Still haven't heard back from Columbia (printmaking) after interviewing over 3 weeks ago now. At this point I'm assuming i didnt get in, but I guess there is still a chance. Still waiting on Yale's financial aid office too, has anyone heard back from them?
-
Sorry if someone else has already asked/addressed this (I haven't really kept up w this forum the past week or so), but has anyone heard back from Yale financial aid?

Speed and quantity were things I tried to stick to this time around, without sacrificing quality (so basically scaling down on the size of the work quite a bit). I re-applied as soon as I could (so they don't forget me lol) and with an almost entirely new portfolio; I think I only recycled one artwork from my previous application. when I interviewed i also presented 4 brand new artworks and 4 sketches that I made after submitting my application and before getting the interview invitation. Choosing to re-apply right away with new work definitely isn't possible for every re-applicant depending on life circumstances and the nature of their work. but I think for my case specifically, it felt necessary and was doable (with a lot of struggle), and I think it's what got me in!

I don't think it's a bad thing to ask the same people. I asked one of my previous recommenders to write a new, updated letter for me, and got into my top choice (Yale) after the second try. Some schools that use Slate as their online application system also allow you to recycle previous letters that have already been submitted to them, you can just opt to "import from previous application" or something like that (I know both Yale and Columbia have this option).

Yes of course! So techically i didnt learn from the interviewers themselves that that it's fully funded, but I did learn from them that I'm in the running for the fellowship, which they described as "a special opportunity." it also sounded like it's only for printmakers. Later that same day, I spoke to an old acquaintance of mine who recently graduated from columbia's visual art MFA program, and they told me that the fellowship is typically fully funded, and is only awarded to a single student every year. in hindsight, i could be wrong about it being fully funded if my acquaintance was misinformed or has outdated information. maybe i jumped to that conclusion too quickly in my excitement haha. especially since—at this point—i still haven't even heard back from columbia. for all i know i might not even get in. so it's really totally inconclusive as of right now
-
Nor sure! Depends on financial aid I guess. During my columbia interview I learned I was in the running for a fully funded fellowship, which would be a huge amazing offer. I also know yale tends to be extremely generous with their aid, so I guess we will see !

I interviewed with Columbia last week, so I'd imagine we hear back in the next week or so? Or at least by mid-March, I hope...

what department did u apply to? i applied for Paint/Print, maybe different departments do things differently. Or even individual interviewers—I interviewed last year as well, and last year's interviewers asked me pretty generic questions. trying to distract myself until the decisions come out, but it's pretty difficult!

Hi, i participated in last year's forum and have been a lurker this year. finally feeling ready to join the convo after having finished my first two interviews last week with Yale and Columbia. Both went pretty well, and the questions were hyper-specific to my applications (Yale went as far as quoting parts of my written statement in a couple of their questions). I surprised the Columbia interviewers by showing them new work that I've made since applying, and they were very receptive to that and seemed super excited about it, which was nice. Right now I'm still waiting to hear back from UCLA, like others. Was rejected by SAIC and Hunter, although the Hunter rejection surprised me since I previously have been accepted into their MFA program. Guess it wasn't meant to be !!

Just did my interview with Hunter earlier today and think it went really really really well! Got to speak to Chitra Ganesh, one of my heroes, so that was just so lovely and exciting. It definitely went way better than my Yale interview haha

Hi hi 2 people interviewed me, and I knew who it was gonna be ahead of time; they let me know via email. The dynamic was not super formal or anything, but definitely question/answer at first and then it got more conversational as it kept going, especially towards the end.

Interviewed with Yale this past week, and it started off just ok but ended decently, and that's when i felt i really started to connect to my interviewers, towards the end. It's my first time applying to MFA programs and this was my first interview so far, so I'm trying to not think about my slip-ups too much and focus more on what I did well, but it's difficult!! guess I'll find out the results soon enough. Regardless i'm still happy to have made it this far, and will take what i learned into my next interview, which is with Hunter in two weeks.
