  1. Emailing the department you're interested in might be best. but, if it helps, very few Masters applicants apply before Christmas.
  2. Where did you come from, Cotton-Eye Joe?

  3. One quick thing - do you need/have you done the TOEFL test? If it's all fine then by all means go for it and get those GRE scores sent off pronto.
  4. I fear our US contingent is off somewhere gorging themselves on turkey, so I fear you'll have to make do with another aspiring PhD student for the moment! First off... Are you able to write a good personal statement, get referees and polish your writing sample within the next 5 days for Stanford or two and a half weeks for the rest? I think that would be very difficult given how late you've left it. Do have a good idea of your research interests and people you want to work with? It looks like you'd probably have a reasonable/good chance with your background, but from watching the last cycle it would appear that nothing should be taken for granted when applying for a PhD. Others will be able to offer better advice, but I would be wary of investing so much money and then rushing through the applications in two weeks. Good luck with your decision
  5. Definite. Although they had need given I'm applying to 15 places. Bound to spot some hideous typo in statement #15 that is in them all.. Oh well!
  6. Fuzzy is (always) right . The UK HE sector is a bit odd at times. ~1/8th of Britain - for as long as Scotland is still there - get 4 years degrees . It's like we deliberately want to confuse people!
  7. First application in. I think...
  8. First of all you need to relax. This is a stressful process and for those of us not brimming with confidence one that can leave you racked with doubt. Try not to worry about what your referees may think of you, I'm sure they want you to succeed. By all means apply to a few more lower ranked schools if they are a good fit for you and it's possible financially, but it sounds like you've applied to a reasonable range of places.
  9. You want a the Government Affairs forum. I can think of few professional style degrees in Europe in the vein of an MIA. Off the top of my head I can only think of the Blatnavik School of Government (Oxford) and IHEID, but you might have more luck in the right forum.
  10. Hey, I'm in the same position as you. Unfortunately most are gated, but you can often find copies of more popular articles via Google & Google Scholar. Otherwise ask people you know still at University, twitter or even the authors. Check if any local libraries have subscriptions to journals too. Luckily for me the National Library of Scotland gives me digital access to *most* journals. You could potentially join APSA which would give you access to APSR, PoP and a few others.
  11. So you're looking for a terminal masters program? If so, Government affairs is probably the forum you want.
  12. Hop over to the Government Affairs forum as, unless you want to get a PhD, you're in the wrong forum Good luck!
  13. Looking up some more reading for POIs and have seen some immensely long CVs. Longest I've seen (so far) is 32 pages. I feel almost spoiled if they have a Google Scholar account
  14. So it's co-authored? I would be very wary of submitting something that was co-authored.. How do the departments know what part you played in the process and generally how much of it is your work? You say there's no time to write something else, but surely you wrote other peices of work during your undergraduate. I might be wrong with my suspicion of co-authored pieces (I'm in the same place as you after all) but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm off
  15. Thanks! That's largely what I imagined/gleaned from the internet. It's good to know I'm not on the wrong tracks! Now back to fretting about whether I'll gain admission! Luckily Political Science is a mile away from being near any sensitive technology I remember my 19 year old self going down to the embassy and being totally terrified.. several hours of waiting and a brief friendly conversation
  16. Hi Everybody, A rather speculative question (since I'm only just finishing my applications), but I was wondering how long it takes to get a visa if accepted to a PhD program in February/March/April? I'm looking at going travelling for several months in the US before - hopefully - starting a program, but having got a student visa in the past (study abroad) I know that they need your passport and then post it back to you with the visa. Just interested in hearing your experiences.. I don't want to go planning to go off to the US in June if I need to be in London in July for a Visa! Thanks for any help
  17. Making sure all my transcripts have been sent. Got to love those universities that accept online submissions, less keen on the university-that-shall-not-be-named that demands two official transcripts! Still awfully quiet in here...
  18. If you applied by midnight last night.. spooky!
  19. I notice some people upload where they're applying to their signatures and then remove them later.. any idea why? Should I really care that people *could* find out who I am and where I'm applying?

It's a personal choice. I think anyone who wanted to could probably figure out who I am. I'm not saying anything here I wouldn't say publicly. If you aren't terribly worried about being identified and how it might impact your online presence, do what you want.

Could be for more privacy/anonymity,especially from adcoms or future colleagues. Or maybe they don't want others to consider applying to the same schools. Maybe someone doesn't know a program exists until they see it on your signature and they decide to apply too.

I just did this... I did it because I know how easy it is to piece together information about people. I realized that listing the programs made me far less anonymous. Why stay anonymous? Because I've used these forums as a place to vent my feelings and I can't say for sure how much of that I'd want attributed to my real person. Also, I don't want my classmates to find me on here, lol

  20. 15 online applications created.. pwooowh. My poor referees
  21. Try the GRE forum to get a better idea of timelines, it can be pretty variable. November 11th should be fine, but I'd make doubly sure if I were you.
  22. I'm pretty sure that at most places the letter themselves need to be submitted by the deadline. A few schools allow you a couple of weeks leeway (OSU for example), but it's by no means uniform.
  23. Probably Alas I doubt I'll get a 'We don't *do* math in the UK' free pass for my GRE .
  24. Political Theory applicants probably have a bit more leeway with their Q scores and that could partially explain it. Although it seems plenty of theorists do well on both sections anyway.
  25. I fear I'm not qualified to comment, but have a look for the Profile/SoP/Results threads to get an idea of what people have written. Here's the the 2012 version, but there's one for each of the last few years. How is everybody else doing?
