  1. ? Anyone interviewing for Boston University Painting-- feel free to message me with any questions that you might have. I am a current student and might actually be in your interview.
  2. Hey everyone, just hopping on here real quick as someone who has gone through this process twice already.. if you are considering UMass Amherst (fully funded with TA stipend and free health insurance) do your research and reach out to as many current students and faculty as possible. I began last year with a cohort of 7, and half of us left before the year was over to transfer elsewhere. It seems like a good fit for someone who is fine with a place that feels like a high school art program at a private school (nice facilities but boring/strict faculty). If you're looking for a cutting edge environment, it's not going to be there.
  3. This happened to me last year.. I started at UMass Amherst because the full ride/stipend/insurance was too good to pass up. When I got there I realized that the program was in complete shambles, so I left after 3 weeks. They didn't really give me a hard time or guilt me about funding. I had a feeling that this may happen, so I immediately emailed the school that was my 1st choice originally seeing if I could transfer ASAP. It turned out that they did not accept spring semester transfers, and that I had to reapply with everyone else this year. Luckily they were very nice and understanding, so I will be starting at BU Painting in the fall. Some schools will accept spring semester transfers, but not many. You are totally allowed to apply to other schools as a full-time student! I don't know if I would advise asking current faculty for recommendations since it might cause some tension, but nothing says you can't change your mind.
  4. I think it’s something that you have to consider before the applications process. Unfortunately it’s just something that will be reflected in the list of schools you apply to and there is no way around it. I would have loved to apply to a longer list of competitive schools, but I knew that even if I applied to RISD and Columbia etc. there would just be no chance in hell that I could afford that so I wanted to avoid the double disappointment. There are a lot of funded schools, and some good private schools that offer a bunch of aid, so it’s helpful to have a well rounded group of schools that will give you a range of financial situations. It’s heartbreaking to have been admitted to your dream school and not being able to take the plunge.. but it just seems to be a big consideration to make prior.
  5. My Tyler acceptance came in the third week of March last year, so it seems likely that they’re going to be on the later side again..
  6. If it makes a difference to you, I was in this exact situation last year (full ride+stipend+insurance vs. 80% scholarship) and I picked the full ride over my top choice because I am an extremely frugal person. I ended up leaving almost immediately because it was clear that I would not thrive at that school for a number of reasons. It actually ended up being more expensive to have such a bumpy ride of a gap year, than it would have to just suck up the tuition cost and go to my top choice. I can’t say that the same would happen to you, but really consider what you want out of your education and consider how you’ll get there. 70% is a great scholarship if you can make it work!
  7. Boston University Painting just sent over acceptances
  8. This being said, if you know which school you are ultimately going to attend and are ready to accept.. don’t wait until April! The earlier that schools can lock in their first round of acceptances, the faster they can accept people on the waitlist.
  9. A solid amount of people definitely get accepted off of the waitlist! If one person is accepted to 5 schools, they can still only pick one and end up leaving an open slot at four schools. Multiply that by everyone who has been accepted to multiple programs!
  10. I think I'm the only one on here applying to boston university (painting and sculpture) so far on the forum, but to anyone else just reading our posts.. the sculpture department said they are meeting this Wednesday to discuss finalists-- and last year both painting and sculpture decisions came out on 3/8.
  11. Did anyone else interview with Boston University Painting? I'm curious if Josephine was conducting all of the interviews, or if anyone met with Lucy Kim instead. I think my interview went as well as it could have considering I am a very multidisciplinary painting/sculpture/print/photo hybrid and Josephine is a very "capital P" Painter. I am curious if anyone got to talk with Lucy, since she has a much broader approach to painting that is more intertwined with sculpture and similar to me. She made a point at the open house to stress that their program accepts all kinds of points of view on painting, but my interview with Josephine was very much from a capital P perspective of painting with niche references that was veryyyyyyy far from where my head is at.
