  1. In which case a UK PhD wouldn't be so bad, especially as the overwhelming majority of people are done within 3-4 years. I'm not sure when it comes to Canada. I think UBC, Toronto and McGill can place their students well, but others will be able to offer better advice. Generally though a US PhD is undoubtedly best for the US market..
  2. Sorry, I just remembered much of the ESRC funding is not available to international students (UK/EU only), which may limit you to institutional funding. PhD funding in the UK is a real muddle... one of the reasons I'm looking to the US. Not to mention that it's harder to get a job in the US with a UK PhD. There is at least one positive, the general lack of application fees Good luck with the two places you're waiting for.. fingers crossed.
  3. For a PhD? If so the deadline for funding from the main government sponsored source (ESRC) has passed and this is the primary source of funding. Although there are still some from a variety of sources from within individual universities. This website (jobs.ac.uk) is relatively good for finding opportunities, but bear in mind funding from the universities themselves is much less common in the UK. For a Masters? With the exception of Oxbridge and St Andrews almost everywhere is still accepting applications. Be aware though that funding for Masters students is even rarer than in the US and the majority of students are unfunded (if not funded by a 1+3 ESRC scholarship).
  4. As Qeta mentioned Coursera here's a quick link to upcoming stats courses https://www.coursera.org/courses?orderby=upcoming&lngs=en&cats=stats
  5. If you're going mad waiting for results you can get a snapshot of the generally awful quality of the Scottish independence debate right now here http://news.stv.tv/scotland/109173-watch-a-live-stream-of-scotland-tonight-scotlands-current-affairs-show/. I was planning on applying for this fall, but turns out I'll be in Scotland to vote after all.. It's going to be a long seven months!
  6. Aye, that's it, thanks! An up to date wiki (or similar) with full cohort placement details including principle advisor & subfield would be a good resource. Something like this would be extremely useful, especially if it was a requirement for programs like the April 15th deadline. Alas it's in the interests of many programs to obfuscate when it comes to placement.
  7. I feels like there's an open placement project somewhere which aims to get full placement data from Poli Sci depts and publish them online. This strikes me as perhaps more valuable given the influence of individual advisors and the like..
  8. I feel like Nexon posted on the Duck last year that there was only one, maybe two, funded IR slots at Georgetown (per cycle). *awaits gif*
  9. The future inhabitants of PSR!
  10. After all the work people put into this process it can probably be a little maddening to infer that it's down to luck. I'm reminded of the (quant happy) article on graduate admissions that someone posted where the author mentioned that you could almost throw the top 50 applicant's files down the stairs and just randomly admit half of them. It's undeniable that there's an element of chance, but that doesn't mean you can't push the odds a tad more in your favour or that by getting in you haven't achieved something great
  11. Agreed *whistles and waits for forum discount code*
  12. I remember looking at Cal-tech not long after I began considering the possibility of US PhDs.. I can still remember my horror when I looked at the math classes they would like applicants to have done!
  13. Congratulations! I believe being accepted into a college is merely a formality although you may not get your first choice.
  14. Non-scary link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8Pq4TjvfqRjQV9zaE05akh5ZUk/edit?usp=sharing EDIT: Interesting snippet regarding their grad program.. aiming to drop from ~93 students to ~80 "The unexpectedly high yield of acceptances to our offers for fall 2013 has stretched our resources to the breaking point and we hope to reduce new enrollments in fall 2014 by one‐third or more. A total of 21 new students enrolled in fall 2014; we need to keep this below 14 for 2015 and the next few years."
  15. Please don't tell me there are schools like that in America..
  16. Rochester and NYU were the ones that struck me as particularly quantitatively focused. Mixed methods means different things to different people.. coming from the UK I'm sure my conception of this is more qualitative than a Rochester grad
  17. I misread this as 'gin o'clock..'
  18. I don't know.. this is probably kinder and swifter than an acceptance sans funding
  19. For 2 and 3 have a quick look round and a wee search of the forum. There have been a few threads on these topics already Although I think broadly you won't do any harm trying to contact faculty members, but don't be offended if they don't reply.. it's not necessary for admission. I think there have been a few people here who have been accepted second time round, but they'll likely have worked on as many aspects of their application as possible. BFB described elsewhere how at OSU a low GRE score costs them a waiver and they only have a certain number they can use.. which could certainly harm your application if you're borderline. Good luck though, it's not all about GRE scores and you still have some schools to hear back from!
  20. *Waves* Good luck to the theorists (and everyone else of course.) Just popping in to wish you all good luck, my plans to apply were sadly derailed by my finances.. but next year! Are there rumours that Katzenstein might retire? I guess he's earned it, but then again some academics like to keep on going..
  21. Europe..
  22. From what I gather they are relatively accurate. If you use the search box there's been some discussion of their tests in the past.
  23. I don't know what you want to put yourself through this, you've applied! There is nothing for you to do now but try and distract yourself and get on with life while you wait to find out
  24. I think this is a problem faced by many people, let the advice out
  25. It takes 5 minutes to change, so why not? Although I can imagine the groans as international students often don't have a GPA
