I looked back and in 2020, Yale responded January 28th, and in 2021 it was February 6th. Since they extended the deadline this year, it may be later (but hopefully not!)

The biggest mistake I made last year during my interviews was trying to please them in order to gain acceptance. I was so focused on saying what I knew they wanted to hear to get in, that I didn't allow myself to interview THEM to see if the school would actually be a good fit for me. If this is your first time around, it's better to be rejected after a really honest and open back and forth dialogue where both parties learn that they don't click the right way, instead of dancing around the interview in order to be who they want you to be. It's so easy to be shy and scared and nervous and let them interview you, but if you are applying to multiple schools-- the reality is that you have the power to grill them also to see if they offer what you need to succeed in your program.

If I remember correctly, the majority of schools last year sent out interview requests after Yale did which was the 6th of February or something close to that-- so if you're stressing out that people are hearing back from schools this early, it's honestly pretty uncommon until February. Also different majors from the same school are known to send out requests at different speeds, so if someone hears back from your school but with a different concentration it doesn't mean that you won't hear back!

This very much lightened my mood and made me laugh, so thank you for that So glad to have helped, it's such a bummer when their clunky technology makes it extra difficult to apply.

Also double check that your SlideRoom account is linked to your regular email, or make sure to check the one that it is linked to as frequently! Last year I forgot I had mine connected to my undergrad email account, and had a surprise interview request in that inbox.

Also if you took one or two classes at other schools-- even if they appear on the transcript from where you graduated from! I almost missed Tyler's deadline last year because they requested an official transcript from the community college that I took a summer COMP class from on the last day.

I'm in the exact same boat as you-- it's definitely a funny place to be (saving money for grad school= forgoing studio space/making big work). I applied to sculpture programs last year with an almost entirely paint/print based portfolio and no one gave me a hard time about it. I was even told at one that I had the strongest portfolio out of all of the applicants who applied with legit sculpture.. I think it really just comes down to what you want to study. If you actually do want to apply for sculpture, but are hesitant only because of the content of your portfolio, I think there are ways around this in your statement and interviews. If you want to DM me and chat further I can share some of my experience from last year. I am applying to a mix of photography, painting/print, and sculpture programs this year, so it's really just based on where you think your work would grow the most. They have to understand how fluid sculpture and painting can be, and if they don't.. then it's not going to be the program for you!

I was going to apply to Rutgers until I read this question and immediately quit the application. It really rubbed me the wrong way and just projected the school as somewhere I wouldn’t feel comfortable at. Seems weird and invasive to ask while everyone is insecure and unsure of what they’re doing—

I have heard that there are about 70 painting finalists, and 21 will be admitted from that. It all depends on how many studio spaces open up, and there are a few more some years than others.

Hey everyone, does anyone know anything about Yale’s graphic design programs from an inside perspective? I’m still thinking about some “maybe” schools too, and am interested in the idea of the preliminary year for non graphic design undergrads!

There is also an entire year of students who took time off while colleges went remote, so the whole calendar of graduates is probably a little skewed. All of the seniors who took a leave of absence last year are either back in school this year or did not return to their degree-- meaning a least a good bit of students who would be jumping right into their MFA are currently still tied up in their bachelors degree. On the flip side, there seems to be a lot of people who enrolled in an MFA program in the last year or two and left and are reapplying, so some of them probably need less help and have less questions so the forum chatter is a little more low key.

Does anyone have any last minute studio based programs on the east coast/new england that I have been sleeping on? I wish NYC or other top super expensive schools were on the table, but I think my current list is BU, VCU, Rutgers, Tyler. I am only looking for schools that prioritize critique and making to be the base of the curriculum, but it seems like a lot of schools are currently falling apart at the seams. Any other suggestions?

I definitely relate to this sentiment, especially since I will be applying to some programs again after picking the wrong school last year-- and from my communication with them about reapplying, it seems like they will not award me the same or more scholarship if I do not apply with an entirely fresh portfolio (which I ABSOLUTELY was not anticipating to do, since three months ago I thought I was locked into my future). I am in the same boat about having this hyper-aware feeling of "I am making this new body of work in a rushed state for a specific purpose and it goes against everything that I would naturally do". Feel free to message me directly and maybe we can work out our shared anxieties together. Anyway, thanks for typing out your feelings because you are not at all alone in this.

just a heads up though, the incoming first year students this year were all full instructors of record instead of teaching assistants, and there was a grievance filed to the union last year about unfair pay etc. etc.

Thanks so much for this-- I'm so glad I'm not alone and that's a REALLY good point about the "weak" one-off pieces being surprise. I wasn't planning on having to reapply since I was enrolled in an MFA program and made big plans to make big in depth pieces like you were saying, so the shift back into smaller more intimate work has been a bit of a labored directional change, but hopefully it'll work out in the end. I'm just picturing everyone else applying with big intricate installation shots from their countless solo shows, and mine are just pictures from my studio. Definitely feeling the pressure this time around.

Is anyone feeling the temptation to make work that conforms to structure of the portfolio, and refrain from work that may not read as well in the application? I have always made bodies of work with a variety of subjects/mediums within them, so my former work has a lot of different ideas going on that work well to show depth in applications. The work that I would like to pursue at the moment is a bit quieter, and involves a repetitive motif that I am afraid may be feel redundant in a slideshow format. I am concerned about how to approach this work, and can feel the approaching deadline shifting my ideas in an unnatural way. Is anyone else experiencing this kind of forceful pressure that is changing your studio practice?

Thanks so much for all of this information about Tyler Painting! I just wanted to add that Tyler Sculpture is apparently not a supportive place for students with learning disabilities (which became a big reason why I didn't accept my offer last year). A lot of my work is related to learning disabilities, and after my interview/presentation a current student who also had dyslexia ect. reached out to me to say that they were really struggling with how unsupportive of an environment it was to have a learning disability and interact with the rigid faculty and curriculum.

Thanks for the tips, but I’m specifically curious about statements tailored for applications, not general artist statements

Does anyone have any resources for successful artist statements? I've been fine tuning the same statement for months now, but have rewritten it so many times it looks like a blob of words at this point. It would be so helpful to read successful statements that other people have written to get into competitive schools, but I'm at a loss of how to find them.

A bunch of people I’m close with went there for undergrad and have very few good things to say about them. If you’re a painter/sculptor/printmaker/drawer I would consider pafa instead
-
I'm in the same boat-- I worked at The University of the Arts and took a few classes also. I didn't think it was worth mentioning, but maybe if it adds another dynamic to your portfolio it would be relevant

I'm curious if it will be more competitive this year than last with more people applying-- any thoughts?

Yikes, that’s a really good point— I was only at my program for 2 weeks so I’m not in such a sticky situation. I would imagine though that this is honestly a really common thing due to the pandemic. I’m not sure it would be viewed as political of a move as it would before the pandemic and everyone leaving their programs temporarily. Perhaps if you reach out to your professors and are really honest about needing to transfer due to the medium change, they might understand more. I’m not sure though, I would love to hear what everyone thinks about this situation.

I’m not sure what’s normal actually— the private art schools I am familiar with have had masters level studio classes, though I can see how all independent studies would be equally helpful! Independent studies at UMass were available, but incoming students were not given enough time to meet all of the faculty in order to find someone who had an opening in their schedule to sponsor your IS. Many professors were too busy to do so, which made it a bit of a scramble. Also I heard that a lot of independent studies were equally as micromanaged and had to be super preplanned instead of letting students develop and grow and change and find new interests to guide their explorations throughout the semester. Either way, I personally was not happy with that format..