  12. Don't be afraid to politely counter an offer! If you get a better offer from your second or third choice, you can always craft a thoughtful email saying that you really want to attend School A, but School B offered you X amount more and that even though School A is your top choice, you are thoroughly assessing your options. Most schools have wiggle room for candidates that they really want and may be able to add a bit more money to your package. Last year I was able to get a 50% scholarship up to 80% just by sending an email. The worst they can say is no! They may ask for proof of your offer, so don't exaggerate or make anything up, just be honest and open to their response
  13. Does anyone from last year know what the rejection timeline for VCU was? Starting to worry after that apparent interview email thread.
  14. I interviewed with Tyler sculpture last year and it was pretty intense. Be prepared to be grilled about the conceptual reasons for pretty every component of your practice from material choice to visual content. I ran long with my presentation so have a clock
  15. I don't think that it's a problem to have different mediums and a variety of different work as long as it still looks like it was done by the same hand. I think that it is good to show that you are constantly thinking and expanding and showing, but they might be hesitant to pick someone who is truly all over the place. I think that if you can group the work in a way that shows a trajectory or overall narrative in the way that the work shifts between materials then that would be the best way for the review panel to understand how you got from point A to point B.
  16. They extended the deadline last year, so you could probably do some digging on the 2021 forum to get a better idea of their interview timeline
  17. Hmm, now I'm a bit confused (I'm so sorry I'm not sure if that is 2020 or 20 years out)! Just by the fact that you mentioned your thesis, it sounded like you were fresh out of school meaning maybe they think you have fantastic potential but just need some time to develop your practice outside of the guided structure of school. But if you have been out of school for 20 years, I'm curious how much of your portfolio was from the last 3 years like most schools request.
  18. May I ask how many years you have been out of your undergraduate degree?
  19. I would reach out to some current students if you can, they had a pretty rough start to the semester so that would definitely be a school where some current student input would be helpful. A few people were also planning on leaving, so definitely do a lot of your own research to see if you’d be happy there!
  20. What specific science based subjects I would be researching and how I would incorporate it into my practice was definitely one that stuck out to me.
  21. My UMass Amherst interview last year was a bit rigid, mostly talking about academic and research interests though that really does seem to be dependent on who your interview is with. People from my cohort had very different interview vibes depending on who was conducting it. I’d say have a broad approach prepared for whether it skews more toward artistic practice or academic/pedagogical placement etc. I enrolled at UMass and was there for a few weeks so if you have any specific questions let me know!
  22. People aren't always saying that they are bad universities when they speak out against a program at its current stance. The school as a whole is completely different than the current arrangement of faculty and administration members that are stewards of the institution at that particular time. Schools can be heavily influenced by one chair or professor, so if they leave and someone new comes in, the program can shift drastically without anyone having much say in that overall influence. I understand the desire for more information, but in all honesty covid pretty much eviscerated most programs and they are all currently finding their footing. A program that was really strong three years ago, may be entirely different right now. I worked at an art school during covid, and started an mfa program last year, and it is all basically the same story of everyone was fired and now we are starting from scratch in a confusing and unproductive way. It doesn't mean they're "bad" schools, it just means that the current state of the program is crisis. My one friend even graduated from Yale in 2020 and advised me against applying because she was disheartened by their handle on the pandemic and felt like it was a waste of money etc. Schools that are finding their footing without an established set of chairs and faculty are just more of a gamble, so people are just giving others a heads up that the shiny marketing on the outside is not matching up with the internal chaos. Everyone on here has the full capacity to message current and former students to check up on the status of their programs. I don't think anyone has to reveal their identity, but if you're really concerned about what you read on here about a school, try and contact a current student for some info!
  23. Did anyone on here interview with Boston University's painting program last year? Obviously may be a bit different with Josephine on sabbatical-- but I am curious what the vibes were like since my interview with their sculpture department last year was so wonderfully informal.
  24. Just heard from Boston University Painting for an interview
