not really getting a good idea of how faculty see things. For example, the talking to phd students advice is kind of wishy-washy. However, talks with faculty are almost always useful— assuming you contacted back in the summer. And if you those faculty blew you off, well, that’s a really useful data point for your own admissions decisions. GRE Scores? For better or worse, they are the only standardized metric. Don’t let them discourage you, but they are more than a solely a cutoff. Letters of Recc requests? Guide says to ask 2-3 months in advance. Want good letters? Do it 6 months in advance, and if anyone remotely hesitates, you’ve got time to select others. It’ll also help you give them materials to write good letters with. It was incredibly helpful that my recommenders got a copy of the exact CV I was going to submit with apps, for example. This is likely an exaggeration on my part, but I kind of wish the guide didn’t deify faculty members so much. They’re people. While you’re not equals right now… you’re asking them to train you to stand next to them or exceed them. That’s what research is about. You’re going to take our current knowledge and make it deeper/richer. Take strength and pride from that. Some great parts about the guide is it really gives you the scope of the timeline needed to fully target applications. I finished early, but only because I started writing my SOP’s back in August. It just takes that long to go through dozens of faculty CV’s and read their works. The stuff in the guide about apprenticeship vs. entrepreneurial programs? Absolute gold. The interview questions? Gold. The sample materials (the submitted SOP’s and CV’s)… useful-ish. Take into consideration those folks are the truly star-studded applicants. Overall, it’s a useful tool. I would love to help them write an updated version once we all complete our degrees.

It’s equal parts useful and misleading, tbh.

Welcome to the thread! Great quant background for accounting.

Im torn on if I should follow y’all’s lead and post a list of schools as a signature. It’s a bit revealing vs the anonymity forums provide.

Northwestern, Wharton, and Columbia are the top. Next in line, although it sounds weird, is probably Arizona State.

He’s an absolute trooper. We got married after the Supreme Court made it legal, but, we’ve been together 10 years now. Since children aren’t a goal that can happen naturally, he’s fine with the move. It helps that he’ll end his job here after completing licensure (he’s in construction), so, any move will coincide with starting a new chapter in his career. All in all, the timing worked and he just wants me to be happy. He will be putting his thumb on the U WA scale if it sends an acceptance our way, though. His family’s nearby.

I see it now, almost all of your choices sans Cornell are metro or at least big town. Considering that I’m Lgbt and married, I had a similar set of problems considering my geography as well. It’s why Kelley, U Minn, OSU and a few others turned into hard no’s.

For what it’s worth, I believe a ton of this process self-selects. I chickened out of Stanford’s app last minute. Ie my recommenders were all submitted and I couldn’t justify the fee for my perceived low chance. Gre is also a self-select. You have to be in the pool of people remotely interested in taking it, and then you percentile off those people. And clearly, you self-selected enough to be looking up resources and creating threads like this one. I think you’ll be fine.

Do what I do, “hey Siri, what’s 60 days from now?” Because that’s when we’ll have interviews and rejections.

Depends on the University. Columbia’s “Personal Essay” is identical to what most call Statement of Purpose, for example.

Check your dms, but this might illuminate things: https://gradschool.duke.edu/about/statistics/all-departments-phd-and-masters-admissions-and-enrollment-statistics Sort by degree, phd, and business admin under “program.” And yes, I know it’s April’s stats but look at the trend.

Well make sure you at least enter your recommenders as soon as you can; those due dates mean *everything* needs to be submitted. Every system I used let me ping my recommenders immediately. Also, I’ve heard that so far this year, apps are unusually quiet.

Time for a little victory dance, everybody’s done. Well, minus a few reco’s. But my part’s finished. godspeed to you both.
-
If I may ask a question, how did both of you handle your school selection with regards to research fit? For me, I basically looked at the top 50 and went through everyone’s CV’s. Out of that process, a little less than half were left. I chose not to apply to any of those that weren’t much of a fit… even if they offered me app fee waivers via email or similar.

^ good luck. For me, I thought the template stage was the 3/4 done point. It turned out to be the 1/4 done point and I burned an extra month customizing. Hah! edit: 19 dropped to 17 after some introspection and chickened out at the credit-card submit stage.
-
I did for several schools; but it’s not a guaranteed thing to get to talk to them. They’re busy people, after all. I’ve got 6 submitted and the rest should be done by the evening of the first, which will give my recommenders a month to submit their forms. edit: how are yours coming along?
-
It’s funny how I thought I’d wind up applying across the country, but in reality, most of what I wanted to study is located in New England/East Coast anyways. My background, loosely based on yours: I’m a little on the older side. Practiced consulting for the better part of the 2010’s. Aced the GRE. A few significant educational achievements and built a few world-first pieces of technology. I’m hoping to research phenomena that are *almost* purely sociological/poli sci— I’m trying to better understand how our political and social beliefs impact our organizations and their strategic decision making.

Phew. I didn’t want to be the one to say “that’s high hopes for just 3…” I’m on the cusp of finishing my (19!) apps. It’s really amazing how “just a few more” bleed through the cracks at the end.
-
^ just 3? From the other thread, I’m applying for macro OB/OT this year to the full the gamut of NE schools and a few others.

I’m doing the gamut of NE schools and a couple west coasters for Macro OT/OB.
