  1. I'm applying to the Ed.D program in Culture, Communities and Education, and if not admitted, hope to be considered for the HDP Ed.M. Which program are you applying to TDGirl84?
  2. Hi there, I met with a professor at Berkeley and she told me that they don't have much funding available, because of budget cuts. That being said, she did say that Berkeley and UCLA are better off, in terms of funding that the other UC schools. She also said that there are only a few RA/TA positions available in the Ed school as well. I thought Penn GSE was fully funded for each year, but I could be completely wrong on that! I am also not sure about the funding breakdown for HGSE. I did find it recently, but don't remember the link.... Hope this helps a bit! What programs are you applying to? I am applying to Social and Cultural Studies at Cal, Education, Culture and Society at Penn and Culture, Communities and Education at HGSE. GOOD LUCK!
  3. Hey there, I'd be happy to look over your SOP if you like. Good luck!
  4. Hi there, I think you could submit the essay you wrote recently for the college class you just took. I would not suggest writing a brand new paper, unless you feel that you really don't have anything suitable. Also, I would try to submit something on the shorter side. Personally, I think 25 pages is too long for the writing sample. Good luck!
  5. Hey Newms, I found some samples of personal history/diversity statements through Top Law Schools forum: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=25821 Obviously, these are for Law school applications, but I found some of the themes helpful, since I am having a hard time figuring out what to write mine on now. I feel as if I included the pertinent info in my SOP already! Hope that site helps anyway!
  6. Hi, Also, I think it would be helpful to mention 2 or 3 professors in the department who you are interested in working with and why, in your paragraph about why you chose this particular program. I totally agree with Newms here too. Be positive! Avoid the negatives as much as you can, unless you feel like you want to explain low grades/GRE scores. GOOD LUCK!
  7. I was just musing about all-powerful admissions committees. After reading some application process horror stories included in Donald Asher's "Graduate School Admissions: Write your way into the grad school of your choice" book- (he includes some anecdotes about how in attempts to spruce up their applications/ stand out from the crowd, various applicants submitted poems, photo-essays, songs, a giant cookie and even a picture drawn by their little sister reading "Please let my sister in!" along with their applications- NB: these applicants were rejected!) ...so, i was just thinking it would be funny to see if and what admissions committee members receive from applicants, in attempts to win admission into their top choice schools. if anyone has any input on this, i think it'd would be quite funny to mull over, and i'm bored at work! and NO, I'm not planning on bribing any adcoms! hah! Good luck everyone on your applications this time around!
  8. Also, the first professor asked me which other schools I was applying to. Hope this helps!
  9. Hi everyone! I just wanted to add my two cents, since I've had 2 pre-application interviews so far. I'm applying to PhD and MA programs in Education. After corresponding with several professors at UCSC via email, I arranged to meet with them to talk further about the program and my "fit." I met with 2 professors last week, and thought i'd share my thoughts. I wore a nice skirt and shirt, sort of business-casual, with nice black flats. One of the professors was very difficult to talk to and really impersonal. I met him in his office on campus He was very blunt, and pretty much the first thing he asked was "Why do you want to study here?" and "Why do you want a PhD?" I was a bit intimidated, but tried my best to answer his questions without being thrown off guard. It's really important to me that the professor will be approachable, since if admitted, I'll be working with them for 5-7 years! The next professor I met with was lovely. She's British and I met her at her house, and had a cup of tea in her garden. Although she was really easy to talk to, she thought that I wasn't a good match with what the professors in the department were working on, even though she had been very positive and encouraging via email. Oh well, at least I know that I am not going to apply there now! Also, I'm speaking with a professor at UC Berkeley this week, so can add more comments on this thread afterwards. I am also flying to Philadelphia to meet with some professors at UPenn, and also traveling to Cambridge to meet with 3 Harvard professors, who have all be very encouraging and told me i'd be a good fit with the department. I'll let you know what happens!
