Just briefly, but for US PhD programs it's frequently said that you should only attend a PhD program if they offer you full funding (tuition + stipend) and this only widens the gap in cost vs UK. Which is unfortunate, because I'd say you could find more people to work with there.. send you off to Birkbeck and you'd certainly be all right

To begin with you're going to have to learn to be a wee bit more diplomatic when it comes to elucidating your ideas about research! However, I can certainly see why you're frustrated given your current circumstances. I had the opposite happen at my university in the UK. My advisor couldn't help me in the slightest with quantitative research - only they were required to supervise.. The average UK university sounds like it could be a better fit for your interests and they certainly wouldn't hinder you should you wish to work in the UK. As has already been said to you though a US PhD is king if you want to work there. Unfortunately the major stumbling block if you wanted to come to the UK is likely to be that most scholarships - even if they include living expenses - won't cover the difference between UK/EU fees and international fees. At most places that would be £8,500 per year. If I were you I would keep an open mind with regards to US programs and seek out schools that are more friendly to diverse methodological approaches. The New School has been mentioned, but there are clusters of scholars elsewhere who you could perhaps work with.

Happy to be proved wrong . Nice to see they put some of the money they collect from their (outrageously high) Masters programs to good use!

I looked briefly in the summer and think there was reference to 'a number' of £18000 MRes/PhD scholarships being available, but was under the impression that nothing was guaranteed. Still hopefully they come through for you! I'm biased though. I live here and decided not to apply to any UK PhD programs

I guess the first question is funding?
-
Fingers crossed for you though. Made beer yesterday, so my cupboard smells amazing..

Also on the UVa boat. Hate to be a misery guts, but it's either a long wait list (with us all on it) or they just have a particular long/cruel/silly admissions process. I never get over how much more disturbing things like this are when you read it in British English..

Working out TAMUs annual required fees and College Station is getting less attractive. Over $2000 per annum?!
-
I keep forgetting everyone's positions... are you on the waitlist there?
-
Phew. Well done

Ah, I didn't notice that. I can only see one rejection on the page?

Nothing here, but it seems they didn't notify many people until April in previous years

Is it just me or does a lot of the housing in BCS just look quite grim? Looking for somewhere that would allow me to cycle to the department. I'd be basically next door to the Bush Presidential Library, which is about as far into the 'West Campus' as you can get.

*waves* Me too, although waiting for funding. Not sure if I'll end up going, but sifting through the thread to glean some information. Looks like quite a nice place to live really.

One of my offers involves working 20 hours a week as an RA for one or two Professors. As I've never worked with or for a faculty member before so I'd be grateful to hear anyone's experience as working as a Research Assistant. I'm aware that the work done and environment varies greatly depending on who you're working with. It certainly seems like a better offer than TAing half time, but I'm just a little bit nervous at the prospect! EDIT: Hopefully I put this in the right forum. From what I gather from existing PhD students at the program if you're lucky you'll work on research together the aim of co-authoring. Although again this seems to vary greatly.

Not me, but someone I follow on twitter has gotten in. Congrats to whoever it is for the first acceptance

Academia.edu is great/annoying. Someone clicked through from my CV at the start of the month via the applyweb/Penn system which has the URL admit.applyweb.com.. luckily I didn't see it at the time! I'm pessimistic by nature, but it would seem like our heads our on the chopping block.. from a look at the results page they don't seem to really do wait-lists.

Waiting for Cornell and a few likely rejections (UPenn)..
-
Yeah, I applied to a pretty wide range of schools when it comes to ranking from about ~5 all the way to ~40, but tried to avoid those where funding was too low or ridiculously scarce.
-
Accepted at Syracuse (yay), but on the waitlist for funding (boo). Waitlist for funding seems to be a new thing for them as the website states all admitted students are offered funding

Rejected from Indiana. Applying to 14 schools has lead to a lot of rejections.. but it's amazing how just one acceptance takes the sting out of all the other rejections Pretty much just waiting on Cornell and UPenn. If I hear nothing from those two then I'll be off to Texas! Best use the next few months to work on my R skills...
