  1. did anyone else encounter the same problem with the stanford stegner portal? they sent out emails that decisions came out but the portals didn't update to say anything? i remember someone said on here a few days ago that they got admitted to stanford, was it the stegner one? assuming that it was, they probably sent out acceptances earlier, but i'm not sure. it'll be nice to get rid of the anxiety though, so i can just go back to sleep without refreshing my email again and again
  2. does anyone know tentatively about NC State decisions? around which time do they start notifying?
  3. i could be wrong, but i remember reading stegner lets applicants know by early/first week of april. don't know about the others though.
  4. does cornell notify acceptances by calls? their eerie silence on fiction after already having notified poetry ones two days ago is so distressing. or have they notified and i missed it?
  5. that's a good thing to have, i guess. i dont know if it's an older generation problem, but ive met a lot of established writers in my country who do go out of their way to badmouth genres and make students read 'something of substance'. and at some point, when that was the only narrative i heard, i started believing that maybe, this is what all literary fiction authors have to do or tend to at some point. and these were prize winners and scholarship holders, very accomplished in their fields. i was just generally asking about that stereotype. i'm hopeful that us young writers hopefully won't be a part of that bunch.
  6. OH. I THOUGHT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT BOOKSHELF TYPE ROMANCE NOVELS "THIRTY WAYS TO EARN LOVE" TYPE BOOKS. oh god. forgive me.
  7. hmm, could someone elaborate on exactly why we consider simple romance novels as 'trashy'? i mean, obviously, this isn't the first time i've heard this, but i was just wondering, what standards do we put in place that put romance or other genre novels in the trashy part of the spectrum and literary fiction on the other? is it the lack of complexity in the plot or characters? or the commercialism? bec i mean, making money isn't a bad thing. i've always been sort of confused on this end. isn't all literature just, literature? i've read things that make me very angry, very happy and very sad and i've disagreed with a lot of plotholes and twists and turns, but i don't know, i can't bring myself to ever say that something is bad? maybe it's just a me thing.
  8. this feels a little relieving to hear honestly. i'm sure i have no shot at cornell fiction, but at the very least, i can stop staring at my gmail inbox every twenty minutes or so.
  9. i've only applied in fiction writing since i think that's the only thing i know how to do, however, in retrospect it doesn't seem like a good choice to me. actually, the entire decision of applying to an MFA doesn't. the only reason i applied was because my professor encouraged me to go for it, but i feel like i should've thought about it more before actually doing it. not because i've suddenly realised i want to do something else and applying to an MFA was just a fleeting choice, but i feel like i'm way too inexperienced for it. i've had one rejection so far, and it doesn't seem like jhu is going to get back with a positive response (since i think they've already sent out acceptances?). to be very honest, if i sound like i'm very young and inexperienced, it's probably because i am. it's my first application round and i'm barely out of undergrad yet. however, i do feel like for international people, the entire process is definitely a bit harder (i mean i had to sit for an english test before applying that cost me like, 200 dollars, which is a lot to pay to prove i can speak english). whew, this turned into a rant.
  10. the fact that they noticed the 'straight out of undergrad' part enough to consider it a downside worth mentioning is sort of alarming. i was thinking it might be an unsaid thing, but this seems to cement how it might not be as informal. still, it does ease some nerves because strong writers might get in through somehow, and you and a couple of others above have done it already!!! i hope there's also hope for me. congratulations on your acceptances! i hope you have the best time if you choose to go!!
  11. congratulations! this is giving me hope. good luck for your program! i hope i do get in somewhere.
  12. oh! that's so cool and admirable! hope it turns out the way you want!
  13. what, in general, does it mean when you say 'life experience'? does it mean actual work in the field (i.e. publications, journal articles, prizes etc.)? or does it mean that the writing itself seems like it's more mature, as if it's coming from someone who has some years of life learning to show?
  14. hi, i'm applying for the very first time to MFA programs and i'm not from the US so i'm not very well-versed in how college application works here at all, but i tried my best. i was just wondering, is it true that MFA programs don't really take freshly graduated people (freshly graduated from their undergrad degrees)??? i've read a lot of things about this on the internet and while i haven't talked to anyone about it, i was wondering if this is actually true.
